Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Imperial, CA

Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort and Desert Trails RV Park both allow pets in their designated camping areas near Imperial. These established campgrounds offer full hookup sites with electricity, water, and sewer connections for RVs, while Rio Bend also provides pet-friendly cabin accommodations. Dogs must remain leashed in common areas, and campers are responsible for proper waste disposal. Area is known for having a lot of flies during certain seasons, particularly near Finney Lake Camp where the natural setting attracts insects. Both resorts feature amenities including swimming pools, golf facilities, and clean restrooms with showers, creating comfortable environments for campers and their pets.

Holtville Hot Springs Dispersed Site offers a more primitive camping experience with pets, located approximately 7 miles from the Holtville Taco Shop and Del Sol market where campers can purchase supplies. The dispersed camping area sits just past power lines behind the actual hot springs, providing free overnight options with minimal facilities. While vault toilets are available across the street at the hot springs, along with trash receptacles, campers should be prepared for potentially windy conditions that blow sand throughout the area. Slab City presents another alternative for pet owners seeking an unconventional camping experience, though visitors should exercise caution as the environment resembles a combination of an art installation and permanent residences with varying levels of hospitality toward visitors with pets.

Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort

    Convenient and clean, nice park

We only stayed one night in a pull through but enjoyed the facilities. Park is very clean and has a good restaurant. They do have a lot of mobile homes but most are newer and well kept. Some RV’s look abandoned which is a shame. Nice dog park area with grass, could use water for the pups. Laundry and bathrooms were very clean. Pool area and restaurant, bar area is nice. We had dinner, wing’s were great burger was good but not great. Service was very good. Pull through site was narrow but had all we needed for one night. Looks like the workout facility is nice.

    Burnt Rancheria Campground

    Perfect Local Mountain Getaway!

This campground is a great little hidden gem of a getaway tucked into the Laguna mountains just 50 or so miles from San Diego. At alt 6000 feet in mountain forests, you feel like you are far away from it all. The camp sites are generously spaced adding to the seclusion. It is a family campground, so just know the weekends are going to be full of kids and pets, but weekday camping will present the peace of wind and birds. Bathrooms are clean and water is available everywhere. Not many spaces for big rigs, but lots if you’re in the 20’ range. One whole section is fir first-come, first-serve.

Access to the PCT for a stretch of very easy hiking right out of the campground. A cafe at the entrance and a general store up the road a couple of miles.

Advise stopping at a local grocery for firewood, tho. Is expensive ($8/bundle) at the campground and it’s not even local. They have it shipped in.

Lastly the price here is not $25/ nite as listed. At yhe time of this writing (4/2022) it is $29/nite

    Agua Caliente County Park Campground

Large campground with lots of amenities

Lots going on here but felt peaceful midweek in Jan. 3 spring-fed pools, hot showers quarter operated, clean flush toilet bathrooms, water, hiking trails and ample roads to walk the dog on. Mountain lion country - be alert. Friendly rangers. Clean facilities and well-kept grounds. Horseshoe pits and large group picnic areas. Cute cabins for rent - no pets allowed in those. Will definitely visit again. Many of the tent sites are close together - if the campground was full you’d have little privacy but it’s a large place and there were hardly any tent campers when I was there, though more RVs and vans in the hookup section. Tent site 106 is very private. I liked 109 it was in a kind of bird thicket with privacy from the road etc.

    El Centro NAF Campground

    Military Campground

This campground is located on a military facility. You must have base access/privileges in order to utilize this campground.

The sites near the gym are back in only with full hookups on an asphalt lot. There is a small strip of grass behind each site.

Pets are allowed. Leash rules are established.

Great location for the annual air show in March. This campground is popular with “snowbirds”. Winter months stay pretty busy, while excessive heat in the summer keeps it pretty empty.

The base has a large pool with water slides, gym, bowling alley, exchange/commissary, and movie theater.

BOULEVARD / CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST KOA HOLIDAY

    Super nice owners, interesting area

This new koa is under new management and they are really trying to make it a memorable experience for you and your kids. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but it’s a beautiful part of San Diego county.

Amenities include a mini petting Zoo and things like a hayride in warmer weather. The facility is gated which felt like a great thing I didn’t know I needed. Facility is at 4000 feet.

    Burnt Rancheria Campground

    Super fun. Super clean. Covid-conscious.

It was my first time at Burnt Rancheria, but not the last. I was impressed with the cleanliness, and the spacious and well-spaced spots. It was super kid friendly and for pets as well, but never too loud. The hikes are gorgeous and easy for small ones to manage. I would highly recommend this campground ⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️⛺️

    Agua Caliente County Park Campground

One of the Best Campground in Southern California

2 outdoor pools and an indoor adult spa (102 degrees), RV sites with Power, Water and Sewer as well as tent sites. Flush toilets and hot/cold showers. This place is well maintained and the cleanest campground I have ever stayed at. Shuffleboard and Horseshoes courts, lots of hiking trails and things to see. The campground / pools are all fed from natural mineral springs. Pets are allowed within the campground and all sites have picnic table and fire-ring. Small store at the park entrance is great for the simply things you may have forgotten. They even have cabins available but they book up pretty fast. Rangers are all very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed my stay, I will be back.

    Mojos Slab Camp

Layed back with nice people and friendly pets.

Stopped in total last minute and Mojo was friendly and accommodating! I loved the vibe and although it is free to stay out in the slabs it was totally worth it to pull in here in the dark and have a place to stay. My only regret was that it was a quick stop-over and I couldn't stay longer.

If you are looking for interesting places, colorful people and friendly free roaming pets, then this is the place. I hope to stop here again in the future and spend more time with Mojo and the crew.

    Glamis Flats

    ohv camping

go with someone familiar with the area, as heading off into the dunes can be dangerous: you can get lost super easy!.. on a holiday weekend this isnt a concern cuz it’s ridiculously packed and loud.

rv’s are parallel parked, several deep. mostly dunes vs washes.

no trees( as Its in the desert) nor any rv hookups. beautiful dunes for miles.

    must purchase imperial dunes pass

Guide to Imperial

Camping options near Imperial, California provide diverse experiences from resort-style facilities to primitive dispersed sites. Located in the Imperial Valley at elevations averaging 60 feet below sea level, this desert region experiences extreme summer temperatures exceeding 110°F from June through September and mild winters with daytime highs in the 70s. Winter brings an influx of seasonal campers seeking relief from northern climates.

What to do

Golfing at resort campgrounds: Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort features an on-site golf course with attractive landscaping. "The grounds are well maintained, attractive, and lots of palms! Plenty of activities and facilities. It's close to the Navy base so fly overs of the Super Hornets are frequent but not loud," notes Michael in his review of Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort.

Visit Salvation Mountain: This colorful art installation stands at the entrance to Slab City and attracts visitors year-round. "Salvation Mountain is pretty amazing and safe due to its state protected and at entrance into the Slabs so it's well traveled. So much LOVE went into it," writes Jody S. about visiting the Slab City area.

Hot springs soaking: Nearby natural hot springs offer relaxation opportunities. According to TC S., "If none of this impresses you, then by all means, visit during winter to see the clever art installations, but if you're determined to hang for longer than the day, I recommend you pay to stay at Mojo's Camp or The Ponderosa where the hosts have a care about their guests."

What campers like

Winter community atmosphere: Seasonal campers create a vibrant social scene during cooler months. "The best times are during the fall and winter months as the park welcomes back its community of Snow Birds coming from Canada and the northern US. During those times the atmosphere in the evening is always festive, often with live music and an outdoor bar," shares Glen C. about Desert Trails RV Park.

Affordability options: Some campgrounds offer significant discounts. "This is also one of the few parks that accepts Passport America all days of the week. Note that Passport America discounts cannot be used with pull-through sites," mentions Glen C. when discussing Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort.

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the room between camping spots. "The sites are fairly spacious and generally separated by hedges so you are not looking directly at your neighbor's rig," notes one reviewer about Rio Bend RV & Golf Resort.

What you should know

Summer heat limitations: Extreme summer temperatures affect amenities and comfort. "During summer time the pool becomes too warm to be refreshing, and the restaurant and bar are closed. The rates are much lower in the summer," explains Glen C. about seasonal changes at Rio Bend.

Flies and insects: The natural desert setting attracts insects, particularly near water bodies. "Pretty lake, but swarming with flies and a bit of an odor. GPS will try to take you onto the wrong end of Williams Road, you need to go on Titsworth -> Smith -> then Williams," warns Robert S. about Finney Lake Camp.

Access challenges: Some locations have confusing access routes. Regarding Holtville Hot Springs, Chandra B. notes, "FREE Dispersed camping is located just past power lines behind the actual hot springs. To stay at the LTVA you must have self contained trailer, van, rv…we didn't know this."
