The Buffalo National River region near Compton sits at elevations ranging from 700 to 2,200 feet in the Ozark Mountains. Summer heat can reach the 90s with high humidity, while spring and fall camping temperatures typically range from 50-75°F. Gravel pads at most campgrounds absorb heat during summer months, creating hot surfaces for pets' paws.
What to do
Kayaking the Buffalo River: Steel Creek Campground provides direct river access just minutes from campsites. "Kayaking, swimming, and fishing were awesome!" notes Donna M., who visited Steel Creek during warmer months.
Hiking to waterfalls: The Lost Valley Trail starts near Lost Valley Canoe & Lodging, offering a moderate 2.1-mile round trip hike. "Recently reopened following flooding. This is a must see for hikers and campers alike," explains Joshua D.
Wildlife viewing: Wilderness Rider Buffalo Ranch allows visitors to see buffalo herds on the property. "Creeks, waterfalls and buffalo everywhere. The owners are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful," reports Mike B., who camped at the ranch.
What campers like
Privacy and quiet: Several campgrounds in the Compton area feature more secluded sites. "We loved camping at Down Home Campgrounds. It was very secluded and very easy to find. Location had a nice setup for the bath house and a great setup for the camp sites," explains a camper who stayed at Down Home Campgrounds.
River proximity: Many campers appreciate sites near water. "We chose this area for a perfect weekend getaway and for an exquisite Autumn camping trip... The sites along the treeline were just a minute's walk down to the river," says Ashley F. about Steel Creek Campground.
Onsite amenities: JB Trading Co. offers extensive facilities. "The grounds are beautiful, facilities are clean and in great shape. The owner is knowledgable about the area and even loaned me some tools to help repair something on my van," reports Arthur M., highlighting the campground's general store and assistance.
What you should know
Steep access roads: Kyle's Landing has challenging road conditions. "The road is steeply inclined and bumpy... While 4x4 isn't required, I definitely wouldn't take any larger vehicles or tiny cars this way," advises Ashley & Derek V. who camped at Kyle's Landing.
Limited cell service: Most campgrounds near Compton have poor connectivity. "Absolutely no cell service. No one in our group with varying cell service providers had service," reports Suzsan M. about Kyle's Landing.
Campsite spacing: Sites at some campgrounds lack privacy. "All the sites are in a big open field with picnic tables denoting specific sites, so just not a ton of privacy," notes Samantha W. about Steel Creek's layout.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Shady Oaks Campground includes a playground and nature trails. "My wife and I and our 3 children had a great time at the campground. Large playground, short nature trails, clean showers, nice folks that run the place," says Matt G. about Shady Oaks Campground.
Off-season benefits: Fall camping offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. "We were here last fall and the colors were simply gorgeous. It was quite chilly in the morning and evening/night, so pack warm clothes!" advises Ashley & Derek V. about Kyle's Landing.
Dog-friendly activities: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Compton offer dedicated pet areas. Shady Oaks features a "spacious dog park, which the dogs are currently playing at while I relax and take in nature," according to Melissa H.
Tips from RVers
Hookup considerations: Harrison RV Park offers full service sites. "Sites are pull thru with full hook ups including robust cable TV channels and screaming fast wifi. Also used the laundry room, which was clean and reasonably priced," reports Julie G. who stayed at Harrison RV Park & Campground.
Site selection: At Dogwood Springs Campground, choose sites carefully. "The lay-out of the campground is a bit odd in that some sites are only accessible by driving through another," explains Tom C., who experienced the campground's unique setup.
Seasonal preparation: RVers should be aware of weather changes. "We unfortunately had awful weather but will be back in better weather because the area is gorgeous. Site was pull through and easy to access," shares Lizabeth T. about Buffalo Outdoor Center, noting the importance of checking forecasts.
