Castroville Regional Park offers camping options just 25 miles west of San Antonio, at an elevation of approximately 758 feet. The area experiences hot summers with temperatures frequently reaching above 90°F from June to September, while winters remain relatively mild. The region's natural landscape features a mix of gentle hills and meadowlands along the Medina River watershed.
What to do
Explore riverside trails: The Medina River at Government Canyon State Natural Area provides natural habitat for local wildlife with accessible hiking paths. "There are plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore. I also appreciated the clean restrooms and showers, which made the experience much more convenient," notes visitor Essen D. of their experience at Castroville Regional Park.
Visit nearby historical sites: Castroville's historic district contains numerous 19th-century buildings reflecting the area's Alsatian heritage. "We stayed here for 3 days and this park did not disappoint. Located about 5 miles from The Alamo and Riverwalk. Both are a must see," shares Kirk J. about their stay at Travelers World RV Resort.
Go fishing: Several local campgrounds offer fishing access. "The park is beautiful and well-maintained, offering a peaceful and scenic environment. The nearby Medina River was perfect for a relaxing afternoon," reports Essen D., highlighting water activities available near Castroville.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Many campers highlight the well-maintained amenities. "The showers are currently shut off. Plenty of picnic tables and trash cans. In the morning expect joggers and dog walkers right at sunrise," mentions Kera P. about Government Canyon State Natural Area.
Wildlife viewing: The area hosts diverse wildlife populations. "We were in site 38 for 8 days... There were about a dozen deer that frequented the open areas at night and we could hear a couple of coyote packs off in the distance," shares Ray & Terri F.
Peaceful environment: Many sites offer quiet surroundings despite proximity to San Antonio. "Quiet and away from the noisy RVs this spot was peaceful and offered great access to the river," notes Stacey W. about their experience.
What you should know
Site selection matters: Consider specific site characteristics when booking. "Our site was deceptively unlevel, where our front wheels ended up an inch or so off of the ground. We saw a few others that way too," cautions Ray & Terri F.
Weather-dependent access: Trails may close during wet conditions. "Beware of trail closures when it rains. Show up early on the weekend when it's nice out otherwise all of San Antonio will be lined up to get in," advises Emily M. about Thousand Trails Medina Lake.
Varying privacy levels: Site privacy differs across campgrounds. "The open side of the campground is basically a gravel over asphalt parking lot, but the sites are bigger and do also have FHUs despite a previous review to the contrary," notes Ray & Terri F. describing site variations.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: "The park itself is nice, with playgrounds, a large open central area with several soccer fields and quite a few trails to hike," explains Ray & Terri F. about family amenities.
Outdoor education opportunities: "There are some dino tracks in the creekbed to check out in the backcountry along with an old stone house. Supposedly there are some hidden caves off trail but I haven't found them," shares Emily M. about educational features.
Swimming holes: "You will find the Medina River at its finest. Beautiful trails and deep swimming holes. Everything young kids love," states Patrick H. about Blazing Star Luxury RV Resort.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: "Full hookups are available... The sites in treed part are rather close together and irregular in length, some very short, but the current reservation system is wonky and doesn't list the site lengths," points out Ray & Terri F.
Connectivity considerations: "AT&T coverage was ok, generally between 2-3 bars of LTE service, with speeds up to about 1.5 MB/s. Unfortunately, even though the WiFi had been recently upgraded, it was effectively useless," adds Ray & Terri F. about connectivity options.
Pet-friendly amenities: Blazing Star Luxury RV Resort provides dedicated pet areas, making it suitable for pet friendly camping near Castroville, Texas. "Two sizes of dog parks for large and small breeds," mentions Jeff S., highlighting the separate facilities available at Alsatian RV Resort.
