Best Tent Camping near Weston, CO

Tent camping options near Weston, Colorado include both established campgrounds and dispersed sites across the surrounding region. Sanchez Stabilization Reservoir offers tent-only sites with picnic tables and basic facilities, while Great Sand Dunes Dispersed camping provides free primitive tent campsites with spectacular mountain views approximately 30 minutes from the sand dunes. The Campsites at Jamail Ranch also offers tent-specific accommodations, though with more limited facilities for primitive camping enthusiasts.

Most tent camping areas require self-sufficiency, as amenities are minimal throughout the region. Campers should bring all necessary water, as drinking water is unavailable at most sites. Sanchez Stabilization Reservoir provides vault toilets and cement picnic tables at approximately four lakeside camping spots. Fire regulations vary by location and season, with some areas permitting campfires in established rings while others prohibit them entirely. Access roads to many tent campsites range from well-maintained to rough dirt tracks requiring high-clearance vehicles. According to one visitor at Great Sand Dunes Dispersed, "We made it with an AWD Subaru and a 40-year-old pop-up trailer," though they noted only "capable vehicles" should attempt certain routes.

Tent campers frequently encounter varied weather conditions at these sites, with winds being common at several locations. The primitive nature of these campgrounds offers exceptional stargazing opportunities and relative solitude despite occasional crowds during peak seasons. At Great Sand Dunes Dispersed, tent sites are spread along the main road with additional secluded spots accessible via rougher terrain. Sites typically feature established fire rings and offer varying levels of privacy depending on elevation and vegetation. Many tent camping areas provide strategic access to nearby attractions, including Great Sand Dunes National Park and various hiking trails. A visitor described Sanchez Stabilization Reservoir as having "beautiful scenery" despite being "very windy at times" and noted some road noise from passing trucks that might affect tent campers more than those in enclosed vehicles.

    BLM Mt. Blanca Rd. Dispersed

    San Luis Valley View

Not far from Great Sand Dunes national Park & Zapata Falls, this free dispersed campsite, as well as others along unpaved Mount Blanca Road, provide wonderful views. One side are mountains, and the other San Luis Valley. This particular dispersed site is just off the rocky road as one starts to climb the slope toward the mountains. Mount Blanca Road starts out very easy with no obstacles & washouts, but becomes bumpy and, at some places, technical, as one drives up the slope. The road has washouts and large rocks on it. The site itself was not level, but we managed okay with our campervan. The site is very close to the road; other campers, overlanders & hikers greeting you as they pass by. This site, as well as others along the road, are wide open. There were a few clumps of junipers where we were able to hide our toilet setup. The site was a short pull-thru with a rock fire ring and a small area to set up a tent. Separation between dispersed sites is really good, giving one some privacy. The site was clean. There are no amenities: no water, no electric, no shelter, no toilets. Pack it in, pack it out. We did have reasonable AT&T & T-Mobile service. It was windy & cool at night. Except for an occasional ATV passing by, it was quiet. Enjoy our stay; would not hesitate to camp here again.

Eagle Nest Lake State Park Campground

    Eagle Nest State park campground

Beautiful, clean area with about 15 campsites. There is a place to get water and restrooms in the park. Each campsite has plenty of space between sites, but has no electric or water hookups and there is no dump station. Very nice views of the lake and great walking trails with lots of flora and fauna.

Blue Lake Campground - Temporarily Closed

    High Elevation Forest Camp

We camped here two nights in July 2019. The site is about two hours west of Trinidad Colorado in the Spanish Peaks Area along scenic highway 12. The road leading to the site is about 5 miles of step gravel and dirt road with multiple switchbacks. The road is wide enough for vans and smaller campers but not the larger 5th wheels or RVs. You follow road up the mountain along the stream to blue lake a small mountain lake that is popular for trout fishing The campground is just north of the lake. The have a couple of loops with about 10 sites in each loop. Most of the sites are located along a beautiful wooded mountain stream. The high elevation of 10,000 keeps the temps down in the summer and the night sky is spectacular. The camp was full during our stay and reservations are highly recommended. A few campers were moving around each night for the odd opening. They have fire wood, water, and nice clean pit toilets. Our site number 8 was great and positioned on the trail to the lake and along the stream. You can see the mountain tops from sites 6 and 7 but they are along the road. This is a popular area for ATVs. So you may have company on the trails or around the site. The sites had a nice mix of tents, vans, and campers. We plan to come back in the fall. This is a keeper. Each site had a picnic table, fire ring and ample parking for two cars or one van. You do have some privacy between the sites. The camps along the river including 8, 9, and 10 are outstanding.

Yucca Campground — Lathrop State Park

Too much $$ for too little

Colorado State Parks are expensive. We had a VERY basic site with communal water & vault toilets for $28 + $9 day fee. Nice picnic tables & fire rings though. Way too close to the highway — noisy! Plus helicopter overhead made sleep difficult.

Lake Alice Campground — Sugarite Canyon State Park

    It was wonderful

My boyfriend and I took a 13 state journey this summer over the course of 3 weeks and this was one of my favorite campsites we stayed at. The site itself was quaint and very nice to tent camp in. The tent sites had raised platforms to put your tent on and the ground underneath was softer, so it wasn’t that uncomfortable to sleep on👍🏻10/10 would go back🏕 they had bear boxes to keep all your food and odorants in over night. They have wood for sale for fires, there’s showers up the road and bathrooms within walking distance of every site. The camp hosts were very kind and helpful.

    Lake 13-Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge

    Empty Lake but FREE.

FREE campground! Large relatively flat grass lot with garbage cans and picnic tables. Pit toilets and recycling at  the entrance. The lake was completely dry but has fishing and trolling motor boats only allowed when there is water. Very quiet place to stay the night. There was only one other camper that showed up when we stayed here. Lots of wildlife and pets allowed on leash.

    Lake 13-Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge

    Fantastic views

We stayed here 1 night on our trip back to Texas from Colorado.

Plenty of room for several rvs/vans  and tent campers.  Picnic tables and trash bins available.  No shade, no potable water, no electric, no sewer.  True boondocking site.  There are pit toilets at the entrance to the camping zone.   Roads are gravel and well maintained.

Great site for a touch-n-go overnight stay while traveling.

    BLM Mt. Blanca Rd. Dispersed

    Happy we ended up here

We ended up here by mistake, thinking we were at the Sacred White shell BLM. Glad we did though. Great views of The Twin Peaks and Blanca Peak. Lots of flat open space down low. We stopped as the road steepened and set up in a big spot that was close to the road. No complaints considering we got here an hour before dark. Views for miles here!

What to do

Hiking access: Great Sand Dunes Dispersed camping provides convenient entry points for nearby trails. "Nearness to Great Sand Dunes was a huge plus. Alamosa nearby for supplies & food," mentions camper alicianlv, who appreciated the strategic location.

Fishing opportunities: Blackjack Tent Area in nearby Cimarron Canyon State Park offers direct river access. "We stayed at camp site #27, which was the biggest and spacious site... Caught plenty of trout and overall had a great time," notes Josie H. Site #30 was highlighted as "probably the other best one as it was in the back and last camp site and right next to the water."

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings and evenings present the best wildlife spotting chances. At Great Sand Dunes Dispersed, campers report seeing "coyotes in the distance" and various desert species. Vanessa C. documented seeing "mountain blue birds, tiger beetles, circus beetles, hover flies, common flies, plateau fence lizards, snake holes, pocket mice, deer droppings" during her stay.

What campers like

Night sky views: The limited light pollution creates stunning stargazing conditions. Hummingbird Ranch received praise specifically for its dark skies: "Hummingbird Ranch was the most beautiful site we stayed at during a 5,500 mile cross country adventure! Awesome views, beautiful sky, and complete freedom," shares Barbara F.

Mountain scenery: The panoramic views rank high among camper priorities. John M. noted about Great Sand Dunes Dispersed, "Enjoyed an evening here. Not much shade, you will be exposed to the sun and any rain."

What you should know

Vehicle considerations: Many access roads require appropriate vehicles. At Cabresto Lake Campground, "A vehicle with off-road capabilities is recommended if you want to reach this campground. While not impossible with a regular sedan, it does take navigating up some unpaved switchbacks," advises David L.

Weather preparedness: Strong winds are common throughout the region. DL M. at Sanchez Stabilization Reservoir notes: "Quiet windy. The van is rocking around. Hold onto your car doors when you open them."

Arrival timing: Popular sites fill quickly, especially on weekends. "There's plenty of spots off the main road, but seems like you need to get there early. We showed up around 6 pm," shares Ashley W. about Great Sand Dunes Dispersed camping.

There are several dispersed campsites," notes Amanda S., adding that "All campsites seems you would be able to get to with a RV or a 2 wheel car."

Temperature management: Pack layers for children as temperature swings can be extreme. "The temperature almost went down to freezing at night in early June, so be prepared with layers for both hot and cold desert conditions," warns one camper about the Great Sand Dunes area.

Leveling challenges: Finding flat spots for trailers can be difficult in many areas.
