CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Lake McClellan Campground offers water and electric hookups with big-rig friendly sites and a dump station at the entrance. Texas Route 66 RV Park in Shamrock features full hookup pull-through sites with electric, water, and sewer connections. "Excellent customer service, full hookups, long pull through sites, laundry, horse shoes, dog park, easy to get to, beautiful scenery, easy to navigate," noted one visitor about the Route 66 park. Overnight rates typically range from $15-43 per night, with weekday discounts available at some parks. While Texas Route 66 RV Park offers on-site facilities like laundry and a store with basic supplies, other parks operate on an honor system with payment boxes and minimal staffing. Mesquite Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Nicest Park in Years

Traveling from KY to AZ. 36 foot fifth wheel, tow vehicle and second car. Stopped here for 2 nights. Site 85. 50/30/20A and water. No sewer, but 2 dump stations in park. After backing in (very easy) realized it can be used as a pull through entering in front of site 87. Very roomy site. Covered picnic table and fire ring/grill. Didn't use restrooms or showers, but they were clean. Most of site is red dirt, but parked on asphalt and picnic table is on concrete pad. Close to level. If you've never been here, the Mesquite camp area is like 5 or 6 miles past the park entrance gate. Steep grade into canyon and curvy road. Now for the experience. Although some would complain about some things in this park we were able to overlook any problems (we had none anyway) because it was so beautiful. This is the nicest park we've been to in several years. Great scenery, trails everywhere and wildlife. We saw mule deer, roadrunners, rabbits, turkey, lizards, huge centipede, longhorns and lots of birds. Sat at bird viewing station behind the tradepost for a while and saw many different birds. It was hot during the day and cool at night in September. Would definitely stay again. If ess are listed they will include fees for 3 vehicles.

    Amarillo KOA

Cute KOA - access to all of Amarillo

We were in site #12. We had Full hook- up with a gravel pull-through. We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.

The site was easy to level.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors very close.

The lot does not have a concrete patio or fire ring but has a picnic table.

It is an easy access to the campground from highway -(approximately 1 mile from highway).

There is free WiFi. They do not offer Cable TV but there are many channels.

They do not sell wood since fire burning is not permitted (only charcoal).

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster (located through out the park).

You are allowed to ride personal golf carts. They do not provide golf cart rentals. There is really not a need to have a Golf cart because it is a smaller campground.

They do have a heated Swimming pool.

There is a Playground. There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, or volleyball courts.

They have a great general store. They sell limited food & alcohol as well.

The streets are gravel so not great for riding bikes. There is not really anywhere to ride bikes outside of campground.

They have cabins for rent and tent areas.

They have 2 shower houses. The shower house has the typical stalls. These are kept very clean.

There is a laundry facility. It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. There are approximately 6 washers and 3 large dryers. It is approximately $2 to wash and approximately $2 to dry a load.

They have two side-by-side fenced in dog parks.

There were no trails to hike in the campground.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon state park (a must do - also stop at the Sad Monkey Mercantile for wine, beer, pizza) and Route 66 Motor Speedway (quite entertaining). The Texan Steak Ranch was delicious and a fun experience (reservations can be made on OpenTable). Also visit the Paramount Social Club (a speakeasy). This is located in the basement of the Barfield Hotel (pull the lever on the cigarette machine to access the secret door).

    Texas Route 66 RV Park

    Right on Old Route 66

Located on one of the last remaining stretched of Route 66 in Texas. This is a nice campground just outside of Shamrock TX, on the panhandle, about 10 miles from the Oklahoma line. They have Full Hookups, with 30 & 50 amps, Long Pull-Thru sites, Free Wi-Fi, a Dog Run, Laundry, Play Area. There is also a Souvenir Shop with Route 66 memorabilia. There was only one shower when we were there, so be sure to lock the door! It does look like they are adding more. There was not much shade, but in late May it was still pleasant, and there is a steady breeze, which felt good after 2 days of rain. The sites are also very close together. Our neighbors were practically sitting in our site when we arrived. One interesting item is the storm shelter. I guess in tornado county it could be helpful. They also gave a menagerie of farm animals: goats, sheep, chickens, cows and a donkey.

Sagebrush Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Sagebrush Loop Recommended

I love this state park! I've been here several times and it never disappoints. It has great hiking trails, mountain biking, a convenient, well stocked "camp" store that also sells good burgers and ice cream.

First time I've camped in the Sagebrush Loop. Site 126 had a covered picnic table with metal supports. I was able to hang my hammock and have shade, because there is little to be had in this section. Mostly level site with 30 amp, water and a fire ring/grill.

More firsts: saw bald eagles mating and a Texas horned toad. Lot's of animal sightings - lizards, dung beetles, turkeys, mule deer and the resident longhorns of course.

    Beautiful place!

Juniper Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Our Go To State Park

Palo Duro Canyon is undeniably beautiful. Outside of any reviews of camping the canyon itself is a wonder.

We've stayed in a few of the RV loops, but our favorite is Juniper. Its the furthest inside the park but has had recent renovations to the sites and bathroom facilities. Sites are reasonably spaced apart with water and electric hook ups. A few pull through spots are available in Juniper. Sites are level with fresh gravel and a covered concrete pad with picnic table.

You can access several trails from Juniper. The mountain biking in Palo Duro is fantastic. As well as the hiking. Summers are very hot, but Spring and Fall are great times to visit.

The gate is usually busy when you check in but the rangers always do a great job.

    Texas Route 66 RV Park

    Friendly Owner, Safe, Great Laundry

We stayed here for two weeks while traveling for renewable energy work in the area. They had very affordable daily, weekly, and monthly rates. They have a lot of people who come and stay a day or too while they travel, your neighbors are always changing. They have a very cute store with basics including food if needed. Maytag washers and commercial dryer available with dollars to coin machine. Hookups are great, easy to connect and setup user friendly. They have farm animals onsite to visit, great fir the kids! Pet friendly. Trash cans all over the site along with two dumpsters. Tornado shelters on site! Only 5minutes away from the town of Shamrock, TX which has multiple fuel options, grocery market and ace hardware. They have some cute shops too. Multiple propane options within an hour of each direction.

All in all very impressed with the owners and site and our stay was great. Definitely will stay here again if we are back in the area!

Hackberry Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Hackberry campground review

The scenery is spectacular top notch amazing. Must be seen to be believed. It was cold (being December) and the stars shone so clear and bright.

The sites in Hackberry are difficult for newer people to back into, with narrow roads and angled sites with trees and bollards aplenty. Major frustration here. There were some pull through sites but all were marked reserved— however maybe only one was actually even occupied. Perhaps COVID related but perhaps not.

There were tent campers in many of the sites. Deer were eating their food. Several tent campers had large dogs that were roaming loose.

Bathrooms smell due to being some sort of unusual plumbing (no sewer) but are recently remodeled (no mirrors installed yet). We winter camped and they were very warm and with hot clean showers.

Steep grade of 10% to enter the park itself. No full hookups.

Guide to McClellan Creek National Grassland

McClellan Creek National Grassland offers RV and tent camping opportunities in the Texas Panhandle region. The grassland covers approximately 1,449 acres of public land with elevations ranging from 2,900 to 3,100 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 90-100°F while winters can drop to below freezing, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons.

What to do

Hiking trails: At Palo Duro Canyon State Park, approximately 90 miles from McClellan Creek, visitors can access numerous trails. "Great area to hike, camp, and mountain bike. It does get hot in summer months," notes one visitor about the Juniper Campground.

ATV riding: Lake McClellan Campground provides designated ATV trails for off-road enthusiasts. "This area has ATV trails, so I am guessing it might get busy on the weekends," reports a visitor about the Lake McClellan Campground.

Wildlife viewing: The grasslands support diverse wildlife including turkeys, which campers often spot near their sites. "The turkeys were walking around the campsites. Our camp host rode around talking to all campers on his jeep," shares one camper about their experience at Palo Duro Canyon.

What campers like

Honor system camping: Many campgrounds operate with minimal supervision. "We arrived and had no problems finding this nice little RV park for an overnighter. We had called prior to arrival for reservations and were told there would be no problem getting a site," explains a camper about Longhorn RV Park.

Farm animals: Some RV parks feature animal attractions. "Cute overnight stop with some farm animals on the property. Very helpful owners. Lead us right to our site," shares one visitor about Texas Route 66 RV Park.

Well-designed sites: Campers appreciate thoughtful campsite layouts. "All 12 sites here are pull throughs with FHUs with 15, 30, and 50 AMP on both sides so you can pull in either direction. There is also a picnic table and cool little bbq," reports a visitor at Longhorn RV Park.

What you should know

Weather considerations: The Texas Panhandle experiences extreme temperature variations and seasonal changes. "It was about 105 when I got in at 5pm in July (to be expected), but cooled down some overnight with a bit of rain. Biggest downside besides the heat was the relentless biting flies," warns a camper at Juniper Campground.

Highway noise: Many RV parks near McClellan Creek National Grassland are situated close to Interstate 40. "Right next to the highway and train that runs through the night so if that bothers you I wouldn't suggest this spot," advises a camper about Watson RV Park.

Bathroom conditions: Bathroom maintenance varies between campgrounds. "Camping areas were very nice, even the hook up areas, was very disappointed in the port a potties and the other bathrooms with showers, they were filthy and trash was full," reports a visitor to Lake McClellan Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Animal attractions: Children enjoy the farm animals at some RV parks. "They have farm animals onsite to visit, great for the kids! Pet friendly," recommends a visitor about Texas Route 66 RV Park.

Safety features: Some campgrounds offer storm shelters for protection during severe weather. "One interesting item is the storm shelter. I guess in tornado county it could be helpful," notes a camper about Texas Route 66 RV Park.

Recreation opportunities: Parks may include play areas for children. "There is a large field to walk your pups. Great views and sunsets," mentions a camper about Longhorn RV Park, highlighting the open space available for family activities.

Tips from RVers

Pull-through accessibility: Many rv campgrounds near McClellan Creek National Grassland feature convenient pull-through sites. "We needed a spot to rest for the night and stopped here. It's an honor system $20/night. Water and electric and level so we didn't have to unhook," shares a visitor at Watson RV Park.

Extended stay options: Some parks accommodate longer visits with weekly or monthly rates. "We stayed here for two weeks while traveling for renewable energy work in the area. They had very affordable daily, weekly, and monthly rates," mentions a camper about Texas Route 66 RV Park.

Local services: Nearby towns provide essential services for RVers. "Only 5 minutes away from the town of Shamrock, TX which has multiple fuel options, grocery market and ace hardware.
