Walk-in campsites, a visitor center with ranger-led hikes, and dinosaur tracks in the backcountry creekbed: Government Canyon State Natural Area packs a lot into a state park that sits close enough to San Antonio that day visitors regularly fill the parking lot by mid-morning on weekends. The campground operates on a Friday-through-Monday schedule, with overnight camping limited to Friday and Saturday nights, so planning ahead matters here.
Each walk-in site occupies its own small nook in the landscape, giving campers a degree of separation from neighbors that reviewers consistently note. The distances from the trailhead parking to the sites are manageable. Every site includes a fire ring with a grill grate, a picnic table, a trash hang, and a storage cupboard. Firewood sells for five dollars for five logs at the park. Cleanliness comes up repeatedly in reviews, with multiple campers describing the sites and facilities as well-maintained. Site 14 draws a specific mention for shade and distance from other campers.
The trail network is the main draw. Emily M. describes the trails as "extensive and rocky," with the backcountry route to the dinosaur tracks running roughly three hours round-trip. Visitors with dogs should know that only two trails, Lytle's Loop and the Savannah Trail, allow leashed pets. Trail closures happen when the ground is wet, and rangers enforce this to protect the terrain. Cell coverage has dead spots along some backcountry routes. The historic Zizelman House, dating to the 1880s, is another point of interest along the trail system.
Burn bans are common, particularly in summer and dry stretches, so carrying a gas stove is a practical backup. The park staff sometimes cap visitor numbers during busy periods, and Troy W. notes it is "best to arrive early, before 10am" on weekends. Reservations are available and worth booking in advance. Alcohol is technically prohibited, though enforcement at individual campsites appears limited based on reviewer accounts. Water spigots are located at trailhead areas. Hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available for RVs, with nightly rates ranging from $18 to $40.
Campers who want a different setup in the San Antonio region can browse places to camp near Helotes or consider SA Glamping for a more amenity-forward alternative.
