Cedar Hill State Park Campground offers limited options for equestrians, with no dedicated horse corrals among its features. The park spans 1,200 acres with multiple trails, though mountain biking appears to be the primary trail activity rather than horseback riding. Water access is available via Joe Pool Lake, and the park provides over 300 wooded campsites with electric hookups and water. The park maintains RV-friendly facilities including sanitary dump stations and shower facilities. Significant flooding affected portions of the park in recent years, though most areas have reopened. Traffic noise can be heard from many campsites.

Nearby Loyd Park in Grand Prairie serves as an alternative camping option within the Cedar Hill area, featuring tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, and yurt accommodations. The park offers full hookups with 30-amp service, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. Facilities include clean restrooms with hot showers, a sanitary dump station, and trash collection. Both parks provide water access, though Cedar Hill's swimming beach allows more recreational options than fishing spots along the muddy shoreline. Most sites require reservations, especially during peak seasons when visitors line up early to secure preferred locations. The parks' proximity to Dallas makes them popular weekend destinations despite occasional issues with fire ants and seasonal pests.

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

One of my least favorite Texas State Parks To DAte

St Patrick’s Day 2018 we head out to Cedar Hill State Park on the banks of Joe Pool Lake. Cedar Hill State Park is one big Texas State Park! With over 300 campsites you are sure to find one to your liking! A visit to the historical Penn Farm, heavy spring rains and lots of paved roads for scooting make this visit to Cedar Hill State Park a truly unique Texas State Park Visit for the Dude RV crew!

There are 5 camping loops in this park! If you are wanting a lakeside campsite there are many options. The 3 loops on the north end of the park are close to the very busy road so there is road noise all the time.

The Penn FArm exhibit is very cool for the whole family and is ADA compliant but a bit on the rough side for handicap scooters.

The day use area was in need of some work on my visit but I think the day use area has since been rebuilt.

You can see the several videos of my visit on my YouTube...DudeRV

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

      Great metroplex destination

Cedar Hill is perfect for a day trip if you’re living in the DFW metroplex. It offers camping, swimming, hiking, biking and the historic Penn Farm. Cedar Hill suffered a lot of damage during the 2015 floods but has rebounded nicely and is a nice place to get away from it all. Warning: not all campsites are created equal and it would be well worth your time to get there as early as possible to get a nice spot. In the summer people are in line waiting when the office opens at 6 AM to claim their spot. There is a lot of wildlife including bunnies, road runners, snakes and deer. There’s great wildflowers here during the spring. It also offers a boat ramp to Joe Pool Lake. If you’re going to swim the bottom of the lake is muddy. Fishing here is really good as well.

      hopefully itll return

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

      Cedar Hill Primitive

Cedar Hill packs a multitude of sites into a small space, so the best bet is to hike your gear into the primitive area for the night. Two primitive areas are offered and can sometimes be overgrown, so be prepared. Outside of those areas, there's not much trail space offered, so this park is better used for daytrips and fishing/swimming zones.

      Cedar Hill State Park Campground

      Probably WAS a nice park . . .

We visited Cedar Hill State Park in October, 2016 in a 33ft travel trailer. Overall the park is big, but at the time about half the park was closed due to the flooding in October 2015. The site was okay, but it's 1st come, 1st serve. This makes it harder to find a good site that is large enough for some RV/s / travel trailers. Although it's close to home, we probably will not visit this park again until it has been cleaned up and the lake access is re-opened.

    Guide to Cedar Hill

Cedar Hill sits at approximately 800 feet above sea level, making it one of the highest points in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The terrain features limestone escarpments and rolling hills covered with juniper, oak, and mesquite trees. Winter temperatures typically range from 35-60°F, while summer months often exceed 95°F with high humidity.

    What to do

Equestrian trail riding: Love Park offers quiet surroundings suitable for horse riders, though no dedicated corrals are available. "Meditatation is easy here. our peace here nice and quiet. Find ye for real," notes HoliMarie C.

Kayaking and fishing: The Bardwell Lake area provides multiple water access points for boats and kayaks. At Highview Park, "Good experience. Near Ennis, TX. Convenience stores, etc 4-6 miles away. Covered picnic table. Large combined family (private) restroom / shower," reports David S.

Mountain biking: Trail systems around Benbrook Lake offer routes for cyclists of varying skill levels. "It is very good for camping and kayaking around the area. It is very good for fishing as well and the campsites seem nice and clean," writes Tripler S. about Mustang Park Bear Creek Campground.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Loyd Park features well-spaced campsites with natural barriers. "Sites are spaced far apart all come with fire ring and covered picnic table. We stayed in site 115 great spot close to the water," explains Tammie L.

Wildlife viewing: Deer populations are common throughout parks in the area. "We had a great time. It was really busy but that's okay, we still enjoyed it," mentions Jessica S. about her stay at Cedar Hill State Park.

Clean bathroom facilities: Several campgrounds maintain well-kept restrooms. "Internet is great, bathrooms are clean, staff is nice!" reports Paxton M. about Northside RV Resort, which offers a gated entrance for added security.

    What you should know

Gate closure times: Some parks lock entrance gates at night. "If you're looking for a late night stop, this isn't it. Gates lock at 10 pm. We couldn't get in," warns Reagan K. about Highview Park.

Seasonal insects: Fire ants remain a persistent issue during warmer months. "I base my review rating on the beauty of the view," writes Debra M. about Mott Park, acknowledging that nature comes with some drawbacks.

Reservation requirements: Most campsites require advance booking through recreation.gov or park-specific systems. "We arrived after hours after calling and instructed to just go to our campsite. The park had absolutely no signs indicating where the campground is," notes Caroline D. about navigational challenges at Cedar Hill State Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach access options: Joe Pool Lake offers swimming areas with designated beach zones. "It feels like a state park, but run by the city. All sites are back in and allow for tent campers. Beach is great," reports John B. about Loyd Park.

Playground availability: Several parks include children's play equipment. "Gated. Level pads. Quiet. Dog park. Play ground. Wifi. Cable. Lake," lists Lauren Z. about Northside RV Resort.

Traffic considerations: Some campsites experience road noise. "The park is designed with small loops for 15-20 camp sites in each loop. Very little traffic right by the individual spots. Easy in and out of park," explains Michael C. about Cedar Hill State Park's layout.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Holiday Park Campground has varied terrain. "There were plenty of space for our 39' fifth wheel and F-450 on the asphalt pad. The site had a covered cement patio with picnic table, and bbq/fire pit that we couldn't use due to a burn ban," shares MickandKarla W.

Power availability: Many sites offer 50-amp service for larger rigs. "Some sites are 50 amp, while all are for 30 amp. Larger rigs are more accomdated next to the lake. But call ahead to see which sites have 50 amp, you'll need it in summer time," advises John B.

Water fill locations: Locate potable water sources before arrival. "We needed to fill our freshwater tank and he pointed out on the map the two dump stations with potable water," notes a reviewer at Holiday Park, highlighting the importance of checking water availability.
