Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Cedar Hill, TX

Cedar Hill State Park Campground accommodates pets with spacious sites along Joe Pool Lake. This 1,200-acre park features over 300 wooded campsites with full hookups, covered picnic tables, and fire rings where leashed pets are welcome. Several other pet-friendly options surround Cedar Hill, including Loyd Park with cabin rentals and RV sites that accept dogs, and Treetops RV Resort offering both tent and RV camping for visitors with pets. Sites throughout these parks provide sufficient spacing and privacy between neighbors, allowing comfortable camping with dogs. Most parks maintain standard leash rules requiring pets to be secured at all times outside vehicles or camping units. Bathroom facilities remain consistently clean throughout these properties.

Hiking opportunities with dogs abound on Cedar Hill State Park's 10+ miles of trails, though portions may close seasonally due to flooding or maintenance. Joe Pool Lake provides water access for pets, though swimming areas vary by campground policy. The historical Penn Farm exhibit within Cedar Hill State Park offers an ADA-compliant walking area suitable for leashed pets. Most campgrounds in the area feature paved roads ideal for dog walking, with designated pet waste disposal stations. Campers frequently note the abundant wildlife including rabbits, roadrunners and deer that may interest pets, so maintaining control is essential. During summer months, early morning or evening walks prove most comfortable for pets, as daytime temperatures frequently reach uncomfortable levels. The proximity to Dallas (approximately 15 minutes) ensures quick access to veterinary services if needed.

    Boyd RV Park

Decent RV park in a Pleasant Small Town

Boyd is a true Texas small town with a pleasant hometown strip just up the road from Boyd RV Park. The small park boasts showers, a pets area, and a back area with nice country views and fields. The dog park has a good amount of space and is the nicest part of the park for stretching your legs.

It does not have a crowded vibe, and has everything to meet the basic needs of the RV or camper campers and then some. Prices are some of the best around, and if you need supplies or places to dine out, it is all a short walk away.

Shady Creek RV Park and Storage

    Family Reunion!

We traveled from West Texas, stayed 4 nights, had rain almost every day. The park is well laid out, small clean well maintained yards. The paved road was beginning to break up from all the rain with pot holes and new ones beginning to pop up. The pads are gravel and almost level. A few guests have been here a while, did see several arrivals and departures. Pet friendly, keep an eye on your pooch as one morning a large dog broke his/her leash one morning and attacked a lady's dog and knocked her down. She was not injured and her doggie is ok. We did not make it to the pool, the patio or to the dog park. All looked great from a distance. Verizon, full bars of service! 🙂

    Patriot RV Park

    Comfortable stay

Stayed for two months for my husband's work. Park manager, Becky, was helpful and nice. They have a saltwater pool, dog park, laundry room, shower/bathrooms, trees/landscaping and access to a boat ramp. Some sites are a bit tight. We were in the top part of the campground and had no issues with it being real wet. Have heard that the lower area does have pooling of water with heavy rain. It does go away quickly, but should be aware of this if you have lots of outside things or a pet. Would stay here again.

    Cedar Hill State Park Campground

One of my least favorite Texas State Parks To DAte

St Patrick’s Day 2018 we head out to Cedar Hill State Park on the banks of Joe Pool Lake. Cedar Hill State Park is one big Texas State Park! With over 300 campsites you are sure to find one to your liking! A visit to the historical Penn Farm, heavy spring rains and lots of paved roads for scooting make this visit to Cedar Hill State Park a truly unique Texas State Park Visit for the Dude RV crew!

There are 5 camping loops in this park! If you are wanting a lakeside campsite there are many options. The 3 loops on the north end of the park are close to the very busy road so there is road noise all the time.

The Penn FArm exhibit is very cool for the whole family and is ADA compliant but a bit on the rough side for handicap scooters.

The day use area was in need of some work on my visit but I think the day use area has since been rebuilt.

You can see the several videos of my visit on my YouTube...DudeRV

    Cedar Hill State Park Campground

    family fun

I've been camping here plenty of times as a kid growing up in Cedar Hill, TX. My family and I would camp in the spring, early/late summer, and fall months. Plenty of sites have a campfire grill and picnic table along with electrical outlets. Good camping sites for "glampers" who have to have Internet access and electronic use. Finding/reserving a campsite is super easy at the welcome center where you pay an entrance fee to the park. Plenty of lake to share with other people at this state park. My brother would go fishing at the smaller ponds here. At some campsites, you can here the traffic passing by on FM 1382, but if you can sleep through that noise, you'll be fine. Plenty of hiking/biking trails as well. Great to bring pets. Bathrooms are available as well near many of the campgrounds.

    Cedar Hill State Park Campground

    Great metroplex destination

Cedar Hill is perfect for a day trip if you’re living in the DFW metroplex. It offers camping, swimming, hiking, biking and the historic Penn Farm. Cedar Hill suffered a lot of damage during the 2015 floods but has rebounded nicely and is a nice place to get away from it all. Warning: not all campsites are created equal and it would be well worth your time to get there as early as possible to get a nice spot. In the summer people are in line waiting when the office opens at 6 AM to claim their spot. There is a lot of wildlife including bunnies, road runners, snakes and deer. There’s great wildflowers here during the spring. It also offers a boat ramp to Joe Pool Lake. If you’re going to swim the bottom of the lake is muddy. Fishing here is really good as well.

Guide to Cedar Hill

Camping in Cedar Hill, Texas offers wooded areas surrounding Joe Pool Lake at an elevation of about 810 feet, with summers reaching highs in the 90s and winters averaging 30-50°F. The region sits along the eastern edge of the Cross Timbers ecological zone, creating a transition landscape between eastern forests and western prairie that supports diverse wildlife species. Campgrounds provide varying levels of tree cover and separation between sites.

What to do

Bike riding on paved roads: Loyd Park provides excellent paved roads throughout the grounds. "Me and my wife loved this place. Great bike trails. Friendly staff and lovely sites, each pretty secluded from eachother," notes camper Cactus A.

Flea market shopping: Traders Village combines camping with shopping opportunities. As camper Alejandro G. describes, "one of the biggest flee markets around and it's 2 days of walking and shopping. Has water, power and sanitation too."

Trail exploration: Cedar Hill State Park trails vary in difficulty and condition. "Good trail system" is mentioned by camper Brody R., while others note portions may be temporarily closed after rain events, requiring flexible planning.

What campers like

Small camping loops: Cedar Hill State Park Campground organizes sites into small clusters. "The park is designed with small loops for 15-20 camp sites in each loop. Very little traffic right by the individual spots," explains Michael C., adding that this design makes for "Easy in and out of park."

Beach access: Multiple campgrounds provide shoreline access to Joe Pool Lake. "We stayed in site 115 great spot close to the water," mentions Tammie L. about her stay at Loyd Park, while others appreciate the dedicated swimming areas available during summer months.

Evening wildlife viewing: Wildlife observation opportunities exist throughout the area. Campers report seeing "rabbits, roadrunners and deer" with dusk and dawn offering the best viewing times when animals are most active.

What you should know

Seasonal flooding concerns: Portions of Cedar Hill State Park may close temporarily. "Partially closed due to flooding," notes Mendy S., highlighting the need to check current conditions before arrival, especially after heavy rain events.

Insect awareness: Treetops RV Resort provides well-maintained sites but the general area has typical Texas insects. At Cedar Hill State Park, Jill C. warns about "fire ants and chiggers all over our campsite!" Bringing appropriate insect repellent is essential year-round.

Site leveling challenges: Some campsites require leveling equipment. One camper at Treetops RV Resort noted: "Our spot was 171 and was very well shaded, the only thing is our trailer was level but we felt like we were leaning back."

Reservation requirements: Most area campgrounds fill quickly during weekends and holidays. "It was really busy but that's okay, we still enjoyed it," reports Jessica S. about Cedar Hill State Park, suggesting midweek visits for those seeking quieter experiences.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities coordination: Ensure swimming areas are open before promising kids lake time. "Joe Pool lake is part of park. It's a big park, lots of good spaces," mentions TJ & Laura S. about Loyd Park.

Kid-friendly entertainment: North Texas Jellystone offers structured activities for children. "Lots of activities to keep the kids entertained! Kids and adults both enjoy candy bar bingo and dancing the night away to tunes by an energetic DJ," shares Nola M.

Pet accommodation planning: For pet-friendly camping near Cedar Hill, Texas, site selection matters. "Campsites are a little close together nearest the water but probably the best sites in the Park," notes Myc C., suggesting balancing prime locations with adequate space for pets.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: When choosing an RV site, consider shade availability during summer months. At Treetops RV Resort, Troy notes it's "one of our favorite in the Metroplex... plus lots and lots of trees."

Traffic timing awareness: Access roads to some parks can become congested. "The road into the park is only 2 lanes with no shoulder," notes Jessica F. about her experience, suggesting arrival outside peak traffic hours.

Full hookup availability: Dallas/Arlington KOA Holiday provides complete services for RVers. "Located in an industrial area. Lots of sites with just enough room between to not feel cramped," explains Rob N., adding that trash collection service at campsites between 8am-4pm is "a definite plus."
