Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Harpers Ferry, WV

It’s one of those camp sites that is right off the bike path, not far from Harper’s Ferry. It’s small with only one picnic table and one grill, but plenty of area for about 3-4 camp sites. It is gorgeous though waking up right along the Potomac. A great place to camp for free if you’re doing a bike pack up from DC to Harper’s Ferry and then back the next day. Or a great place to stop as one of the stops from Pittsburgh to DC.

We hiked from Harper's Ferry to Pen Mar on the AT and used this fabulous campground as a base station the entire 5 days.  The level and semi-private sites were excellent, although there were no water hook ups at each site.  We were allowed to fill the camper with water before we set up, which worked out fine.

There is a swim area and some trails, but our focus was on the AT so we did not use them much.  The hosts were wonderful, bathroom facilities were older but well maintained, and the overall campground atmosphere was great!

Good campground but there don't seem to be a ton of private spots. We lucked out and go a spot on Dogwood loop, site 20, with nobody on one side and some space between our site and the other site on the other side. There was water and bathrooms right across the road. Campground had showers but we didn't use them so I'm not sure how clean they are. We also didn't make it down to the lake. Easy check in and out and they sold us wood at check in. Close to the AT and only about an hour from Harper's Ferry where we spent the day.

This place is right outside the gate of Harpers Ferry NP. We walked to the shuttle bus stop. It is a very large KOA, and was almost empty when we visited in September. The original site the gave us had a large rut and washed out spot, so we could not get level. I checked in the office and the reassigned another space that was much better. Full hook ups, nice clean shower and bathrooms, playground, pool, large dog park.

We set up camp at Harpers Ferry/Civil War Battlefields KOA Holiday as our launchpad to visit the historic sites in and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and Frederick, Maryland. 

We paid$114/night(average per night, including fees and taxes) for Site# 94. A bit pricey considering a lack of elbow room, but it’s a great location and everything is well-kept. 

THINGS I LIKED: 

• Location, Location, Location! Close proximity to plenty of historic and tourist places to visit. The Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Visitor Center is literally next door. Harpers Ferry Lower Town and Bolivar Heights are a few minutes by car(or shuttle from the Visitor Center). Frederick and Antietam are each barely 30-minutes by car. Gettysburg, Baltimore, and DC are about an hour’s drive. 

• Clean and level gravel site with well-maintained utility hook-ups. 

• Great campground store filled with food, drinks, camp supplies, souvenirs, and essentials you may need while away from home. 

• Friendly staff in the office& store. 

• The whole park is quiet and well-maintained. 

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH: 

• Heads up, big rig owners! Our Pull-thru FHU Patio site(#199) had a serious slope. It was impossible to level my 45’ motorhome without elevating the front wheels dangerously in the air. The nice staff kindly moved us to a FHU site without the patio and furniture. And refunded the difference in price for the lesser site. Thanks for providing the move but ‘premium’ sites should be somewhat level, am I right? 

• Get cozy, the sites are quite small and tightly packed together. 

• A $3 per night“Pet Fee” for our small, mostly-indoor dog felt a bit like nickel-and-diming. I realize it only amounted to an extra$12, but he didn’t need any extra gravel. 

WOULD WE COME BACK? 

• Absolutely, this is a nice campground with lots of great places nearby including Harpers Ferry, Antietam, Frederick, Washington DC, Baltimore, and more.

The hike that leads to the lookout about harpers ferry was fantastic. This hike takes you well above the town settled in West Virginia. While some points are pretty steep don’t let this deter you from completing it. The trail is well maintained, marked, and exciting. It is filled with tons of history and when you walk across the bridge from the town be looking out for all the locks on the bridge that have been left behind by other avid hikers

Harper's Ferry is a little town in WV nestled right next to the Potomac River. It's also a convenient halfwayish point on the Appalachian Trail. One of my friends and I stayed here while we were section hiking the AT. The campground is pretty nice, with cabins, tent sites, and RV sites. It's also got a lot of extra activities that you can do. Zip lining, tubing, rafting the Potomac, and even an adventure park, you name it. You definitely won't be bored wile staying at this campground.

Harper's Ferry is a pretty neat place too. There are some great restaurants, cool shops, and make sure to make a stop at the AT Conservatory. There you can see cool pictures of all the people who have through hiked the AT and learn more about it.

Speaking of the AT, there are great hiking and biking trails right around Harper's Ferry. You can even say you hiked all the way to Virginia from West Virginia. Just don't tell anyone that Harper's Ferry is right on the border.

Nice river front sites, and pool in the campground. Close to historic Harpers Ferry and lots of great hiking.

We stayed at Harpers Ferry KOA for a long weekend. Upon arrival we were told that the campround was going to be at full capacity. Just after puling into  into our site we immediatley noticed puddles that were growing and leak from the adjoining sites water hook up. We went to the office and maintenance responed at first telling us that in order to fix the leak they would have to shut off water and dig up lines in about half of the campground. At the same time we discovered that the cable was not working, and neither was the wifi. Maintenence came back and was able to stop the leak. We were then told that due to the leak , no one would be put on that site. People camping on the other side of us told us that the campground had been aware of the leak because they reported it hours before our arrival as well, and nothing had been done, We opted to stay on that site for remainder of the stay as were were already set up. We then went on an outing only to return to find that a work crew began to work on the water line , moved out gear , and threw cigarette butts around our site as well. On top of that the sewer hook up was also leaking. The actual manager was asked for but never responded to any calls. The sites were also very close together and tight.

The staff was not very knowledgable on the area attractions either. I asked two different employees how to get to the local attractions and neither could tell me.All I was told was that the battlefields were closed, but people could still walk around on foot.  After some exploring we were able to find historic Harpers Ferry about a mile up the road. Harpers Ferry was great. Most of the shops and restaurants were open and great. 

Cell service in the area for both AT&T and Verizon was poor. I do not know if this was due to the terrain or lack of towers. The area of Harpers Ferry was nice, but the campground experience was not.

We used this as our home base for exploring Harpers Ferry and Antietam. After camping a week on the beach, our stop here was a godsend. The sites are very cool and wooded with a lot of privacy. The bathhouse could use a renovation. It seemed kind of dirty and outdated to me. Other than that, I look back at this stop and really want to go back and spend more time here.

Have waited six months into our RV life to start reviews for fair comparisons. We stayed here to meet up with friends in Harpers Ferry. It has been our most expensive site in six months, but suspect that’s par for the course in this area. Prepare for the noise with the overhead zip lining (which is cool to watch), the frequent passing train, and the honking of horns going through the tunnel. All that being said, great view and the guy in charge couldn’t have been any nicer. Brought us free firewood for having to wait less than five minutes to get into our site, which we really didn’t mind. The reason it was delayed was they were creating a new site, and when we expressed the desire to stay longer than our initial reservation he let us take the new site. Yes it’s noisy, but we really enjoyed it. Great areas for dog walking. And can walk into town from the campground.

Great campground for families. Large water park that goes to 3 ft. Playgrounds, dog park, canteen, mini golf, jumping pillow, laser tag, pedal cars, gem mining are just some of the amenities. Very pricey during peak season. We did the camp & store at about $50/night.

Overall great camp ground only thing I noticed is at some of the RV sites the hook ups are in crazy spots some are In the neighboring sites area so you have to drag extensions around them. Also the pool and dog park isn’t on site you have to leave to go to it.

There is a lot on offer here to keep everyone busy. The town of Harpers Ferry is very close and lots of great trails to explore in the nearby area. Casino in Charles Town is also close if that’s your thing. Wifi and cell service was great.

Only thing I didn’t care for is the sites are pretty close together and some of the back-in sites are not very level. We were camping with friends so knew the people in the sites on both sides so didn’t mind the closeness, but otherwise that wouldn’t have been great.

This campground is very convenient to many historic and recreational sites. Some of the sites are very shaded, but like most KOAs the sites are pretty close together. The campground has a nice big pool and lots of activities for the kids. 

The area has river float and whitewater rapids trips on both the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. We were able to walk or ride our bikes to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and access the C+O Canal Tow Path from there. Antietam Battlefield is not far from the park and just across the Virginia border were a ton of vineyards.

Had a relaxing weekend here as our first trip of the season. Weather was pretty good but windy at times. We had 3 RVs in sites 12, 13, and 14 as well as 2 of the deluxe cabins. Our RV sites faced the large parking lot with dump station and registration building. Not an ideal view but it was okay. Site 13 had the best space. Site 12 was good too. Both had a concrete patio, great fire pit, and a round resin picnic table with 4 nice chairs. Site 14 was narrow and no patio. The area in the back had more wooded sites. They are expanding and creating more sites so there was some construction noise but that stopped by 4:30pm and not on the weekend. Campground was at capacity in the full hookup sites and seemed like it would’ve been noisy but it wasn’t. The cabins had a queen bed, 2 bunks, microwave and refrigerator and a small bathroom. That was a tight space but a bathroom none the less. There are bath houses too. Putt putt golf was free and they had a playground and bounce area for kids. There’s a pool that looked nice but not open yet and I saw an indoor basketball court sign. In season they offer a pancake breakfast most days and a small coffee shop. The store was well stocked with supplies, food, wine, and souvenirs and also offered coffee. Locally, you’ll find the town of Harpers Ferry, river rafting/tubing, and the Harpers Ferry brewery that has a gorgeous view and live music that’s just minutes away.

Great place! Lots to do on-site. Tent camped and really had a great time. Harper’s Ferry is a beautiful place to hike, camp and visit. Highly recommended!

This campground has an abundance of things to do. The campground offers adventures like rafting, biking, tubing and zip lining to name a few. If you would like to do some exploring, then you can walk the trail right next to the campground into the historical town of Harper's Ferry (If you’re facing the river then the trail is to the right of the campground with a sign reading that you have entered Harper’s Ferry National Park. The trail is about 1.5 miles one way). From there you can grab a bite, visit the history of Harper's Ferry or continue exploring more hiking trails. There are train tracks behind the campground with a train going through day and night. For me it’s a minor inconvenience and my daughter, who even as a baby, slept through it. Do bring ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. Bathroom and showers located nearby. You’re not allowed to park at the tent sites but most of the tent sites allow you to drop all your camping gear off and then park in a designated area. Between the tent sites being close together and the campground being part of zip lining/rafting courses there’s not a ton of privacy (especially during the weekend). Overall, it's a great adventurous spot!

My family stayed here for two nights during the middle of the week, about half the campground was occupied. Our campsite was right along the water (all spots are along the water). We love walking and having a nice walk right from our campsite is a big bonus. As the covid19 was happened about half a mile down the road was blocked but normally 1.5 mile walk down into Harpers ferry. It was quite other than the train which was 12 feet up a hill across the road from the site. Only had a couple come through the night our 1 yr old slept perfectly through it so it isnt too bothersome,the porta john was serviced while we were there and the showers/bathrooms were 3 private rooms, was pretty clean. We got a discount for staying 2 nights so it was only $29 a night. Dont buy the $25 firewood itll be gone in one night they have wood throughout the campground go forage!
