Primo area if it’s not busy

I’ve stayed at both the CG and along the road in the dozens of available (if your lucky and early) dispersed sites.

Prime area to have your base to hike to Ice Lakes (closed still due to fire) or off-roading around the San Juan’s.

It’s a really busy area but if you can grab one of the better…

Free Dispersed Camping with Toilet

Came across this in June 2020 on a late Friday night about 10pm and saw a ton of people camping on top of each other so we left and camped elsewhere. FF a year (Father's Day weekend), we stopped by to check capacity on a Saturday night at 6pm and found the opposite with only 4 of 6 tent sites taken…

  • Priest Lake view from parking lot. Gorgeous!
  • Amazing night sky over our tent.
  • Empty tent-only site down at the bottom of the rocky road.

Life by the river

Great camping area along the San Juan with plenty of shade and privacy. Watched a fishermen catch plenty of trout with a fly rod. Chilled in chairs at rivers edge, crystal clear water, stream about 10 yards across. Tables and camping areas in great condition. Area free of trash. FCFS. About…

Cool, close to Mesa Verde

Got a reservation for 3 weeknights just a day in advance. It’s only 12 miles from Mesa Verde and it’s cool and shady. Spacious, level ish sites with gravel parking/picnic areas, big common areas and horseshoe pits, games to borrow at the gatehouse. Vault toilets are clean. If you go down to the…

Tent only site

We happened to love our site! The reservation map on Recreation.gov was actually a pretty accurate representation of how each site was spaced from the other. Hosts were perfectly helpful and friendly. No complaints whatsoever!

Fun and chill

We drove in, early afternoon and were surprised to find an available spot. The camp hosts recommended B4 cause it was a little secluded and had a level parking spot. Bathrooms were clean and convenient, mountain bikers were going by every couple of minutes.

Magical

Probably the best campsite I’ve been at. Views are surreal. The road up took about 20 minutes in my Tacoma (not 4x4 and a bitch of an engine but I did totally fine). I got there around 4pm on a Wednesday and there was still quite a few sites to choose from.

Would stay the full 7 days

Beautiful site! Rough road coming up would recommend not trying it without a 4wheel drive vehicle. Awesome easy trips leading to the second lake. Had a bit of rain and small but never lasted long.

Better than I expected

I didn’t expect much from Mesa verde. Much bigger than I thought for sure. It was busy but pretty nice. Decent campground. Nothing mind blowing.

Underwhelming.

This has been on my bucket list for decades. Having traveled Hwy 550 so many times over the years I would always be overwhelmed by the setting which is still OVERWHELMING.

This was the last of 3-2 night stays in search of the perfect paddling spot. I booked it back in March 2021 for June of the…

JUNE 2021… PRAY FOR RAIN! PLEASE WE BEG YOU…

This was the first stop of 3 - 2 night stays on this search to find great camping with easy access to water and preferably within a days drive of my house. I recreational kayak so access to water is at the top of my list of must haves if paddling is on the list of must do’s. This was a survey…

Great RV, cabins and campsites

We stopped here on the way to the Grand Canyon and were very pleased. Of note, Waze and google maps do not go to the correct location based on address. They both take you to a private residence. Apple Maps did get us there correctly. The resort is well maintained with plenty of things to do.…
