Cottonwood Campground — Joshua Tree National Park

    Very nice but small sites

I really liked this campground. It’s one of the campground inside Joshua Tree NP and reservable through Recreation.gov. The sites are very private but they are small. Both the pull through and back in sites are small so this is definitely not for big rigs. We had A19 which is a pull through on the right side of the road and we had to go into the gravel part of the site so we would be in enough to open our driver side slide out. And we ended up pretty slanted as a result, but it fit. There are flush toilets that are very clean. This side of the park is very nice but most of the action is north of here and so we’re an hour drive to a lot of the hikes we want to do. No cell service at all.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

    Lovely TT RV Resort!!!

The is a beautiful Thousand Trails RV Resort in Palm Springs, California! The park is large, very spacious and so clean! The gorgeous Palm trees are a little bit of a parking hazard, but they were here before we were! 😊 And besides, they are so beautiful to look at every day. The park feels like a day on beach with white sand to park on in most spaces, towering Palm trees, and brightly colored tropical flowers. What a treat in the winter! We are here in November and December and daytime high’s are in the low 80’s. The park is split in half with one side 30 amp FHU and the other half 50 amp FHU. For TT members, there is not an additional charge for 50 amp. Quite a deal! There is plenty of room to get out and walk in this park, along with a nice dog park, playground, billiards room, swimming pool and spa, horseshoes, 8 pickle ball courts, many laundry rooms and restrooms, and community recreation room. The surrounding mountains ranges are pretty amazing, too. This park is close to it all in the Palm Springs area and everything is within a short drive. Joshua Tree National Park and the Salton Sea is just over a half hour away. The Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV Resort is perfect and we will definitely be visiting again!

    Shadow Hills RV Resort

    Urban Glamping during Covid

Shadow Hills RV Resort is a stellar urban RV resort with all the amenities. Full hookups, daily trash pickups at each site, cable tv, large level pads with privacy hedge, small dog parks scattered throughout, gated security, nice restrooms w/ showers (free). We were visiting family who were just a short bike ride away. Can be extremely windy here. Desert X environmental art installations are nearby.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

    Concrete Condo Camping

A well managed, well-kept park. Plenty of 50-amp sites, which usually means BIG rigs, are all back-in. The mature date palms and tight sites makes parking and manuevering diffecult for big rigs. Very lively community; lots of people out, kid playing. Proximity to Interstate 10 and railroad tracks makes it a bit noisy. But, it's NOT too bad. Plenty of TV stations along with 5G cell service. It's not in the rules so, I believe I'm allowed to wash my rig.

    Pineknot

Pineknot Campground, Big Bear Lake, Ca

A bit challenging to locate via Google Maps... Just go up (south) Summit Blvd, when you get to the parking lot of the ski resort, veer towards the left, and just past a concrete wall, you'll see the little Pineknot Campground sign attached to an aluminium pole. The campground is very cozy, countless tall pine trees, clean bathrooms, clean sites, water from taps, no hookups, and not for big rigs. The hosts are friendly, but strict! No generators from 8 pm to 8 am, a $3000 fine if your campfire is left unattended, and no rowdy obnoxious behavior is tolerated! We appreciated the rules, and thoroughly enjoyed our peaceful, quiet, deep in the woods getaway!!

    Catalina Spa and RV Resort

Nice place, good value for money

Great for long term RV camping with hookups. They have nice hot springs pools, decent cell signal, and reasonable prices for full hookups. Camp sites are on the small side so neighbors are close, but at least they put plants in between to give you a little privacy.

Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground

    Quiet, private and unique

A great spot away from the main Joshua Tree strip. We visited for one night during the waning height of COVID and staff was taking all the necessary precautions. There were some restrooms and dish cleaning station available, though we didn’t use them. Spaces were clean and tidy and, although close together, were separated by beautiful bushes that kept it feeling private. Lots of birds around and great views of the desert and mountains. Fire ants were everywhere, so wear shoes. Most of the spots don’t have individual sewer connection but access to shared dump station. Everything was in great condition. The art installations and theatre looked so cool, but were closed temporarily. The lake was super cool and teeming with wildlife. Very reasonably priced for 50 amp & water hookup per night. Very easy access with 25’ trailer. We will definitely return.

    Palm Springs-Joshua Tree KOA

    Value for the area

Near and clean campground with clean restrooms requiring a key code to enter. Two laundry rooms. One large pool and three spas (hot tubs to folks not from So Cal) all heated with naturally heated mineral water. Secure. Park staff drive around at night to keep an eye on things. Most camps are close to the neighbors but most folks are quiet. Pay extra foe larger or premium campsites. Play area for the kids by the office. Put-put golf. Not much shade but many hedges. Gravel parking. Separate are for tents, communal sinks. Few trees around. Each camp has a sturdy picnic table. Propane fires only. And probably the same for BBQs. Great AT&T 5G cellular. Wi-Fi is weak, but it’s free.RV spot had fill hookups (water, 30 or 50 amp power, sewer, but no cable TV.

Well run and friendly, responsive staff. Understand that Desert Hot Springs is sometimes WINDY!! And that can mean dust storms, but that goes for the entire Cochella Valley. Not close to anything out here. A convenience store about 1/3 mile away. You won’t be running for coffee here. The the management sometimes hosts events and a weekend breakfast can be purchased.

All rigs are in good repair and I’ve seen nothing sketchy here at all. Been here 3 weeks with 3 more to go.

Bottom line: I would definitely stay here again, but it is a drive to get into DHS or Palm Springs. And it is windy/dusty.

    Thousand Trails Palm Springs

Close to outside activities and clean facilities

We arrived on Thursday and there were plenty of spaces open to pick from on the 50 Amp or 30 Amp side. The 30 Amp side is pull through so we decided to set up at site 61 further away from the Highway because it is a bit noisy from road noise. We didn't see any homeless people or outsiders although we did hear that the rangers are on the lookout due to theft and bikes being targeted recently. There are motion activated lights around some of the perimeter and we didn't encounter any of this during our stay even on our nightly bike rides. It was very windy and we had to leave one day early because we didn't want to travel back in a high wind advisory. The rates are expensive if you are staying nightly, but I would recommend it if you have a TT membership. Do yourself a favor and show up with a shovel or rake or contact the ranger to clean up your campsite. We didn't realize it until too late and had so many hard thorns from the weeds in the grass around the campsites, they stick to everything and follow you into your RV (they hurt) and they will give you flat tires on your bikes. One more weird rule that isn't on their regulations or policies page, a ranger drove up to my site and told me I had to take my flag down because only California or USA flags are allowed (I had a Rams flag up during the Rams game) which was weird because on our bike rides I saw flags that weren't a US flag or California flag flying.

Guide to Pioneertown

Recreational vehicle facilities near Pioneertown, California range in elevation from 2,000 to 4,000 feet, creating temperature variations between parks in the high desert compared to those in lower valley areas. During winter months, overnight temperatures in Joshua Tree area RV parks can drop below freezing, while summer daytime temperatures regularly exceed 100°F. Strong winds are common throughout the region, particularly from late fall through spring.

What to do

Stargazing opportunities: Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground offers exceptional night sky viewing due to minimal light pollution. "This is the most beautiful place to watch sunrise and sunset and stars. So peaceful," notes camper Robbin C. The open desert setting provides unobstructed views of celestial events.

Bird watching at the lake: Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground features a small lake attracting various bird species. "There is a small lake with lots of birds that my daughter loved," shares Jennifer O. The park also contains "funky art/sculptures around the property" according to Rich J.

Hiking nearby mountain trails: Keller Peak Yellow Post Campsites provides access to multiple hiking paths. "The Exploration trail weaves around them up to the peak and makes a great hike and there are tons of climbing spots," explains Kristil C. The Children's Forest and fire lookout at the summit offer educational displays.

Water recreation options: Holloway's Marina & RV Park provides direct lake access with boat rentals. "We rented a boat on Saturday and was great just to walk out on the dock with the kids. 4 hr rental was just enough," reports Kevin B. The marina also offers cruises on their Pirate Ship.

What campers like

Mineral hot springs: Catalina Spa and RV Resort features natural hot spring pools. "Two hot spring-fed pools and hot tubs (one of which is massive and SO luxe), we didn't want to leave. Like, ever. The spring leaves your skin oh so soft and rejuvenated," writes Jordan W. The pools maintain approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit naturally.

Community activities: Thousand Trails Palm Springs organizes regular social events for campers. "We asked if they had recycling and they said to bag up our recycling and leave it out with the trash," notes Laura M. The park also hosts seasonal celebrations: "We were there the weekend before Easter and they did an Easter Egg hunt so that was super fun."

Privacy between sites: Despite tight spacing in some areas, many parks offer landscaping to create separation. At Catalina Spa and RV Resort, "Lower section is blocked by trees and bushes which block you from your neighbors," according to JMark H. The landscaping helps mitigate the frequent high winds common to the area.

Proximity to Joshua Tree National Park: Joshua Tree RV & Campground provides convenient access to the park's western entrance. "Located close to the town of Joshua Tree so you can still grab a bite to eat if you're not up to cooking. Easy access to the west entry gate but this gate tends to get busy on holiday weekends," advises Karen M.

What you should know

Wind conditions: The Palm Springs area frequently experiences high winds that can affect camping equipment. At Catalina Spa and RV Resort, a camper notes "It can be windy at times, so you need to mind your awnings." Thousand Trails Palm Springs visitor reported: "It was very windy and we had to bring in our awning."

Site limitations: Emerald Desert RV Resort sites vary in quality and level. "We unfortunately got one that was an end spot so it angled down to one side quite a bit. It was difficult for us to get level and costs us our 'patio' area since there wasn't enough room for our rug," explains Kelsey B.

Noise considerations: Several RV parks experience noise from nearby highways and railways. At Thousand Trails Palm Springs, "The only downside is the noise from the freeway, train and airport," notes Bryan S. Emerald Desert visitor Laura M. explains: "It's close to the freeway and the road noise is loud and never stops."

Seasonal variations: Most parks operate year-round but with fluctuating occupancy. At Keller Peak, "They fill up fast may-sept," warns Kristil C. Summer heat impacts comfort, while winter brings occasional freezing temperatures and even snow at higher elevations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Few RV parks offer dedicated playgrounds, but alternatives exist. Joshua Tree RV & Campground is "right next to a park where the kids can skate, play and you can take your doggos!" according to Kindra M. This provides recreational space beyond the confines of the campground.

Pool temperature considerations: Palm Springs Oasis RV Resort maintains heated pools with specific usage rules. "Two great pools and a hot tub! There's a little dog run in the back corner behind the bathrooms too," reports Derek & Alex W. Some parks separate adult and family pools.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Desert wildlife often appears early morning or evening. At Joshua Tree Lake RV & Campground, "There's a nice little pond with lots of birds that my daughter loved. There is also a lot of funky art/sculptures around the property," notes Rich J., making it engaging for younger visitors.

Weather preparation: Temperature fluctuations require appropriate clothing and gear. "We had two perfect days, but the final full day was filled with wind, as expected in this part of the desert. No worries, though—explore the town and escape the wind," advises Jason M. from Joshua Tree Lake RV.

Tips from RVers

Maneuvering challenges: Palm trees and tight spacing create navigation difficulties at some parks. At Thousand Trails Palm Springs, "Parking big rig between the palm trees can be a challenge," warns Rose G. Arriving during daylight hours helps with site selection and positioning.

Hookup configurations: Sewer connections vary significantly between parks. At Holloway's Marina, "It was difficult to use the dump hookups as they're elevated about a foot off the ground so I had to lift the hose off my support snake many times," explains Mike R. Bringing additional hose lengths helps accommodate unusual setups.

Water refill access: Water quality varies throughout the region. Joshua Tree Lake RV provides reliable drinking water connections but lacks individual sewer hookups at most sites. "Spaces are nice and wide some have full hookups others are just electric & water," notes John M. from Joshua Tree Lake.

Security considerations: Several parks implement safety measures to address nearby urban challenges. At Thousand Trails Palm Springs, "There are motion activated lights around some of the perimeter," explains Gustavo C. Rangers patrol regularly at most established facilities.
