What to do
Fishing access at Echo Island: Located about 40 minutes from Heber in Coalville, Echo Island RV Resort provides direct water access. "My family and I have been coming here for years. It's fun to bring kayaks and float the river. The people who manage the camp ground have done a wonderful job," notes Jake V.
Trail access from Park City: Park City RV Resort connects to extensive bike paths leading to Old Town Park City. "You have direct access to the bike path that leads directly into Old Town Park City and links you with lots of other trails. It's right off the highway, so access is easy and there's a Whole Foods, restaurants, gas and outlet shopping all less than a mile away," reports kristin S.
Off-roading near Kamas: Knotty Pine RV Resort serves as a gateway to wilderness activities without the congestion. "We love coming here! We are close to hiking and off-reading without the craziness off Mirror Lake Highway. Also, the kids love the pool and the basketball courts," says Brant H.
Swimming options year-round: Most Heber area campgrounds close seasonally, but Mountain Valley RV Resort maintains facilities throughout winter. "This RV park is by far the nicest park I've ever stayed at. I've had the unique experience of living at this RV park for the last 6 months and my opinion of this place has only gotten better over time. The facilities are very new and always clean, nice big private restrooms with showers, two laundry facilities, two hot tubs and two pools," states Zoe M.
What campers like
Adult-only camping sections: Several RV parks near Heber offer designated adult areas. "Now they have opened a new section for adults only, with its own separate 21 and over facilities," notes Cindy H. about Mountain Valley RV Resort. "There's a section that is for adults 21 and older where children are not allowed," confirms Sheila B.
Quality shower facilities: Pony Express RV Resort offers well-maintained bathhouses with private shower options. "The water pressure was high and temp was hot. There was a beautiful fire pit near the pool along with pickle ball and basketball courts," describes Chris G. about Mountain Valley.
Creekside settings: Echo Island provides natural water features alongside camping areas. "Beautiful setting on two small rivers with shade. Full hookups, spacious sites. Nice pool and hot tub. Clear view to south for satellite TV," explains Paul Y.
Family-friendly amenities: Lagoon RV Park & Campground offers direct access to an amusement park with sites for all camping styles. "The Lagoon RV Park has a lot to offer from tent sites to huge pull throughs for the biggest rigs. Right next door to the Lagoon Amusement Park, it is super convenient. Lots of grass and some decent space between sites," explains Sam S.
What you should know
Winter wind conditions: Some campsites experience significant overnight winds. "It was super gusty, windy at night and consistent every night from about 11pm-10am. Maybe it's just seasonal? Make sure your awning is in!" warns Julia M. about camping in the region.
Site spacing variations: Campground density varies widely around Heber. "The RV sites are pretty close together, but there are spaces with shade trees. We went in August 2020 and there were so many bugs," notes Steven M. about Lakeside RV Campground.
Advance booking requirements: Summer weekends fill quickly at most campgrounds. "We booked only about a week ahead of time, so we knew we wouldn't have one of the better plots. The place was emptier on the weekdays and filled-up on the weekends," explains kristin S.
Altitude considerations: Heber Valley sits at over 5,500 feet elevation, affecting some visitors. "Elevation changes on approach roads require attention, particularly for larger vehicles accessing Jordanelle State Park," confirms a visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Check for playground restrictions: Not all play areas welcome unattended children. "The playground is clean, a good sized one, but overrun with unsupervised kids," notes Amy about Pony Express RV Resort.
Look for fishing ponds: Some campgrounds maintain stocked ponds for young anglers. "They had a small pond for kids to fish in, two swimming pools and two hot tubs, very clean and modern facilities, well maintained campsites with fire pit, a cute little shop with firewood, treats, and other necessities and they have dvds and sports equipment you can check out," shares Carlee G. about Echo Island.
Consider off-peak visits: Mid-week stays offer quieter experiences. "We stayed here for a weekend getaway and loved it. Great place close to SLC and park city and for the most part it was surprisingly quiet, though that could be a fluke as it got busier during the day," reports Angie G. about Jordanelle.
Bike-friendly options: Many campgrounds connect to paved trails. "Kids scootered around past sunset. Pool was closed - darn! Booked this location for the pool... would have been up in the mountains more if I knew ahead of time no pool," shares Jennifer H.
Tips from RVers
Water pressure management: Bring regulators for hookups at Jordanelle. "Be careful hooking up your RV to water. Very high pressure," warns Trevor S. about camping at Hailstone Campground.
Avoid holiday weekends: Local campgrounds reach capacity during peak periods. "From Wednesday to Friday at around 2pm, we were about the only ones there. Then the place exploded with campers and by 7pm the place was full," notes Sam S.
Site selection matters: Request specific site types when booking. "The sites are a bit close, but the campground was quiet and clean. There seem to be three levels with the bottom level by the creek, with mostly partial hookups, looking the most attractive," explains Courtney about Park City RV Resort.
Check for seasonal closures: Not all RV parks around Heber operate year-round. "Winter camping options become limited as most parks outside Heber City close seasonally," though some exceptions exist for full-time RVers.
