    Monument Lake Resort

Beautiful start in south central Colorado

A large campground at the foot of the southern San Isabel mountain range. When you first drive in there are secluded tent spots, then small cabins. There are many spots all around the lake, with large tenter sites on the opposite bank of the lake. We set up amongst the trees in a relatively open spot but there weren’t many campers there so it was no problem. Had a view of the lake and a vault toilet nearby (it was pretty disgusting). Clean showers/toilets on other side of lake. No picnic table on site, but it did have a box grill and a fire pit — burn ban was in effect though. A little stream nearby. Camp store, restaurant, boat rental on site. In all we were thankful for a spot in the summer with no reservations.

Yucca Campground — Lathrop State Park

Too much $$ for too little

Colorado State Parks are expensive. We had a VERY basic site with communal water & vault toilets for $28 + $9 day fee. Nice picnic tables & fire rings though. Way too close to the highway — noisy! Plus helicopter overhead made sleep difficult.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

    Views for Miles

We stayed here the first week o f November 2020. Not all sites were open and the park was not crowded at all. The bathrooms were open and the weather was beautiful. The sites are all pull through and private. We had lots of space behind us to stretch out in. A picnic table was also placed in a space where shade would be provided on a concrete slab. Electric and water at the site and a dump station at the exit.

4k River Ranch is the best campground in Red River. They've got RV sites, apartments, cabins and a beautiful penthouse in the center of town overlooking the town and mountain. The Red River runs through the park, so you can fish in it or in the stocked private pond. The have 50amp & 30amp sites. Pull-thrus, back-ins & buddy sites. WiFi is good for checking emails and browsing websites. Very nice bathrooms with showers plus a laundry room. The staff is fantastic and they've got a really nice new office/store. Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

Lathrop State Park has a little of everything

We have visited this park several times, in the summer, spring and fall. The campground provides a nice visitors center, two small lakes (one non-wake), a sand beach, paved and unpaved bike trails, fishing, a kids fishing pond, trails, and electric or no-hook-up camping. The campground is divided into three loops with each loop containing flush toilets and shower facilities. A tent-only campground is situated closer to the highway, while the three loops are far from the road and provide ample star-gazing experiences. Favorite spots include 102 (has a great view of the Spanish Peaks), and site 84 (private pull-through with junipers and other short trees to block the road/other campers). I have attended several ranger programs here and hiked on all trails. Playing on the beach and picnicking is enhanced by the water stations to wash off the sand, benches, picnic tables, and shade trees. Kayaking on the no-wake lake is peaceful and fishing is abundant. Bike riding is simple and mostly flat. A fully paved trail circles the lake and is accessible by the campgrounds. A public, 9-hole golf course sits directly next to the park. The course is inexpensive and fun for an afternoon or morning. If you've exhausted all your options at the park itself, head one hour away to the Great Sand Dunes National Park to "surf" on the dunes and learn about this beautiful area. This park truly has a little of everything and while it is one of the oldest state parks in Colorado, it is well-maintained and enjoyable year-round.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

    Great State Park

We stayed on Piñon for one night this fall. This area has gravel rods and less facilities than the Yucca campground. However, you have large pull in space and more rustic camping. This camp is closer to the entrance and lake for fishing and boating. The sites are basic with electrical and water. The restrooms are basic and no showers. The camp is in a good location to local towns and the highway. This is definitely worth a try.

Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

    Great State Park

We stayed here for two nights this October. This is an expansive state park with hundreds of sites and awesome facilities. The views to the west looking at the Spanish peaks are awesome. They have hot showers and clean restrooms as well as RV dump station. The sites have electrical hookups and fresh water with hose hookup is available in the campground. The lake is popular for fishing and boating. They have a boat inspection station as the entrance for ballast water. The park is near the highway and close to the Spanish Peaks area and the popular of La Veda, CO.

    4K River Ranch

Best RV Park in Red River

This is the best rv park in Red River. The river runs right through the park. There is a trout pond, playground, pavilion with live music on most Fridays during the summer and they also have condos and cabins. The staff is so helpful and friendly. If you want to get out of the heat of the summer this is the place to be. Red River is 8,750’ above sea level in the mountains. Daytime temp is in the 70°s and nights are in the 50°s all summer long.

Guide to Weston

Cabin camping near Weston, Colorado positions visitors in an area with elevations ranging from 6,500 to 8,000 feet, creating significant temperature variations between day and night in all seasons. Most cabin accommodations in this region sit along Highway 12, the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway, which connects the small communities throughout Las Animas County. Visitors should prepare for 30-40°F temperature drops after sunset, even during summer months.

What to do

Fishing at stocked waters: Monument Lake Resort offers both lake fishing and nearby stream access where visitors report consistent success. "Fishing is allowed from shore, dock, boat or ice fishing during the winter months. Parking is easily accessible and free," notes Monte P. about Monument Lake Resort.

Hiking nearby trails: Several trails connect to cabin sites, providing day hiking opportunities without driving. At Lathrop State Park, "Fantastic park. One of our absolute favorites. Excellent trails and a ridge to climb, as well as stellar views of the Spanish peaks. Excellent scenic drives are not far away," according to Jeff N. about Piñon Campground.

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings and evenings provide opportunities to see deer, elk and various bird species. "Saw lots of wildlife on my bike ride. No mountain bike trails but I found some pretty scenic riding," mentions a visitor at Monument Lake Resort.

What campers like

Privacy between cabin sites: Many cabin locations offer natural spacing between accommodations. At Circle the Wagons RV Park, "We stayed here for one night, and the property exceeded our expectations. The facilities were exceptionally clean — especially the bathrooms and showers, which were spotless... We stayed at Site 5, which was probably the largest site we visited all week."

Seasonal flexibility: While some cabin options close during winter, others remain open year-round. "This KOA felt a little aged, but it was clean, quiet, and felt safe," notes Stephen K. about Raton KOA, adding that despite arriving after a rainstorm to a muddy site, they found the campground to be a reliable overnight option.

Proximity to small towns: Cabins provide access to nearby communities for supplies. "The surroundings were beautiful, with potted plants throughout the property. We spotted plenty of deer and horses nearby (though none entered the campground itself). There's also a game room and a fun book exchange for guests," reports a Circle the Wagons visitor.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly throughout the area. "We didn't have any cell service. The shower was lukewarm," reports Cindy S. at 4K River Ranch, despite giving the location's views a "5 out of 5" rating.

Temperature variations: Night temperatures drop dramatically, requiring heating even in summer. At Lathrop State Park, one visitor notes, "Very windy at times and also a-little road noise from the near motorcade," while another mentions the "excellent views of Spanish peaks."

Reservation requirements: Most cabins require advance booking, particularly during summer weekends. "Sites fill up quickly. Busy on weekends. We prefer Sun-Thur to miss the crowds," advises an experienced Monument Lake visitor.

Water access restrictions: Water availability varies by site and season. "The sites are basic with electrical and water. The restrooms are basic and no showers," shares a visitor about primitive cabin options at Lathrop State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some cabin locations include play areas for children. "The grounds included cabins, trailer sites, and tent sites, all of which were clean and well cared for," notes a visitor at Circle the Wagons, mentioning the well-maintained facilities that accommodate families.

Educational opportunities: Several sites offer nature programs during summer months. At Lathrop State Park, "Lake for fishing, jetskiing, swimming. Hogback Trail and other trails. Golf course for campers (prob for fee; looked quite nice!)" according to one visitor's observations of the family-friendly amenities.

Supply runs: Bring essential food supplies as local markets have limited stock and restricted hours. "Close to a small convenience store and cafe so everything you need is near," mentions Bryan P. regarding Monument Lake Resort's local options, though selection remains basic.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: RV sites with cabins often require leveling equipment. "We had a nice spot on the east side of the park. As someone also mentioned the north west corner of the park is directly across from a horse stable yard and your nose will know that," warns a visitor at Circle the Wagons about site selection considerations.

Power limitations: Many cabin sites offer only 20-30 amp service. "Loved Lathrop State Park, CO. Great sites and nice walk/bike path," notes Michael T., though other visitors mention the limited hookup options at certain sites.

GPS accuracy: Navigation systems often provide incorrect directions to cabin sites in this area. "GPS won't get you here because 2nd Street is bisected by a creek with no bridge. I had to back my trailer a couple of blocks... pay attention," warns one visitor about access challenges.
