Hiking enthusiasts find direct trail access from Juniper Campground, with the Juniper Trail leading to a cave formation that draws visitors despite summer temperatures reaching 105 degrees. Located five miles into Palo Duro Canyon past the park entrance, this campground sits among scattered junipers and deciduous trees with canyon walls visible on both sides.
The campground accommodates large RVs with pull-through sites featuring water and electric hookups on level, freshly graveled pads. Each site includes a covered concrete area with picnic table and campfire ring. Jill C. notes "the shower house is one of the cleanest I've seen! Hot water, heated, and plenty of room in separate stalls." Sites 97, 99, 100, 101, 103, 105, 107, 109, and 113 offer the most privacy according to regular visitors.
Mountain biking trails wind through the canyon system, while the famous Lighthouse Trail provides an easy trek when accessed early morning before crowds arrive. Wildlife sightings include roadrunners, eagles, wild boar, armadillos, and white-tailed deer. Summer heat can be intense, with temperatures staying in the 90s at 10 pm, though spring and fall offer more comfortable conditions. Biting flies can be problematic during warmer months.
Access requires navigating the park's entrance gate, which tends to be busy during check-in hours. Roger W. reports "most inner loop sites aren't very private" compared to the perimeter sites. Cell service runs limited with AT&T showing one bar. The campground sits about 15 miles from campgrounds around Canyon for those needing supply runs.
Late check-in packets wait at the entrance gate, and reservations help secure preferred sites during busy periods.
