    Amarillo RV Resort

    Clean and friendly

Very clean. Perfect for big rigs. Lots of class A's here with tows. Wide spots. Excellent cell and wifi service. There is noise from the road. You can see it from the campground. However, it's not too bad. Easy pull through spots.. They have a nice dog run and huge grassy area for dogs. Very pet friendly. However, all the dog grass is on the west side of the park. So if you are on the east side, it can be a bit of a treck taking Fido to go potty at 11:00 at night. There is no grass at the campsite. However, I will take a bit of a track to nice grass over a short walk to a weeded bushy area any day.

Mesquite Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Nicest Park in Years

Traveling from KY to AZ. 36 foot fifth wheel, tow vehicle and second car. Stopped here for 2 nights. Site 85. 50/30/20A and water. No sewer, but 2 dump stations in park. After backing in (very easy) realized it can be used as a pull through entering in front of site 87. Very roomy site. Covered picnic table and fire ring/grill. Didn't use restrooms or showers, but they were clean. Most of site is red dirt, but parked on asphalt and picnic table is on concrete pad. Close to level. If you've never been here, the Mesquite camp area is like 5 or 6 miles past the park entrance gate. Steep grade into canyon and curvy road. Now for the experience. Although some would complain about some things in this park we were able to overlook any problems (we had none anyway) because it was so beautiful. This is the nicest park we've been to in several years. Great scenery, trails everywhere and wildlife. We saw mule deer, roadrunners, rabbits, turkey, lizards, huge centipede, longhorns and lots of birds. Sat at bird viewing station behind the tradepost for a while and saw many different birds. It was hot during the day and cool at night in September. Would definitely stay again. If ess are listed they will include fees for 3 vehicles.

    Amarillo KOA

Cute KOA - access to all of Amarillo

We were in site #12. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through. We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.

The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors very close.

The lot does not have a concrete patio or fire ring but has a picnic table.

It is an easy access to the campground from highway -(approximately 1 mile from highway).

There is free WiFi. They do not offer Cable TV but there are many channels.

They do not sell wood since fire burning is not permitted (only charcoal).

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster (located through out the park).

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a heated Swimming pool.

There is a Playground. There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, or volleyball courts.

They have a great general store. They sell limited food & alcohol as well.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes. There is not really anywhere to ride bikes outside of campground.

They have cabins for rent and tent areas.

They have 2 shower houses. The shower house has the typical stalls. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. There are approximately 6 washers and 3 large dryers. It is approximately $2 to wash and approximately $2 to dry a load.

They have two side-by-side fenced in dog parks.

There were no trails to hike in the campground.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon state park (a must do - also stop at the Sad Monkey Mercantile for wine, beer, pizza) and Route 66 Motor Speedway (quite entertaining). The Texan Steak Ranch was delicious and a fun experience (reservations can be made on OpenTable). Also visit the Paramount Social Club (a speakeasy). This is located in the basement of the Barfield Hotel (pull the lever on the cigarette machine to access the secret door).

    Amarillo RV Resort

    Great stop through!

It appears every site here is a pull-through. Very level sites with full hookups. Apparently there is a game room, laundry, pool, dog run, gym, store, and spa but we were here during the coronavirus shutdown so nothing was open. The grounds are well kept and very clean. I will note (although I’m not sure if it’s typical here or not), but it’s so windy here we weren’t even able to go outside.

    Big Texan RV Ranch

    Overnight Stay

Pulled in without a reservation for a one night stay. All pull-thru lots were booked. They allowed us to stay in a back-in monthly rental. Site has mostly long term RVs. Lots are gravel but really level. Have ok cell service. They offer wifi but it is not the best. Famous Big Texan does deliver food to your RV. Sites have full hookups plus cable. Would only stay here again if I was driving late and needed a place just to rest.

Sagebrush Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Sagebrush Loop Recommended

I love this state park! I've been here several times and it never disappoints. It has great hiking trails, mountain biking, a convenient, well stocked "camp" store that also sells good burgers and ice cream.

First time I've camped in the Sagebrush Loop. Site 126 had a covered picnic table with metal supports. I was able to hang my hammock and have shade, because there is little to be had in this section. Mostly level site with 30 amp, water and a fire ring/grill.

More firsts: saw bald eagles mating and a Texas horned toad. Lot's of animal sightings - lizards, dung beetles, turkeys, mule deer and the resident longhorns of course.

    Beautiful place!

Juniper Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Our Go To State Park

Palo Duro Canyon is undeniably beautiful. Outside of any reviews of camping the canyon itself is a wonder.

We've stayed in a few of the RV loops, but our favorite is Juniper. Its the furthest inside the park but has had recent renovations to the sites and bathroom facilities. Sites are reasonably spaced apart with water and electric hook ups. A few pull through spots are available in Juniper. Sites are level with fresh gravel and a covered concrete pad with picnic table.

You can access several trails from Juniper. The mountain biking in Palo Duro is fantastic. As well as the hiking. Summers are very hot, but Spring and Fall are great times to visit.

The gate is usually busy when you check in but the rangers always do a great job.

Guide to Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

Lake Meredith National Recreation Area sits at an elevation of 2,875 feet in the Texas Panhandle where summer temperatures often exceed 100°F. During peak season from May to September, overnight temperatures can drop to 60°F even when daytime highs reach the upper 90s.

What to Do

Playground access for kids: Texhoma Park Campground in Dumas offers a generous playground area with shade. "The playground seemed generous in size for families & very shady. The water spigot is easily accessed," notes Michele A. This free overnight facility provides a welcome stop for families traveling through the area.

Hiking the Juniper Trail: Juniper Campground at Palo Duro Canyon State Park connects directly to the Juniper Trail with cave access. "Great access to the Juniper trail with the cave— definitely worth checking out," mentions Olivia R., though she warns of "relentless biting flies" during summer visits.

Animal viewing opportunities: Route 66 RV Ranch includes a small petting zoo along with its dog park. "Also has a small petting zoo, dog park. Discounts for military, first responders, active or retired," notes Tina B. The campground is conveniently located off I-40 for easy access during travels.

What You Should Know

Weather and terrain challenges: The Texas Panhandle experiences extreme heat and persistent winds. "It's so windy here we weren't even able to go outside," mentions Jil S. during her stay at Amarillo RV Resort. Summer visitors should plan for daytime temperatures above 100°F.

Security measures in place: Amarillo RV Resort maintains surveillance systems throughout the property. "The grounds are well kept and very clean... it's so windy here we weren't even able to go outside," notes Jil S. The security measures are standard at most rv campgrounds around Lake Meredith.
