What to do
Hiking to panoramic viewpoints: Mount Roosevelt Road Dispersed Campsite provides direct access to the Roosevelt Friendship Tower trail. "Had an amazing time at this prime free dispersed campsite! Had my tundra equipped with a 5x8 trailer and could easily get to any of the sites... Bathroom close by the entrance/trailhead to Roosevelt Friendship Tower. Overall, great spot, make sure to hit the hike to the tower and overlook!"
Wildlife watching at dawn/dusk: Visit meadow edges near North Pole Rd Dispersed Camping where multiple campers report sightings. "Such a great spot to camp. There are other people but far enough away that you don't feel crowded. Also got to listen to some coyotes in the distance:)"
Rock climbing for all skill levels: Many tent campers use the area as a base for climbing. "Free dispersed camping is nice. Fire is not allowed. I had issues with the tent pad being about a foot too short for my tent (3 person tent) but that's more a personal issue. It was a pretty busy spot while the sun is out."
What campers like
Central location for regional attractions: RD 356 Dispersed Site serves as a strategic base camp. "My Son and I stayed here while visiting Mount Rushmore and the surrounding area's other attractions. There's a lot of dispersed spots here but most spots don't have a fire ring that I could see. There's only a few spots that a high clearance vehicle might be required but most of the road can be explored without one."
Quiet surroundings with minimal noise: Tent campers consistently mention the peaceful atmosphere. "We stayed here 1 night on a road trip. It was a Saturday afternoon when we arrived and a lot of the spots were taken, however we found an area to pull off the road that was perfect for our tent! It was so peaceful and relaxing, yet only minutes from Deadwood."
Cell service availability: While spotty, certain sites offer connectivity. "Road was in good shape. Lots of deer and wild life so watch out. Nice views but not that many spots before the super bumpy road about a mile in so we didn't go further. We have T mobile and we got 2 bars."
What you should know
Road conditions vary significantly: Many campers report challenging access roads. "Getting to the end of the road is steep and difficult; not recommended for low-clearance vehicles. Overall, a good overnight stop if you can manage the access challenges or if you find a good spot early."
Limited availability during peak season: Mount Roosevelt Camp and other popular areas fill quickly. "We came in one afternoon and there was hardly any sites available. It was beautiful tho!"
Weather preparedness essential: Mountain storms develop quickly. "We definitely had an intense hail/thunderstorm so ended up sleeping half the night in the car. Where nice places for morning hikes."
Fire restrictions strictly enforced: Most tent camping sites near Whitewood prohibit fires. "Maybe 3 spots.. one has hard slant.. no campfire signs all over.. not far to Roosevelt tower.. beautiful views."
Tips for camping with families
Choose accessible sites with bathroom access: Some dispersed areas offer basic facilities. "We were hauling a 20 ft camper looking to find the pull through spot we saw on the maps. The gravel road was accessible and pretty easy with the camper. We got to our spot just before sunset and only had one neighbor, though we passed a few tenters going up the road. Our spot was nice and a short walk to a vault toilet and trailhead."
Plan for temperature swings: Pack extra layers even in summer. "I enjoyed a few days up here. Really pretty mountain views, easy roads and the trees are spread out enough for solar/starlink. Be prepared for some snow, even in late May. I didn't see any obvious campsites, but lots of level areas to choose from."
Select sites with room for play: Wrinkled Rock offers open spaces. "Great place to stay for free only a few miles from mount rushmore. There are several specific places for tents to be put up. 14 day maximum stay, bathroom on sight."
Tips from RVers
Stay near entrance of forest roads: High-clearance is essential beyond initial sites. "The road does have some bumps in it but overall you do not need a four-wheel drive. The spot I camped at I was able to have decent Verizon signal however the area is a bit spotty for Verizon. The area seems to not allow for campfires."
Level sites require planning: Many tent camping locations near Whitewood have uneven terrain. "Site was pretty level and had a fireplace."
Arrive early for best spots: Competition for good sites increases by afternoon. "We just stayed at this campground for a couple of nights, but we hadn't had full hook ups for over a month. Kind of packed in here, but we needed a place to scout from, so this was perfect. Site are big enough to accommodate most Amy size rig."
