Most campgrounds near South Range permit dogs on leashes no longer than 8 feet, with Jay Cooke State Park, Spirit Mountain Campground, and Buffalo Valley Camping maintaining similar pet policies. The Backyard at Amnicon Lake offers 100 pet-friendly sites with electric hookups where campers can enjoy fire pits and picnic tables with their dogs. Sites at Pattison are mostly level, treed, and spacious with ample room for both camping equipment and pets. Restrooms and shower facilities at most campgrounds are regularly cleaned and maintained, though some reviews note mildew issues in shower areas at smaller facilities. Campgrounds near South Range typically operate seasonally, with most open from May through October, while Pattison State Park and several others remain accessible year-round.

Hiking trails throughout the region provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with Pattison State Park featuring well-maintained paths leading to Big Manitou Falls, Wisconsin's highest waterfall at 165 feet. The backpacking sites at Pattison offer a more secluded experience with pets, though trail markers can be limited in some areas affected by previous flooding. Little Manitou Falls is accessible via a 1.5-mile hike from the White Birch backpacking site, allowing campers and their pets to enjoy waterfall views with minimal crowds. Most campgrounds require pets to be leashed at all times on trails and in camping areas to protect wildlife and other visitors. Local pet owners should note that swimming areas at some parks, including Pattison's man-made beach, may periodically close due to flooding or seasonal maintenance, limiting water recreation options for dogs during certain times.

      North View Campground

      Serene Serenity

Pet friendly and the perfect get away. Relaxing, quiet and surrounded by nature. We’re lucky enough to plan ahead and book for the fall colors. Highly recommended for those who respect nature, it’s beauty and the silence they encompass.

Cart-In Campground — Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

      Cart in sites are beautiful!

We love this campground for many reasons. First, the cart in sites are just far enough away from the parking lot that there is very little noise, but close enough you can get to your car easily (1/4 mile maybe). Our favorite site has a big, huge rock next to it and a raised tent pad. All the sites are secluded. Many, many trees to separate the sites from one another. Near the parking area is a bathroom and shower combo, but there are outhouse type of bathrooms scattered closer to the cart in sites. Very close to Lake Superior (easy walk) and bear boxes are at every site (strong metal boxes with shelves and locks for your food). Just beware of the black flies in the summertime. They are ruthless!! Don't take your dog if you want them to be comfortable. For some reason, the black flies love to land on dogs, particularly black ones, and there isn't a bug spray that will shoo them away. We actually left 30 min after arrival (not even camping one night) last July because they were so bad. By the time we reached the car, there were at least 30 on my dog's back.

Bottom line, avoid black fly season and this is a spectacular campground! We are repeat customers!

      Spirit Lake RV and Marina

Where RV’s and Boats are Neighbors

The entrance to the marina & campground is a little rough and could use some attention. Camp office & store and restrooms could also use some fresh-ing up as well. Staff was friendly and helpful.

If you like being next to the water in your RV you would be hard pressed to find an RV site any closer to the water. We had ships / sailboats as your neighbors.

Water and electric sites only that seemed to also be positioned for docked boats. Most sites were pretty level except for the occasional pot hole and mud puddle. Some trees were planted in the RV spot areas.

Dump station was a challenge with RV and a blue boy. To dump RV you most likely need to turn around and back in. Watched several RV’ers had some trouble getting their rigs in a good position to dump. I chose to use my tote (blue boy) and I had to lift / drag it up on a nearby railroad tie next to dump because the PVC sewer pipe was 4-6” above the ground. They did have a dump service for an additional fee, that was used by several boats during our stay.

Great proximity to Duluth and like many RV parks it comes with railroad tracks close by. The RV campground felt like a after thought to the marina but it works.

Severe weather rolled in on our last night and things got pretty scary. We thought at one point that we might tip over from high winds.. You are very exposed when you are parked on what could almost be called a “dock”. Several of the boats that were tied up next to use and their docks broke loose and were floating in bay. The storm does not reflect the review score but more of something to be considered.

      Pattison State Park Campground

      Loved this campground!

This was a really nice campground. Nice and quiet for its medium size. Wooded sites are nicely spaced (but never far enough away). Facilities were clean and maintained. Liked all the possibilities for hiking and the proximity to other State parks in Northern wisconsin. We visited Cooper Falls as well. Took a trail path out of the campground to the most amazing water fall. Showers available in season. Pit toilets but nicely maintained.

      Jay Cooke State Park Campground

      Nice state park camping

We stopped here on our way to north Minnesota. Originally we planned 2 days but really needed to rest so extended it to 4 days. It was a little hairy getting to, the 2 lane winding road with the raging river on one side did slow us down a bit.  The Rangers were friendly and accommodating. The park had taken quite a beating with the winter storm that had been there the previous week, a lot of sites were closed due to trees down and snow.  While we were there they were actively cleaning up, but left in the afternoon so we had no disturbances from saws or equipment noise. The water was not turned on yet for the season, so the bathroom/showers and dump station were not available.  There was a potable water source at the front of our loop to fill our fresh tank and our water storage cubes.  The sites were shaded well, and easy to back into.  We had to work a bit to get our camper level but that may have been due to the snow and water that was on the site so we figured it was par for the course.  We walked to the Welcome Center and the swinging bridge, there were multiple hiking trails accessible by the camping area.  It was relatively busy on the weekend but cleared out during the week.  We had lots of wildlife visitors.  The park is pet friendly.  We found affordable propane and a dump site closer to Duluth.

    Guide to South Range

Campgrounds near South Range, Wisconsin offer a variety of terrain options from lakeside settings to wooded areas within close proximity to both natural attractions and urban amenities. The region sits at the western edge of Lake Superior, with elevations ranging from 600-1,300 feet and a climate characterized by warm summers and cold winters. Seasonal considerations are important as most campgrounds operate from May through October, though some like Buffalo Valley Camping remain open year-round.

    What to do

Explore Lake Activities: At Anchor Inn Campground, campers have water recreation options with "Short drive to Lake Superior" according to MaryAnn M. The campground provides affordable access to the Apostle Islands region.

Visit Urban Attractions: Lakehead Boat Basin places campers near Duluth's highlights. "Easy walk to Canal Park with the world famous Lift Bridge, Museum's, Restaurants and regular tourist items," notes Mark N. The marina setting offers unique ship-watching opportunities as "the lift bridge schedule could throw off arrival and departure since you need to travel over it to reach the marina."

Mountain Biking Adventures: Spirit Mountain Campground serves as an excellent base for cycling enthusiasts. Michelle P. describes it as "a mountain bikers paradise," noting it's "heavily wooded and beautiful! Very close to Duluth." The campground connects directly to trail networks, with Beth W. adding, "The best part was being able to bike down the trails right from the campground!"

Water Sports: At Fond du Lac City Campground, water activities are readily accessible. "Great place. Plenty to do... Great mountain bike trails across the road, and hiking trails only right down the road about 6 blocks. Lots of Canoe and kayak rentals," writes Crosby W., highlighting the St. Louis River access through "a private boat landing."

    What campers like

Spacious Sites: Campers appreciate well-separated camping spots that offer privacy. Jim H. at Pattison State Park Campground notes the campground is "Clean and each site is well separated and lots of trees." Another reviewer mentions, "The sites are great, spacious and not too close. They are flat and grassy, which I like."

Clean Facilities: Well-maintained shower and bathroom facilities rank high with campers. At Jay Cooke State Park Campground, a visitor describes "a very new and has my favorite layout where there is one main area with toilets and sinks and separate rooms accessible from the outside for private shower rooms." Gloria S. praises Buffalo Valley Camping for "clean bathrooms and showers" alongside their "large spot for our RV" and "beautiful area."

Waterfall Access: Natural water features attract campers to certain sites. Terry E. notes that Pattison State Park has "a beautiful waterfall, must see landscapes for photographers and nature seekers alike." Robin M. elaborates that "The falls are so beautiful. Well taken care of park with wonderful hiking trails, pet friendly clean park."

On-Site Dining Options: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near South Range offer the convenience of on-site food service. Briana H. mentions Buffalo Valley Camping's "great bar & grill" where "The bar & grill had great food and service." At The Backyard at Amnicon Lake, Lisa M. notes, "The pizza here was great, as were the cheese curds, and the hospitality was wonderful."

    What you should know

Weather Considerations: The region experiences variable conditions that can impact camping comfort. At Jay Cooke State Park, Lydia N. reports on the backpacking site: "It was pretty buggy and ticks were bad, but that's to be expected. Bog/marsh was beautiful with some wildlife and was generally a very pleasant place to camp. It did rain quite a bit while I was there."

Varying Campsite Quality: Not all sites within a campground are equal. At Indian Point City Campground, Brook Jorgensen notes, "Campsite was clean but not very private," adding that "quiet time from 10pm to 8am" is enforced. The campground offers "electric and city water hookup" sites.

Shower Facilities: Shower availability varies across campgrounds. Anna D. points out that some sites at Pattison State Park have "no hook ups" with "pit toilet next door up hill." At Northland Camping & RV Park, Kathy H. noted, "Bathrooms kept clean except the mold on the shower curtains," while Kenneth B. observed the campground "meets all your needs with electric, water, sewer, laundry, shower rooms; even a pool."

Seasonal Limitations: Operating schedules differ among dog-friendly campgrounds near South Range. Most close by mid-October, though some remain accessible year-round. Joseph A. mentions Buffalo Valley Camping "offer[s] year around camping," noting, "Great Location not far from Duluth, and right off the interstate for easy access."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground Access: Some campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. At Spirit Mountain Campground, jennifer M. notes there is "a spot where they have mini golf, mountain luge, and mountain biking." Fond du Lac City offers "a small playground and sandbox for kids. Horseshoes, ladder toss, and bag toss provided by campground."

Site Selection for Privacy: For families wanting seclusion, certain campgrounds offer more private sites. At Jay Cooke State Park Campground, Krista T. advises, "If you are camping with multiple tents it might be a good idea to get multiple sites OR just do your research to make sure that the tent pad measurements listed on the reservation site are going to be sufficient."

Kid-Friendly Activities: Look for campgrounds with multiple recreation options. Al J. describes Pattison State Park as an "Awesome state park! Right along side of State Hwy 53. All the amenities you would need... Playground in good shape and very large area's for BBQing. Also nice trail system for hiking with a few site's for backpacking in."

Family-Oriented Atmosphere: Certain campgrounds specifically cater to families. Anni O. describes Fond du Lac City Campground: "It was a very quiet place and there were many families with children who were playing on the small playground, shooting hoops, fishing, and riding bike. Many biking and hiking trails close by."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup Availability: Electric and water access varies significantly between pet-friendly campgrounds near South Range. At The Backyard at Amnicon Lake, Lee D. notes, "Site 35 had electricity and water. No privacy or separation between sites, as would be expected in an RV park."

Site Leveling: Terrain affects the ease of setup. Ryan S. found at Lakehead Boat Basin that "sites are decent-size and mostly level." This urban camping option provides "a double-width parking spot, which is room enough for a trailer and tow vehicle."

Size Restrictions: Larger rigs face limitations at some locations. Kenneth B. cautions that Northland Camping & RV Park "meets all your needs with electric, water, sewer, laundry, shower rooms," but MaryAnn M. found Anchor Inn Campground has "very tight getting into spaces for a large rig."
