Dispersed camping near Lake Montezuma provides access to central Arizona's high desert terrain at elevations ranging from 3,300 to 3,900 feet. The Beaver Creek area flowing through this region creates unique riparian habitat zones where campers can experience desert vegetation alongside water-loving species. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F between June and August, while winter nights can drop below freezing.
What to do
Creek swimming: Forest Road 525 offers proximity to swimming spots along Oak Creek. "This was a great dispersed site - we showed up just before sunset on a Tuesday night and drove about 5 miles in. All of the pull-offs had a few campers so we just chose the least crowded. Great view of the rolling hillside, clear skies, and close to all your Sedona adventures," notes Jacs D.
Wineries exploration: 15 minutes away from camping areas. "There are 2 Vineyards down the road that we enjoyed... DA Ranch was absolutely beautiful and our favorite," shares Jordan H. from Lo Lo Mai Springs Resort.
Stargazing: Open areas provide excellent night sky viewing conditions. "Large camping site, very open space with clear sky-view. 1 site with 1 fire ring but it could share more than 1 group if needed. Each site far from each other where you can notice their existence," explains Korapin S. about dispersed camping options.
Hiking Bell Trail: Near FR689 dispersed camping areas. "As a bonus, this site is just a few miles out from the Beaver Creek and right down the road from the Bell Trail trailhead parking lot," reports Monica M.
What campers like
Fire rings at multiple sites: Most established dispersed areas have pre-existing fire rings. "We kept going after all sites were taken and still found a place to pull off. Good views. Sedan ok," notes Karen about FR689 Dispersed Camping.
Shaded sites: Some campgrounds offer protection from summer heat. "The sites are shady, spacious and sparkling clean. There are hiking trails that lead to a nearby creek, beautiful bird feeders throughout the property, a nice dog run for furry friends and plenty of lush green grass for an impromptu picnic," shares Nichole D. about Zane Grey RV Village.
Proximity to attractions: Convenient base camps for exploring. "Verde Ranch was an amazing stay for us. The Customer Service and Hospitality was truly why we came back. All the amenities one could ask for. But what made our stay here awesome was the proximity to everything. Hiking, backpacking, off roading, and of course access to all the cool places in Flagstaff and Sedona," explains Scott and Ariane T.
Cell reception: Variable but functional at some locations. "Cell service was ok, not great but it was usable. Some hikes and trails in the area. People come to this area for day use hiking as well. Quiet area, not far from the main highway, but it feels like it's far," reports Laura M.
What you should know
Campsite availability: Popular areas fill quickly, especially in spring and fall. "Spots here 14 days, rangers will take down your license and take a pic. Close to Sedona... very clean and quiet," reports Beth M. about dispersed camping areas.
