Big Foot Beach State Park Campground

nice state park with big sites and small beach

Nice large sites. gravel spot for arc/trailer. fire pit and picnic table. trails for hiking are nice, but the overall camping area isn’t very big. 100 sites only. 30 with electric. this was the first time all season that the bugs Annoyed us. the beach is about 10 feet of sand off a busy road and is not pet friendly. nice spot to stay if you want to avoid paying lake Geneva prices for a room.

    Wisconsin State Fair RV Park

    Really Great City Park

The quality of most city parks, especially on the east side, is abhorrent simply because they can be. I always have low expectations when I enter a city that basically has one option for RVs.

That being said, this is one of the best I’ve been to. Granted, it features things you would expect from a city park: cramped spaces, lots of noise, high nightly rates. But we lucked out getting one of the bigger spots.

Pros: LOCATION, Good wifi, great signal, friendly staff, lots of washers and dryers with a change machine, will accept and hold packages for guests.

Cons: The sewage system is strange at this park. We couldn’t reach ours during our stay and a camper had blocked the dump station so we pulled through in a vacant spot to dump. The pipe is highly elevated, making the process more hands-on than one would like. Bathrooms could have been cleaner, but I mostly blame guests for not picking up after themselves. The automated site selection process, which many have mentioned, is frustrating. I received six emails between Mar-Jun indicating they switched my spot. I noticed they placed a lot of large fifth wheels in tiny back in spaces when plenty pull throughs were available. Wonky system.

Kettle Moraine Southern Unit — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit

    Ottawa Lake Campground

You can camp year around in this campground. Most recent 2 times were winter camping. No host so buying wood is an issue, but pick a site on the edge and there is more than enough free. Bring a saw. Nice place for solitude. No rowdies in winter. Close to hiking. 10 minutes from a town if needed.

Ottawa Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit

Great spot for hiking Kettle Moraine

Campsites are kept up and quite clean. Some have a beautiful view of lake. Some water fountains did not work, however sinks were always working. So many little trails all throughout the campsite. Family friendly (parks, beach, pet friendly)

    NAVSTA Great Lakes RV Campground

    Short stop

It was a small RV park had a concert pad but not big enough for a 43 ft motor home. The site was 60 ft, but the whole site was not concrete. We were there for one night, it rained and the whole site had puddles around it. I do understand that it is a RV site but we stayed at others that were not concrete pad and did not flood this much. It was extremely muddy. Water was very. None of the sites had sewage, the dump station was about a mile down the road. They have a few 50 amp lots. We did not have one. The site had I would call it an out house. I did not see a bath house with showers. The out house only had a toilet, no sink for hand washing. The location was right on the water so that was nice. Other than that I was not impressed.

Big Foot Beach State Park Campground

    Surprising secret camp ground

We love private campsites, far enough away from other campers, yet close enough to amenities. We chose a walk in site #16 which was nice but I wish we chose one a bit further in. Bathrooms where very clean. Trails are great. Pet friendly - we brought our small, quiet dogs. Dog friendly restaurant right next to the camp site.

Sunset Campground — Richard Bong State Recreation Area

    Best site at the campground

Pros: great hiking trails, nice lake to kayak on, family friendly beach and picnic areas

Cons: Not great fishing, no dog friendly swim area, the beach/fishing pier/boat launch are all pretty far from the campsites. There is a hiking trail down to it, but when bringing a bunch of beach gear/kid toys it’s much easier to throw it all in the car and drive down there.

We have been to Bong a few times and this site was by far the best we’ve stayed at. Evenly sunny/shaded. Not overly buggy. Couldn’t see the people in the sites next to us. Had a flat, grassy area for the tent. It also had a couple mature trees to attach the dog’s zip line to.

Turner Lake South — Chain O' Lakes State Park

Awesome choice for campers on a budget

These campsites are as low as $12/night!! One of my favorite spots to test new gear. Family friendly. There’s some small trails around as well that are beginner. There was electricity, however those sites are $25/night. Bathrooms could’ve been cleaner but we were grateful for the facility which doubled as a storm shelter. There’s indoor showers and bathrooms. There are also cabins at this campsite, not sure on pricing tho

Guide to Franksville

Within 35 miles of Franksville, Wisconsin, campers find diverse options across southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The region sits at elevations between 580-750 feet with mostly flat terrain and small rolling hills. Lake Michigan influences the climate, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 65-85°F while spring and fall camping requires preparation for sudden temperature changes.

What to do

Hiking trails: The Richard Bong State Recreation Area features numerous trails for all skill levels. "The trails are great for hiking and bird watching. We love going out in the spring when the bull frogs are out and listening to their chorus," notes a camper at Sunrise Campground.

Water recreation: Chain O' Lakes State Park offers multiple lakes for fishing and boating. "Lots of wooded trails within the campground. Perfect if you have a boat and want access to the Chain of Lakes," reports a reviewer at Mud Lake East.

Beach access: Several campgrounds feature swimming areas with sandy beaches. "The beach on the shores of Lake Nagawicka is well-groomed, clean, has a seasonal lifeguard and a playground within earshot," according to a visitor at Naga-Waukee Park.

What campers like

Lake views: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites. "Beautiful views overlooking Turtle Lake. Friendly and helpful staff," writes a reviewer at Snug Harbor Inn Campground. The three-tiered campground design ensures most sites have views of the water.

Spacious sites: Campgrounds in the region typically offer generous spacing. "Generously sized sites in wooded surroundings," notes a camper about Cliffside Park. Another mentions "level sites with electric and water at each site. Well taken care of grounds."

Proximity to attractions: The central location provides easy access to both Milwaukee and Chicago. "Perfect campground for what it is! Big paved parking lot with full hookups. Very close to downtown, right off of interstate. Clean facilities. We were visiting family downtown and it was very convenient," explains a camper at Wisconsin State Fair RV Park.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the Franksville area operate from April through October. Naga-Waukee Park runs "April 1st through November 4th" with varying bathroom options including "pit toilets to port-o-potties. Showers available at the Beach House."

Reservation requirements: Several parks require advance planning, especially for summer weekends. "Summer months May through April you do have to book 2 nights minimum. That was a little annoying as it already seemed high price of $60 per night," notes a Wisconsin State Fair RV Park visitor.

Traffic noise: Due to the proximity to urban areas, some campgrounds experience road noise. "It is quite nice and pretty out here. A lot of amenities you'll find at other campgrounds. It is very close to main roads as I heard traffic all day and sometimes sirens," reports a camper at Naga-Waukee Park.

Tips for camping with families

Beach activities: Muskego Park features a spring-fed pond popular with families. "A spring fed pond for swimming and fishing. Trails that took you through woods and then prairie and then up a decent elevation for an amazing view of the surrounding area," shares a visitor.

Playground access: Many campgrounds include play areas for children. "Lots of playground areas for the kids, the pool was working and it was heated," notes a reviewer at Happy Acres Kampground.

Nature programs: Some parks offer educational activities. "The Weekend we were here they had a free Kids fishing weekend and John the naturalist was amazing!! There is a ton to do at this park the nature center has activities all weekend long," explains a camper at Sunrise Campground.

Tips from RVers

RV park selection: Cliffside Park Campground offers dedicated RV amenities. "Campsites can fit up to a 45' RV, and while tents are allowed, there is not a separate tent section. Each site has water but in order to reach some of the spigots you would need more than a 50' water hose so choose your site with that in mind," advises an RVer.

Electrical service variability: RV parks near Franksville provide different electrical options. "This is a huge parking lot for the State Fair. Very nice staff. Nice facilities were average and clean. We didn't know it, but our site was 15 amp. On the same pole were two 30 amps. So we just use that because no one was there," notes a Wisconsin State Fair RV Park visitor.

Local navigation: The RV parks around Franksville have varying access routes. "Easy campground to get in and out of," writes a reviewer about Cliffside Park, though they also note "Roads were narrow and a little hard to navigate with a big RV."
