Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Leupp, AZ

Meteor Crater RV Park provides two fenced dog areas for play, with sites spaced generously enough for pet owners. Full hookup pull-through sites accommodate tent campers and RVs, though pets must navigate sandy conditions in the designated dog areas. Visitors use The Dyrt to find real feedback on camping near Leupp, Arizona. The park enforces a strict policy keeping pets off grassy areas, directing them instead to the spacious dirt dog runs. Additional pet-friendly options include Two Guns Ghost Town dispersed camping, Cinder Hills Off Highway Vehicle Area, and Winona Dispersed Camping, all allowing pets with standard leash requirements. McHood Park Campground and Flagstaff KOA also welcome pets, with the KOA offering cabin accommodations for travelers with dogs.

Campers with pets should note that dispersed camping areas like Cinder Hills and Two Guns require bringing all supplies for pet waste management as these locations have no trash facilities. The fenced dog parks at Meteor Crater RV Park offer secure exercise areas despite getting dogs dirty in the sandy terrain. Winter camping with pets is comfortable at most locations, though temperatures drop significantly after dark. Meteor Crater's proximity to the interstate makes it convenient for overnight travelers with pets, though highway noise may affect some sites. Winslow Visitor Center provides a free overnight option for self-contained RVers with pets, offering trash disposal but no other pet amenities. Pets must remain leashed at all times in established campgrounds except within designated dog areas.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

    Not welcoming

If you are looking for a less crowded and easy spot off the highway this is your place! We arrived at the park and our first impression was to wonder if they were even open. Parked the RV close to the gas station that is there and entered to see if someone could help. We were immediately scolded by the woman at the desk. She advised us that in the future that is not where we park .We explained that since it was very desolate, and there was no signage as to where you should park or even enter that we promised never to make that mistake again. We booked online and assumed that having a “full hook up” included sewage as well. Our space did not have sewage, but did see the other row in front of us did have sewage. Chose not to go up front and deal with the unpleasant lady again so we stayed where we were. So if you book online double check when you enter that you will have a sewage hook up ! If you have dogs, they strictly enforce that they do not urinate or poop in any part of the park that is not designated. That means you have to walk your dog without them having to stop to pee to the dog park for them to do their business! And you’re not allowed to have them outside on a leash or enclosure so you are basically to keep them inside your camper only to go out to use the restroom and back inside! We have a nine month old puppy who loves to exert some energy we had to walk him to the dog park, which was a bit of a ways away from where we were located in order for him to go potty. Not very convenient in the middle of the night.!!!!

Woody Mountain Campground & RV Park

    Camp in the pines

Brought our motorcycle for day trip to Sedona. Conveniently located for the gorgeous drive. Camped in site 6, small trailer site. Came in after office hours. Paperwork, including park map, ready for us next to office. It was dark, so not super easy to find site, but little street signs helped. All dirt, so glad it wasn't muddy. All sites show wheelchair accessible, but don't see how. Charcoal grills and picnic benches scattered everywhere. Community grill area, laundry, clean bathrooms, dog park and newer playground. They are currently improving campground, so lots of tractor noise. We chose an electric and water only site. Dump station next to dog park/laundry/bathroom area. Didn't go to General Store, but they advertise a coffee and wine bar, and breakfast sandwiches. Right on Hwy 66, so a bit of traffic, and we could hear the train, but it wasn't bad. We will definitely be back and look forward to seeing the planned improvements.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

    Quiet, remote RV Park

We stayed here 3 nights on Site 19.  Gravel, level, pull through site.  Close to but not on top of neighboring RVs.  Dirt Dog Park.  Nice Laundry facilities.  Front desk staff pleasant at check in.  Nothing real exciting nearby except for the Meteor Crater that is worth seeing.  We drove 20 miles into  Winslow one night and 35 miles into Flagstaff another night for entertainment and dinner.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

Nice little campground for a night or two

Just a quick overnight but we were happy to see a dog park. The benches are broke and need repairs. It would be nice to sit while the dogs run around. You can hear the freeway but that makes it easier to access. Sites were level. Not crowded. Clean and well maintained.

    Woody Mountain

When your in a bind on road trip

This is one of those parks that mostly have RV camping & a few tent sites. There wasn't any availability at other spots since we are floating around in our little RV... the spots aren't too close together, there is shade from pine trees, bathrooms with showers & flushing toilets. Road noise & train noise (we don't mind trains). It's convenient to exploring Flagstaff. Easy hiking trail within park & small dog park.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

    Convenient to Crater and Winslow

Stayed one night on way elsewhere. Decent place not far off I-40. Could hear traffic but it was not intrusive. Good sized pull-through, completely level. Showers/bathroom looked good, clean. We did not avail ourselves of shower. Price was fair. Not many folks there so those of us who were, were spaced out well. Dog park (dirt). Would stay here again.

    Flagstaff KOA

    All the aminites you need.

Typical KOA and that ain't bad.   Clean bathrooms and showers . Lots of other amenities like a dog park.  Kids playground.  Rental bikes for riding around the campsite and fireplaces at all the sites.  My wife checked out the cabins and tents and they were really nice.  WIFI was a bit weak but usable.  $71 a night for power and water with our KOA discount.       Used the dump station when we arrived.      FYI.  $20 if you are using the freshwater service if you are off griding it.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

    Overcharging, under-delivering

PROS: Great Pull through sites. Playground for kids and dog park is a huge plus. All if not most of the amenities. Fantastic Views

CONS: The price was a bit too high and the WIFI is absolutely unusable. I mean that in every literal sense. It is so insanely slow that a simple website will take about 10 minutes to load. It threw me back to the days of dial-up. Don't advertise that you have "WiFi" when you actually have dial-up internet. That's shady. This park also runs a gas station that likes to price gouge you on the gas. (See attached photo)

    J & H RV Park

    Lovely Family-run Resort

Angie greeted us warmly by email, phone, and then in person upon check-in. If I understand correctly, her father or grandfather started this resort. The spaces are approximately nice distance apart with trees and picnic tables. Very nice to have the dump caps close to the ground; we've contended with a few others that required lifters and additional manipulation! There are bathrooms, showers, laundry, restful patios, a pet run, and even a pet washing station. Wish we had more time to stay here.

Guide to Leupp

Dispersed camping options near Leupp, Arizona range from high-desert juniper zones to ponderosa pine forests at higher elevations. Most free camping areas sit between 5,000-7,000 feet elevation, creating dramatic temperature variations between day and night, particularly in spring and fall. Overnight temperatures often drop 30-40 degrees from daytime highs, requiring appropriate sleeping gear even in summer months.

What to do

Explore lava formations: Visit Bonito Campground located near Sunset Crater National Monument, where you can examine volcanic features up close. "There are underground lava flows everywhere in this area. We were able to chat with a ranger and explore one (wear layers, it is COLD in them)," notes camper Hayley K.

Kayak Clear Creek: The waterway at McHood Park Campground offers paddling opportunities for water enthusiasts. "I woke up the next morning and went for a run around the reservoir before kayaking the 6.5 mile round trip out & back along Clear Creek," shares Alex D.

Visit historic sites: Camp at Two Guns Ghost Town and discover remnants of the past. "I find this kind of off the beaten path non-commercial history fascinating. The canyon is very pretty," writes Cheryl T., who stayed with a 35-foot fifth wheel.

What campers like

Stargazing opportunities: Many campgrounds in the Leupp area offer excellent night sky viewing due to minimal light pollution. "GORGEOUS views of the sky," reports Sam E. from Two Guns Ghost Town, despite noting some highway visibility.

Accessibility to multiple attractions: Walnut Canyon Rd Dispersed Camping serves as a strategic base for exploring. "This spot is perfect for boondocking or car camping... I loved this campsite due to its proximity to the three National Monuments near Flagstaff: Wupatki, Walnut Canyon, and Sunset Crater Volcano," explains Angela G.

Spacious campsites: Many dispersed areas allow for comfortable spacing. "This place is great. Drive as far as you want down the road but there are spots everywhere with great views. People are around but far enough to feel secluded," reports Victor F. about Cinder Hills Off Highway Vehicle Area.

What you should know

Winter temperatures: The high desert elevation means significant nighttime cooling, even in summer. At Flagstaff KOA, one camper noted: "Evening temperatures were low 20s and expected to get lower as the night grew. Great last minute decision."

Train noise: Several campgrounds experience railroad disturbance. At Winslow Visitor Center, Monica D. reports: "I enjoyed the low ambient hum of the intermittent trains passing by. They do not brake or sound off their whistles as they roll through town. It's just a low rumble."

Fire restrictions: Regulations change seasonally due to wildfire danger. One visitor to Bonito Campground observed: "No fires allowed when I was there, but that was not a problem. It was cold even in May, so come prepared."

Terrain considerations: Many dog-friendly campgrounds near Leupp feature volcanic soil that may affect pets. "We brought our two dogs and they loved it but the volcanic rock did start to bother their paws a few days in so I recommend booties," advises Kimberly A. from Bonito Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Look for educational opportunities: Ranger programs enhance family experiences. "The rangers came by each day to invite us to whatever program they were running that evening. Nice touch," shares a Bonito Campground visitor.

Consider amenities for kids: Pinegrove Campground offers family-friendly facilities. "Flush toilets. Pay showers. Weekend ranger talks at small amphitheater. Most sites are spread out but some quite close. Nice flat spot for one big tent or two small ones at each site," explains JD G.

Be prepared for insects: Some seasons bring heavy bug activity. One camper at Pinegrove noted: "The bugs were super intense. We didn't have a screened in 'porch' and it was brutal. Maybe it was just the time of year."

Bring wildlife identification materials: Various wildlife sightings enhance children's experiences. "I saw cows, elk, ravens, and deer. That was awesome!" reports a camper from Walnut Canyon Rd.

Tips from RVers

Check site accessibility before committing: Many dispersed camping roads require assessment. "The many side roads into the sites are a variety of ruts and bumps - it's helpful to pause the rig on the road and walk in to make sure you're OK with the 'driveway' before committing to a particular site," advises Marcy about Walnut Canyon Rd.

Note campground layouts: Several dog-friendly campgrounds near Leupp have specific configurations. "All sites are pull through, and level, with all types of sites available. Free dump and air compresser," notes Jessica M. about Meteor Crater RV Park.

Watch for road conditions: Many access roads require careful navigation. "This was a good stay. Getting there was not a lot of fun going down a washboard forest service road," reports Craig R. about Winona Dispersed Camping.

Be prepared for variable weather: Temperature fluctuations can be extreme. "We were running away from the snow in Colorado Springs only to finally arrive here and get snowed on! But we are on a lovely flat spot," shares a visitor to Meteor Crater.
