Lakeview Campground (Az) — Coconino National Forest Recreation

Nice respite from the Sonoran Desert heat

In the off season, this sweet little national forest campground is a quiet oasis in one of the beautiful “islands of the sky” which are scattered throughout Arizona.  Up at 5000 feet, this place becomes a busy retreat for Tucsonians seeking to escape some of the summertime heat, according to the park ranger we spoke too. It's also a haven for birds!

The campground has designated section for RV’s and tents, though they are same price at just $10 per night.  Many pull-through sites are available for larger RV’s, as well as some back in spots. Each site has a HUGE cement picnic table and fire ring and are a nice size with plenty of space between sites. There are trash cans (though no recycling) throughout the campground, and a water spigot near the very clean pit toilets, thanks to the dedicated and very friendly camp hosts.  The tent sites overlook the Parker Canyon Lake and are quite spacious. There are few tent sites for groups too.

There is a nice boat dock, as well as small store near the water that sells snacks/drinks, bait, and a few camping necessities.  You can rent kayaks, paddle boats, SUPs, sailboats and small motorized fishing boats…or bring your own. There is also a nice and easy trail that follows the lake shore for about 6 miles, accessible to both hikers and mountain bikers.  From the lake trail, you can also access the Arizona Scenic Trail (the southern terminus is about 15 miles south of the lake). We also saw quite a few fisherman out enjoying the lake during mid-week.

The closest grocery stores and gas stations are in Sonoita, about 30 miles away.  Cell coverage is limited here as you are very close to the Mexican border – none in RV campground, just a bit of coverage in the tent campground.

    Village Camp Flagstaff

    An experience in itself!

RV or tiny homes…this place is AMAZING. We were in the RV side very clean, level elite back in with a concrete patio. Picnic table AND propane fire pit provided. The clubhouse has a bar and grill with a GIANT patio, live music, a store, heated pool and spa, a large game lawn and trails behind. Backs up to a national forest. Bathrooms and laundry clean and convenient. Well organized and friendly staff. Cons: trains in the distance and some interstate noise but that’s to be expected. The camp is NOT right up on the interstate you just can see it from various sections of the camp. We only had one neighbor at our site since it was on the end which was nice. Would DEFINITELY stay again.

    Homolovi State Park Campground

Lovely campground with some unusual layout issues

We had a pull through spot for our 30' Class A. In order to have the electric and water hookups(dump site only) on the"correct" side of our rig, we had to back into our pull through because we would have had to drive the wrong way down the road otherwise. And the picnic tables and grill are on that same side. So in the future, we'll park"correctly" so we can enjoy the table outside our front door and just run electric cable under the rig, along with the hose.

Otherwise, this is a really lovely spot. It's not right in Winslow, but the extra 5 minutes is worth it. It's a very peaceful spot...you don't hear the interstate noise and this place does NOT have a party atmosphere. Everyone was just super quiet and friendly. Due to traffic issues in New Mexico, we didn't get here until nearly 5(instead of original plan of 2 pm) and we had to leave early in the morning...so didn't really get to enjoy the place as we had hoped. But I saw enough to know we would NOT hesitate to return.

    Homolovi State Park Campground

    Nice option off I-40

This state park offers tent sites, RV with electrical/water and pull-through sites. In winter water was turned off at campsites but bathroom and showers were open. Trash and sewage dump also available. Just a couple of miles off I-40 which is both convenient and not very scenic. Great sunset though looking fish at the interstate. Homolovi archeological site to visit if you have time. Great cell reception both Verizon and AT&T

Flagstaff RV Park (formally Greer's Pine Shadows RV Park)

    Tall pines and tight sites

This park has been renamed to Flagstaff RV Park. The grounds are well kept in a tall evergreen forest. Spaces are fairly close but enough room to get in and out with ease. Park is right next to a highway so expect some niose. No showers/restrooms but there is a laundromat on site. Host is very friendly, booked me at the last minute and got a great spot. There are a few long-term residents, but most seem to be travelers. Wi-Fi is decent and T-Mobile got a good signal. I would stay again as a stop over

    Homolovi State Park Campground

    Great Small Park

Wonderful little state park. We had site #36. Good afternoon shade and morning sun. Pretty level. Very surprised at how quiet it is because it is pretty close to I40. Only 5 miles outside of Winslow.

Dump station and water fill at the entrance. Most sites have electric and water. No sewer at the sites. Water at sites is turned off in the winter.

Good showers and restroom. Dumpster at exit. Only thing would be better if they had signs showing which direction to go for which campsites. We had to drive around to find our site.

Good cell service for both Verizon and AT&T. Would definitely stay here again.

    Loved the ancient ruins.

    Pinegrove Campground

    Great campground

We arrived Thursday evening on a holiday weekend and all spots were filled up. Luckily we had a reserved spot beforehand. Most of the reservable spots are accessible to larger rigs. Spot 36 is very narrow and would not advice that one if In a large class A or a longer fifth wheel. We stayed in 18. The picnic table is on the back side but there is a large field directly behind. Great for the kids to run around. Shade is great throughout the day and shades the camp spot great. Considering that it is a holiday weekend there weren’t as many people as we were anticipating. Everyone was respectful of quiet hours and each other. The camp host were very friendly and even came around on the 4th just before sunset and handed out glow sticks for the kids. The showers were closed but bathrooms all open.

There are water spigots throughout the campground that water is free to get if you are camping in the campground. You are also able to fill up freshwater tank at the entrance by the showers when you arrive. Dump station is onsite.

Verizon service was terrible. Some spots were able to get LTE but not guaranteed.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

    A Sight to See

This place made our first camp spot with our new travel trailer a breeze. All sites are pull through, and level, with all types of sites available. Free dump and air compresser. Well stocked store (no alcohol for sale) with adjacent game/TV room with book and dvd trade or borrow and laundry for a fee. The shower rooms are great with locking private sink, toilet, shower. There is some highway and train noise. Meteor Crater is not to miss. I love the variety of trees placed at the sites. We would stay again.

Guide to Leupp

Camping near Leupp, Arizona encompasses high desert terrain at approximately 4,800 feet elevation with temperature swings of up to 40 degrees between day and night. The area experiences distinct seasonal changes, with summer highs frequently exceeding 90°F and winter lows dropping below freezing. Several rv parks near Leupp, Arizona provide year-round accommodations despite these challenging conditions.

What to do

Explore Meteor Crater: Located approximately 30 miles from Leupp, this impressive geological formation offers educational exhibits and viewing areas. "We easily spent 3-4 hours at the crater. We commented that the displays and information definitely showed great stewardship of this geological attraction," noted a visitor at Meteor Crater RV Park.

Visit Winslow's famous corner: Many campers use Leupp area campgrounds as a base for exploring this iconic spot. "Since Winslow was so close we took an evening to check off 'Standing on the Corner'. It was not busy and we were able to get pictures without a crowd. There are many diners near the corner," according to a camper staying near Winslow.

Access hiking trails: Trails in the Coconino National Forest are accessible from several campgrounds in the region. "I love walking out the back gate right onto a wonderful network of trails, everything from easy walking to a run on the AZT to a solid hike up Elden Mountain," shared a reviewer at Flagstaff RV Park.

What campers like

Private bathroom facilities: Many RV parks in the area feature individual bathroom units. "The shower rooms are great with locking private sink, toilet, shower," mentioned a guest at Meteor Crater RV Park. Similarly, at Take It Easy RV Park, a camper noted, "Private bathrooms with showers and wifi."

Pet amenities: Dog owners appreciate dedicated pet areas at several campgrounds. "Dog areas, fenced, about 100'x50' and there are two of them. The dog areas are clean as well and the folks here provide poo bags," reported a visitor staying near Winslow. Another camper mentioned, "The dog park is nice sized and has poop bags and garbages."

Stargazing opportunities: The relative isolation of some parks creates ideal night sky viewing conditions. "We could see the stars but there was obviously light pollution from the low-standing lights in the park. However, that was the only light pollution and if you gave it some time, your eyes adjusted to see an amazing array of stars!"

What you should know

Accessibility challenges: Some facilities have limitations for those with mobility issues. "The shower and restroom at this location is some of the best I've seen so far. The only bad thing is the entryway is an extremely tall door frame on top of a concrete lip that causes a big jump to get up and over," explained a camper at Meteor Crater RV Park.

Highway and train noise: Many campgrounds experience noise from nearby transportation routes. At one Flagstaff area campground, a reviewer mentioned, "Right off 17 this large park is convenient for an overnight and easy access to Sedona area." Another camper stated, "There is some highway and train noise."

Seasonal closures: Winter camping requires advance planning as some facilities close. "We stayed here in winter, with showers and bathrooms closed, so never saw them," noted a visitor at Kit Carson RV Park. Another camper added, "Winter camping requires preparation as water hookups at some parks may be turned off during freezing conditions."

Tips for camping with families

Laundry facilities: Some parks offer on-site laundry options to make extended stays more convenient. "The store/laundry/lounge area was very convenient," reported a camper at Meteor Crater. Another visitor noted, "There is a general store on property that has many things from groceries to camping supplies as well."

Playground access: Limited playground options exist at campgrounds closest to Leupp. The J & H RV Park in Flagstaff provides "great camping amenities" according to one reviewer who mentioned it's a "super clean property" for families.

Swimming options: Some campgrounds offer swimming facilities during summer months. A camper at Munds Park RV Resort shared, "Pool, grounds, and amenities were pristine!" Another visitor added, "The pool and hot tub are a few minute walk from the new campground area."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Many campgrounds feature level sites that simplify setup. "Our particular site is at an angle to the ones next to us, which seems odd at first but it turns out that we don't feel as much 'stacked up' and aren't looking directly into each others' windows," noted a reviewer at Flagstaff RV Park.

Power requirements: RVers should verify electrical service compatibility before arrival. Some parks like Take It Easy RV Park offer limited hookup options: "Good for an overnight. $38 was a bargain we felt. Level site close to I40 but road noise not too bad but makes it an easy stop."

Site spacing considerations: Campground layouts vary significantly in terms of privacy and spacing. "Loved our site it had so much space and we were shaded by beautiful trees!" mentioned a camper at Munds Park RV Resort, while another review noted, "The sites in the new campground are large and the two I used were level gravel lots with new hookups."
