Mesquite Campground sits at the deepest point of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, accessed via a steep 10% grade that winds five miles from the park entrance. The descent into America's second-largest canyon brings RV drivers through dramatic red rock formations before reaching this 96-site campground with water and electric hookups. Sites range from $26-50 per night and reservations are available through Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Each campsite includes a covered picnic table and sits on relatively flat dirt pads with asphalt parking areas. Sites accommodate large rigs, with several reviewers mentioning 35-foot RVs and big fifth wheels fitting comfortably. The layout provides open views of surrounding canyon walls rather than tree-shaded privacy. Paul found site 85 "very roomy" and noted it "can be used as a pull through entering in front of site 87."
Wildlife viewing opportunities abound throughout the campground area. Campers regularly spot mule deer, roadrunners, wild turkeys, rabbits, and various lizards. The canyon's extensive trail system starts near the campground, though hikers should heed posted warnings about bringing adequate water. Jeff emphasizes that "all the trails warn to bring water and they mean it." Summer temperatures can reach over 100°F during the day before dropping to the 60s at night.
Clean bathhouses with hot showers serve each camping loop, though the nearest dump station requires a drive back toward the park entrance. Cell service varies by carrier, with T-Mobile showing strong coverage while Verizon struggles in the canyon depths. The Juniper Campground — Palo Duro Canyon State Park offers similar amenities less than a mile away for additional options within the park. Mesquite works well for campers prioritizing canyon views and trail access over campsite privacy.
