This free National Wildlife Refuge campground sits beside Lake 13, accessed via approximately three miles of gravel road that requires attention after rain. The camping area consists of an open grass field with no designated sites, allowing RVs up to 43 feet and tent campers to position themselves throughout the space.
Campers find pit toilets at the entrance along with picnic tables and trash service scattered across the grounds. The site operates on a first-come basis with no reservations required. Cell service reaches the area reliably for most carriers. Sheridan L. notes that "with spring coming in, the birds were a great natural alarm," while the absence of shade means full sun exposure during daylight hours.
The lake itself fluctuates seasonally, sometimes appearing completely dry while other times supporting fishing and trolling motor boats. Wildlife sightings include various bird species and deer, particularly active during dawn and dusk hours. Wind can be significant, with some campers experiencing gusts exceeding 60 mph during weather advisories. The open terrain offers unobstructed night sky viewing when conditions allow.
Road conditions become problematic during wet weather, with soft ground potentially trapping heavier vehicles. Most campers use this as an overnight stop while traveling, though the space accommodates longer stays. The campground maintains a quiet atmosphere after 10 PM according to multiple visitor accounts. Those needing additional services can find Maxwell RV Park about four miles southeast, while regional travelers often explore places to camp near Cimarron for more developed options.
This spot works well for self-sufficient campers comfortable with basic facilities and variable weather conditions.
