Best RV Parks & Resorts near West Lake Hills, TX

Several RV parks surround West Lake Hills, Texas, offering varied options for motorhome travelers. Austin Lone Star RV Community features 136 full hookup sites with 50-amp service and operates year-round, providing big-rig friendly spaces with picnic tables and sanitary dump facilities. Oak Forest RV Park, rated 4.5 stars, delivers spacious sites with full hookups including 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections. La Hacienda RV Resort & Cottages near Lake Travis accommodates large motorhomes with level sites and complete hookups. Pecan Grove RV Park, situated on Barton Springs Road, provides a more urban RV camping experience with water, electric, and sewer hookups. "Most spots are level which means you aren't right on top of your neighbors. Lots of shade," noted one reviewer about the spacing at nearby parks.

Seasonal availability remains consistent throughout the year in most West Lake Hills area RV parks, though summer months see higher occupancy rates. Cell service varies by location but generally remains strong enough for remote work needs, with one visitor reporting "good speed" from park WiFi systems. Pet-friendly policies exist at nearly all RV campgrounds, with some featuring dedicated dog parks and pet washing stations. Propane service is available at select locations, including on-site delivery at Austin Lone Star where "you just put your empty tanks behind your rig, they come pick them up and fill for you and just put it on your tab." Most parks require reservations, particularly during peak seasons and Austin events. Dump stations are present at most facilities, though Longhorn RV Resort notably lacks this amenity despite offering full hookup sites.

    Inks Lake State Park Campground

Great getaway in Texas Hill Country - May 2018

Catching up on my reviews…Inks Lake SP is a superb park about 40 minutes from Austin in the Texas Hill Country.  Great lake with a large no wake zone in one area that makes it very family friendly and paddler friendly.  There are sites away from the NWZ that allow you to ski/tube right from your campsite.  Great choice of flat, easy access spots.  Tent-only spots with only water are available as-well.   Decent hiking and easy biking around the park is available.  The area around Devil's Hole is great for floating about and jumping from the rocks.  Just wish that folks would clean up after themselves better.  Great camp store with lots of products.  Lake was lowered in 2019 to update the docks and boat ramps (very nice now), lake is back to normal seasonal levels.  ILSP is close to Austin, so it stays busy during the season, so reserve well ahead of time.  No Wifi at the campsites, but decent mobile reception (ATT).  30/50 amp and water at most sites.  Fire ring and table on concrete pads at all sites.  Tables are not covered, however.  I've been told that there is Wifi available at the camp store, but I cannot personally verify that.

    Cedar Breaks Park

    Beautiful big sites

The sites are large which means you aren't right on top of your neighbors. Lots of shade. Each site has its own shelter with picnic table, grill and fire pit. Electric and water but no sewer. The sites along the outside of the loop have lake views and are level. The sites along the inside are scary unlevel! Some of the big rigs were backed in and jacked up 4 feet or so in front. Saw a lady break her ankle stepping out of her camper. Be prepared to level your camper! I suggest odd numbers 19-35 and even numbers 36-42 as the most level sites with the best lake views.

The park has hiking trails, boating and swimming access, but none of these are accessed right at the camp area.

Restrooms are very basic with no hot water. They were clean but a little creepy for showers. I used the toilets there during the day and my camper shower and toilet at night.

    Jellystone Park™ Austin North

    Dream campground

Amazing resort. Great monthly rate. They go above and beyond with their amenities providing an indoor play room, full kitchen, business center, etc. Very family friendly resort with plenty of activities planned. Lots of full time families staying here long term which makes for a fun time. The one downside was that we didn’t get the sites that we had put a deposit down for. There seems to be a lot of turnover in the office so when we checked in it wasn’t the same lady who had helped us pick out our sites and reserve them. We travel with my parents and always try to stay next to them but they were unwilling to accommodate that even though they originally told us they would. All in all I do recommend this park for the amazing ambiance and amenities.

Hill Country RV Resort & Cottage Rentals

Nice Park with little room between sites

The park it’s self is nice and clean.  Staff for the most part is friendly and nice.  The pool is a hopping place over summer break and on the weekends when it’s warm.  RV sites are tight in the daily/weekly sites and parking your 40+ foot rig and tow vehicle in the spot are probably not happening.  They do have over flow parking and depending on your site it could be a good walk.

They are pet friendly and have several dog parks and potty areas through out the park.  The laundry room is like no other I’ve ever been too.  All machines operate via debit/credit cards, no more quarters!!

Over all we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this park for monthly stays or in one of their top tier sites for daily/weekly stays.

    Sunset RV Park

    Peace in Hill Country

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 5 Overall grounds: 4 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 4 Local Attraction Proximity: 4 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 5 Amenities: 4 Customer Service: 5 Cleanliness: 4

A really lovely spot in Dripping Springs, Sunset RV Park is a small park in Hill Country outside Austin (this is not the one near Lake Travis). It’s clear that this is a destination spot for snowbirds to the area as most everyone was set-up for a long-term stay and we saw very few folks come and go during our one-week stay. The park is very quiet with close attention paid to COVID precautions (this is the first park we encountered that was 100% contact free check in).

The park is built somewhat into a hill, so some of the turns are a little tricky and our spot was a bit uneven. The space itself was a very wide asphalt driveway with a picnic table and metal fire ring below a stone wall, perhaps a bit close to our neighbors as I wasn’t totally certain it was definitely ours to use.

The amenities are pretty basic- clean laundry and bathrooms and a good enough wifi signal to allow us to use the internet easily. There’s also propane available on site. I enjoyed the layout of the grounds and each site was afforded some privacy thanks to the set-up and tiered spaces. The weekly rate of $300 was very reasonable.

Excellent access to Hamilton Pool (make reservations!), Reimers Ranch and Westcave Discovery Center. Also about 30 minutes to most of Austin including SoCo, McKinney Falls SP and 6th Street.

Reservations were made by phone with a very friendly woman and, as I mentioned, check in was contactless, so we really didn’t encounter anyone else aside from a friendly wave from folks maintaining the grounds in golf carts. The place is a nice find outside Austin and very close by to family for us, so we’re happy to have found it and will return!

    Summit Vacation Resort

    Texas Camping at its finest

We loved the quiet and peace of this RV Resort nestled in Texas Hill Country.

The Park: they have a large pool area with cafe and snacks. The property is large and spaces are spread out through out the park. The big draw is the Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake, and the woods and hills.

They have hot shoes, bath houses, laundry.

The sites: Gravel and mostly level, very few sites were unlevel. You’re surrounded by hills so it is nice and quiet. They are full hook up sites. Each site had a fire ring and picnic table. Small deer herds would move through the park each evening. Many of the campers feed them corn and they know the sounds and come running out of the hills.

The campground is near grocery and hardware stores. Within an hour are several bigger towns with more stores.

Cellular: T-Mobile was decent but not great. They do have Campground WiFi that worked faster.

Canyon Lake Military - Randolph AFB

We love it here. Not for everyone.

We started with day passes, then graduated to renting out the loft cabins, then tried tent camping, and eventually and recently parked our travel trailer in the reservable RV spaces. All in the same vicinity. Made great memories at each stay.

Pro’s: Best rate in town for military (active, retired, $ disabled). Water is beautiful. Fishing can be fantastic. Lots of water activities available for rent or bring your own. Pet friendly, Great for families, most people are very respectful and wonderful to talk to. Good food and stores nearby. Lots of wildlife. Quiet. Close to town and short drive from San Antonio.

Cons: Hard to get ahold of staff to make reservations. Market is extremely expensive and staff isn’t very friendly. Lost and lots of fire ants.

We recommend it to all of our friends and family and bring them often. We love staying in the loft cabins. Some are pet friendly. We have stayed in the mobile homes on the other side of the lake once but that was not a great experience as our things were stolen off our table and covered patio (on Veterans Day) and they were only left unattended for 15 min or less. The mobile home wasn’t very nice but functional at least.

La Hacienda RV Resort & Cottages

La Hacienda RV Resort and Cottages + Lots of Amenities

I'm always on the lookout for new campgrounds nearby my town. It's nice to have a few places to escape to for a quick day or weekend trip. I searched on thedyrt.com for campgrounds nearby and noticed a group of listings near Lake Travis in an area called Hudson Bend. I decided to check them out.

If you are looking for a short, mid or long-term place to RV camp or cabin camp near Lake Travis on the Hudson Bend penisula this might be your best option.

The facilities are modern, clean and offer many amenities. And the people that I talked to that were staying at the park seemed to be friendly and happy with their choice of facilities.

At the entrance there is an office that is open during typical business hours 9-5. Next to the office there was a small pool and courtyard. And next to the pool was a group meeting room.

The park offered a variety of options from short, mid and long-term stays. One gentleman that I met and talked to said that he was a snowbird and had stayed at the park for the past four years every summer. This appeared to be the norm.

There are RV sites that offer back-in parking and drive-through parking. There are also little multi-color cabins that can be rented. The grounds looked like they were well taken care of. There was some open green space and what appeared to be a fenced dog walking area. Each of the RV sites offered a picnic table and electric and water hookups.

The only downside to this RV park was that it was not located directly on the shore of the lake. To access the lake one must drive down the road and visit the marina. Also, the park is rather large, so some might feel there is a lack of privacy. I wouldn't say that this park has great access to nature, it is more of a modern RV park.

Overall, if you're a mid to long term vacationer you might really enjoy this site. If you're looking for access to nature, you might look elsewhere.

Guide to West Lake Hills

West Lake Hills RV camping features diverse campgrounds within 25 miles of downtown Austin. Located in the Texas Hill Country at elevations ranging from 500-800 feet, the area maintains year-round camping opportunities with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F. The surrounding limestone terrain creates unique camping environments where RVers can enjoy both developed and semi-natural settings.

What to do

Explore Lady Bird Lake trails: At Oak Forest RV Park, guests have quick access to Austin's waterways. "Biked around Lady Bird Lake- nice 10 mile path that goes by city. Took great tour of where Austin City limits is filmed and tour of capital. Highly recommend," notes Carol J.

Enjoy onsite recreation: Family activities don't require leaving your campground. "The pool was perfect and the bathrooms were amazing. Super clean and spacious shower areas. Awesome recreation area, laundry, gym, and gift shop that has a small pizza place there so you can order food on site," explains Marie D. from Longhorn RV Resort.

Tubing on Colorado River: River Forest Haven provides water recreation without the lake crowds. "The tubing is great for people with children who don't necessarily want to go tubing two to four hours... Very short route but water safety should be practiced as it is very deep in some areas," advises Guillermo L.

What campers like

Proximity to Austin attractions: Pecan Grove RV Park stands out for urban accessibility. "We really enjoyed this place for the people and the location. The facilities weren't in the best of shape, but that didn't bother us– we were right near so many things to check out. We went on bike rides and runs right from the site," shares Bounding Around.

Spacious camping sites: Many West Lake Hills area RV parks offer generous site spacing. "Our spot, #97, was right on the water and it was an amazing spot to watch the sunset! The sites are nice distance from one another and nice size. Fit our 43' Motorhome with dolly," notes Roxanna L.

Community atmosphere: Longer-term RV parks around West Lake Hills foster social connections. "Every night they have something going on and they send a text each day with activities. They text you when you get a shipment," mentions Roxanna L. about Austin Lone Star RV Community.

What you should know

Seasonal weather considerations: Texas heat impacts camping experience. "We were here close to a month and had 2 really nice warm sunny days and the rest were gloomy, foggy at night and windy," reports Roxanna L.

Road noise levels: Highway proximity affects some RV parks near West Lake Hills. "It's located along the freeway, so there is some road noise. However, at night it was pretty quiet," explains Marnie G.

Space limitations: Several La Hacienda RV Resort & Cottages visitors note site spacing concerns. "The RV sites were very tightly grouped together, the grounds looked a little untidy, there did not appear to be many amenities," Troy W. comments.

Gate access systems: Many RV parks implement security systems. "Very nice campground, very secure, codes used to enter gate, pool, showers/restrooms & 24hour laundry room," explains Jeannine D.

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly facilities: Pet accommodations vary widely between parks. "The dog park is big enough to throw a frisbee and it has artificial turf. Very clean," Shelly W. notes at Austin Lone Star RV Community.

Child-oriented amenities: Look for parks with dedicated kid spaces. "We had a pull through site close to pool and bathhouse. Small fitness center which I used. Laundry room clean. Biked around Lady Bird Lake- nice 10 mile path that goes by city," shares Carol J.

Security considerations: River Forest Haven provides more rustic experiences. "Super cool to get tucked into the woods. Some of the spots are secluded and others aren't. Down side is it isn't assigned sites, so if your self contained like my van we went out for the day and came back to someone set up in our spot," cautions Ryan G.

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Terrain varies across West Lake Hills area RV parks. "The park is built somewhat into a hill, so some of the turns are a little tricky and our spot was a bit uneven," reports kristin S.

Reservation timing: Advance planning is essential. "This is the third campground we've stayed at, and it's conveniently located just 15 minutes from the city, with grocery stores and other essential shops nearby," explains Tijana & Andrew C.

Propane availability: Unlike some facilities, certain campgrounds offer special services. "The septic connection at my spot is at the same height as my RV connection - no matter what I do, I can't get it to have a slope. Most sites are better, but the connection at all of them is raised up about 6"," notes Lightful Mind R. from Longhorn RV Resort.
