The Gathering Place RV Park, located approximately 30 miles southwest of Pampa, features 13 pull-through RV pads with both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. Water and electric and level so we didn't have to unhook."

    Amarillo KOA

Cute KOA - access to all of Amarillo

We were in site #12. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through. We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.

The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors very close.

The lot does not have a concrete patio or fire ring but has a picnic table.

It is an easy access to the campground from highway -(approximately 1 mile from highway).

There is free WiFi. They do not offer Cable TV but there are many channels.

They do not sell wood since fire burning is not permitted (only charcoal).

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster (located through out the park).

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a heated Swimming pool.

There is a Playground. There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, or volleyball courts.

They have a great general store. They sell limited food & alcohol as well.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes. There is not really anywhere to ride bikes outside of campground.

They have cabins for rent and tent areas.

They have 2 shower houses. The shower house has the typical stalls. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. There are approximately 6 washers and 3 large dryers. It is approximately $2 to wash and approximately $2 to dry a load.

They have two side-by-side fenced in dog parks.

There were no trails to hike in the campground.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon state park (a must do - also stop at the Sad Monkey Mercantile for wine, beer, pizza) and Route 66 Motor Speedway (quite entertaining). The Texan Steak Ranch was delicious and a fun experience (reservations can be made on OpenTable). Also visit the Paramount Social Club (a speakeasy). This is located in the basement of the Barfield Hotel (pull the lever on the cigarette machine to access the secret door).

    Texas Route 66 RV Park

    Right on Old Route 66

Located on one of the last remaining stretched of Route 66 in Texas. This is a nice campground just outside of Shamrock TX, on the panhandle, about 10 miles from the Oklahoma line. They have Full Hookups, with 30 & 50 amps, Long Pull-Thru sites, Free Wi-Fi, a Dog Run, Laundry, Play Area. There is also a Souvenir Shop with Route 66 memorabilia. There was only one shower when we were there, so be sure to lock the door! It does look like they are adding more. There was not much shade, but in late May it was still pleasant, and there is a steady breeze, which felt good after 2 days of rain. The sites are also very close together. Our neighbors were practically sitting in our site when we arrived. One interesting item is the storm shelter. I guess in tornado county it could be helpful. They also gave a menagerie of farm animals: goats, sheep, chickens, cows and a donkey.

    Texas Route 66 RV Park

    Friendly Owner, Safe, Great Laundry

We stayed here for two weeks while traveling for renewable energy work in the area. They had very affordable daily, weekly, and monthly rates. They have a lot of people who come and stay a day or too while they travel, your neighbors are always changing. They have a very cute store with basics including food if needed. Maytag washers and commercial dryer available with dollars to coin machine. Hookups are great, easy to connect and setup user friendly. They have farm animals onsite to visit, great fir the kids! Pet friendly. Trash cans all over the site along with two dumpsters. Tornado shelters on site! Only 5minutes away from the town of Shamrock, TX which has multiple fuel options, grocery market and ace hardware. They have some cute shops too. Multiple propane options within an hour of each direction.

All in all very impressed with the owners and site and our stay was great. Definitely will stay here again if we are back in the area!

    Aok Camper Park

    Dumpy

Lot is okay, long pull through and some trees. Looks very poor. Can hear hwy traffic and thought a plane was going to crash in to us it was so low. The office looks like it is an OLD, run down KOA building, but it is actually behind the Title Max office. There used to be a pool which is filled with weeds now. Looks like most of the campers are long term.

    Texas Route 66 RV Park

A good stopover for the night

Nice owners/managers, place is a little dated, but relatively clean. Highway noise is a constant. Has storm shelters available when needed. Gravel pull-throughs, mostly level.

Sanford-Yake Campground — Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

    The Best Stumble-Upon Spot!

This place is free and has some sites with both water/hookups and some dry camping. The views are so sick and I had no idea Texas had spots to offer like this (Midwesterner here lol). Fun to watch the deer down by the shore. Cool lil trails and loved the sunrises here, I parked right on the edge. I was at a site with hookups for a few hours (self converted camper van but sometimes I just hook up to the 20a/put my batteries on trickle charger). Some lady w a fifth wheel came up and said I was in her spot tho I’m pretty sure she duped me bc it’s free/aren’t reservations lol. Didn’t put up a fight. No problem camping dry with a better view!! Will be back when traversing TX again.

    Aok Camper Park

Nice fairly level sites with hookups.

Is a fairly calm little camping area or RV park actually and it has water hookups both 50 30 and looks like 20 amp power hookups and sewer hookups. There are no other amenities. There is a vending machine but that's just I think for soda. Fairly quiet at night. Not a whole lot of noise except for that of the freeway.

Visit Route 66 sites: Several campgrounds position travelers near historic Route 66 segments. One camper reports: "Located on one of the last remaining stretched of Route 66 in Texas. This is a nice campground just outside of Shamrock TX, on the panhandle, about 10 miles from the Oklahoma line."

What campers like

Honor system payment: Watson RV Park simplifies check-in with self-service payment. As one visitor explains: "It's an honor system $20/night. Water and electric and level so we didn't have to unhook."

Friendly ownership: Personal attention from proprietors receives consistent positive mentions. A visitor to Longhorn RV Park shared: "When we arrived we were greeted by the owner, a very nice lady, who stated to pick any site and she collected our money."

Easy highway access: Many parks offer convenient access from major roads. One reviewer notes: "This campground is right off I40 about an hour East of Amarillo. Plenty of space, full hook ups, friendly owners."

Security features: Some properties provide additional security measures. A reviewer mentioned: "Surveillance cameras 24/7. Full hook ups. Mostly for big RV to live there."

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Several parks sit close to major transportation corridors. A traveler at Watson RV Park observed: "Right next to the highway and train that runs through the night so if that bothers you I wouldn't suggest this spot."

Site spacing varies significantly: Some parks feature tight spacing between units. A visitor to City of Pampa Recreation Park noted: "Some of the sites look like they pretty much are on top of one another and there isn't really a lot of room to spread out."

Limited site amenities: Many parks provide basic utilities without additional features. One camper described: "Picnic tables and fire rings are absent from the individual sites and it seemed more of a place just to stop than a place to really enjoy."

Weather shelter access: Texas Route 66 RV Park maintains tornado shelters. A reviewer highlighted: "Storm shelters on site! Only 5 minutes away from the town of Shamrock, TX which has multiple fuel options, grocery market and ace hardware."

Tips for camping with families

Plan for shade needs: Many camping areas lack natural coverage. A visitor observed: "There is little to no shade and the electrical connection boxes look pretty wonky."

Schedule around local events: Sporting events can impact campground atmosphere. One reviewer suggested: "Get a discount for camping on a weekday when it is only $15 a night as opposed to $20."

Utilize recreation areas: Comanche Campground provides access to various amenities beyond camping sites. However, a visitor cautioned: "Very basic RV park. It has all the amenities you need but it's just that."

Consider off-peak timing: Weekdays typically offer less crowded conditions. A recent visitor noted: "Pulled in here on my way to NM and after seeing it on the Dyrt, I decided to give it a try. For the money this is not a bad deal at all."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger units: Some areas accommodate various RV lengths. A reviewer at City of Pampa Recreation Park advised: "If you are in a larger rig, you will want to use one of the sites closer to the stadium that area a bit longer."

Leveling requirements: Several parks feature reasonably level sites. One camper noted: "We picked site 11. All 12 sites here are pull throughs with FHUs with 15, 30, and 50 AMP on both sides so you can pull in either direction."

Connectivity options: Cell service strength varies between parks. A visitor to Desert Dove Hacienda RV Park commented positively about the accommodations, though connectivity details remain limited.

Dump station availability: Not all facilities offer on-site dumping. Texas Route 66 RV Park received this observation: "They have Full Hookups, with 30 & 50 amps, Long Pull-Thru sites, Free Wi-Fi, a Dog Run, Laundry, Play Area."
