Ottawa Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit

    Enjoying Ottawa Lake Campground

We've camped here before and like it. The sites are spacious and most seem to have shade for at least part of the day. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. Ours had a grill the folded in and out, not sure if all have it. The beach is great, open and lots of room to set up for the day either on the grass or sand. There are flush toilets at the beach. There are rentable pavilions. We didn't see any garbage bins nearby so bring a trash bag to carry out. The showers are hot but that's the best thing about them. They're not very big and don't have a curtain to separate changing area and shower. With 2 kids, things tend to get a little wet. However, they get the job done. We love the location. Close to hiking: Scuppernong Trail on the Ice Age Trail and Scuppernong Spring Nature Trail and a few others. Close to shopping and restaurants, if needed. Only downside to our site was the highway (CR-ZZ) was on the other side of the trees and busy. All said, we'll most likely be back again.

    Fremont RV Campground

    Forest campground

Camped with husband and two children. It's a well-maintained campground with a lot of trees throughout, but note that the trees don't separate your individual sites. However, I was pleasantly surprised for a kids-themed facility. Just make sure you don't get one of the few sites along the main road.

The kids enjoyed the pool that had a twisty water slide, basketball hoops, a float turtle they all loved to climb, and a playground with the dumping bucket. The mini golf was really decent and we enjoyed the weekend entertainment of music on the grounds and at the pool party. There is an arcades room, free wifi, and very well stocked general store.

They have weekly themes throughout the summer and Yogi makes appearances that the kids love. Our friends stayed in cabins a few yards away and those were a nice, comfortable choice for them with running air conditioning and a shower.

It was nice to see that a camp ranger walked around to control noise levels, which didn't seem to be an issue. That's appreciated by us tenters.

Family Fun & Lots of Space

We came here with a group of four families. It was excellent to have tent, cabin and rv spots available as each family felt comfortable staying there. Very spacious campsites. Clean and well manicured. They have a fully stocked store, pool, kangaroo pad and lake with inflatable slides etc. Their playground is awesome and kept all 12 kids ages 1-12 busy for the whole day. We would stay there again. Showers are 25cents for 4mins. Pretty clean and updated bathroom facilities.

    Quiet hours not enforced

We were just looking for a site to stay overnight after a wedding we attended near by.  The sites ver very close together, but the biggest complaint is the noise into the wee hours of the morning.  What good are quiet hours if they are not enforced?  The people across from us were playing music and being loud well past 1:00 am.  Overall the park looks nice, but we would not recommend this place based on the noise after quiet hours.

    Kohler-Andrae State Park

Great state park , close to the lake & Sheboygan

Really nice state park with pretty good space in between sites. Some easy, limited elevation hikes around the campground, and a nice mix of pine trees/marsh/open space. Just a few minutes walk to Lake Michigan and a nice beach. Only flaw is the inconsistency with fire pits, some on the opposite side that doesn't give you much privacy for a campfire. The sites on the road aren't great, but at least the picnic table and fire pits are secluded with those.

Ottawa Lake Campground — Kettle Moraine State Forest-Southern Unit

Large wooded sites- near loud road

The campground is well kept with several bathrooms and showers. We have a 30ft travel trailer, and it was easy to maneuver around the campground. We did have to wait in line to fill the water tank, but the water pressure was good and it didn’t take too long. We stayed at site 327e, which was very easy to back in to and was mostly level. Easy access to electrical and plenty of space for slide outs. A nice big fire pit with large flat grate for cooking, one of the best set ups I’ve seen. Would be perfect, but there’s a loud highway WI-67 traffic about 20 ft from the campsite. Tons of loud motorcycles and trucks with constant traffic. If you want solitude I would avoid sites 305e-328e, all of the odd number sites back up to the road. Evens, except for 328e, are inside and are better. Video shows traffic and noise. I would come back, but pick a site inside the campground and away from highway.

    Kohler-Andrae State Park

Kohler - Andrae State Park, WI

Riding my bicycle laden with touring gear in the rain, I was quite wet by the time I arrived at the state park entrance. The two ladies inside were very helpful and got me set up in a site near the showers. However after riding the mile to get to the site I found it occupied. They had until 3 to leave. Luckily my phone had service so I called and switched to the next one over. I set up my tent and threw my stuff inside as the rain drizzled around me.

The rain gave way around 3 so I went out and tended to the chain. As I was working the camp hosts came by. They cleaned out the fire pit and found broken glass, watermelon and other trash left by the last group. We had a nice conversation. They said that they knew the couple who hosts the next state park I'm riding to so I'll pass on their hellos. Then I walked out to the beach and found whitecaps on the waves.

This is a great state park and well worth your stopping by.

    Great Family Campground!

Site was spacious but very close to your neighbors. Lots to do in the area. Bathrooms and showers were clean. The beach was not clean and very hard to walk on, very rocky. Electricity on site and water near by. Great trails close by.

Menomonee Park by Waukesha County Parks

    Nice park

Great park with swimming beach, trails, dog park, and archery range. Campsites were ok, not much separation or privacy at all. Pit toilets and metros desperately need to be cleaned more often. We had very noisy neighbors that did not respect the quiet hours rule and park staff did nothing to intervene. Very convenient that they drive through the Campground to sell/deliver firewood tho. I'd stay here again because the park overall is great, but I would try to choose a better site. #9 looked alright, and in the 20#s looked a bit more tree lined and bigger.

What to do

Swimming and water recreation: Ottawa Lake Campground provides a clean swimming beach that hosts triathlons during summer months. "The lake is very clean and the site are a good size. Gets very busy on the weekends!" notes camper Neysha R. about Ottawa Lake Campground.

Disc golf and outdoor activities: Broughton Sheboygan Marsh Park offers an 18-hole disc golf course and a nine-hole soccer ball course alongside recently renovated playgrounds. Brand new play ground added," making Broughton Sheboygan Marsh Park Campground a versatile recreation spot.

Hiking trails: Menomonee Park features extensive trail networks for various activities. "The park has a lot of trails for hiking, biking and some horse trails. The quarry is good for swimming, kayaking, or canoeing," reports Matt N. Trails vary from flat, easy loops to more challenging terrain through wooded areas.

What campers like

Large, wooded campsites: Naga-Waukee Park offers secluded sites despite its proximity to urban areas. "A very nice, woodsy campground. Feels like you are further north than you really are!" writes Gina L. about Naga-Waukee Park. The wooded settings provide shade and privacy between sites.

Convenient firewood delivery: Several campgrounds offer direct-to-site firewood delivery. At Menomonee Park, "The Ranger will come by often with wood to buy," and similarly at Naga-Waukee, campers report "Plenty of free wood available for the fire," making campfire setup easier after a day of activities.

Indoor amenities for weather flexibility: The Playful Goose Campground features an indoor pool that families appreciate during unpredictable weather. "Indoor pool great for kids. Bath house was a bit dated but okay. Coin operated showers, 25 cent for several minutes," reports Beth B. from The Playful Goose Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds near Brownsville operate from April or May through October or mid-November. Kohler-Andrae and Broughton Marsh Park are exceptions, offering year-round camping options, though with limited winter services.

Reservation requirements: Popular glamping sites close to Brownsville, Wisconsin fill quickly, especially for summer weekends. Silver Springs Campsites requires advance planning, with campers noting, "This really is a summer camp kind of place. Lots of sites, mostly RVs, and tons of activities for kids," according to Kim L. from Silver Springs Campsites.

Noise considerations: Proximity to roads affects some campgrounds. At Naga-Waukee Park, a camper observed, "It is quite nice and pretty out here. A lot of amenities you'll find at other campgrounds. It is very close to main roads as I heard traffic all day and sometimes sirens."

Weather variability: Spring camping often means dealing with wet ground conditions. One camper at The Playful Goose mentioned their "site was completely soaking wet" after rain, making tent stakes difficult to secure.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Breezy Hill Campground offers numerous child-focused amenities. "Family friendly campground. Plenty for the kids to do. Theres a fishing pond (catch and release) arcade, jumping pillow etc. Owners are friendly and helpful," writes Matthew J. about Breezy Hill Campground.

Budget planning: Many campgrounds charge additional fees beyond basic site costs. Visitor day passes typically cost $5 per person, and amenities like showers may require quarters. At The Playful Goose, "Coin operated showers, 25 cent for several minutes," while at Breezy Hill, "if you want visitors, there is a $5/visitor fee."

Site selection strategy: For families seeking quiet, request sites away from main roads and activity centers. At Kohler-Andrae State Park, "The sites on the road aren't great, but at least the picnic table and fire pits are secluded with those," advises Justin F. from Kohler-Andrae State Park.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Electric sites at Ottawa Lake Campground fill quickly. One RVer advises, "We've been full time RVers for 4 years and this is a beautiful campground close to 'home'. We stay here a couple of times each year for doctor and dentist appointments."

Site approach considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. The Playful Goose camper Amber C. noted, "The roads in campground were all very narrow so we had to drive on it if a car was coming. If they could widen the roads a bit it would be helpful."

Water connection planning: Broughton Marsh Park has limited water spigot access. A visitor pointed out, "One spigot for every four sites for water so 100 foot hose is required," making long water hoses essential for RV camping in this area.
