    Lake Louise Recreation Area

    Beautiful rural area

We have stayed at the park off and on for 3 weeks in July 2022. Our 42ft fifth wheel, dually truck and Ram 1500 fit in one camp site. There was plenty of shade at each site and room between camp sites. They have a dump station. There's 50 amp and potable water with long hose. The park is well kept and bathrooms clean. There are kayaks and canoes to rent, docks to fish from and hiking trails.

    Memorial Park

Decent campground with easy water access

Great campground right on Lake Kampeska. Lots of sites for RVs that need electric, some with water, fewer with full hookups... There is a dump station. The walking path through the trees and campground is nice and long, same for the bike path. Multiple jungle gyms scattered throughout. Pet friendly, keep em on the leash. Seems like the put-in could get busy since it's free parking. Beware, the lake does have zebra mussels.

    Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

    R & R Campground

Couldn’t ask for more from a highway stop

This is a full-service campground directly alongside I90. Even though it’s adjacent to the interstate, we really didn’t hear any highway noise. The park has full hookups with both 30 and 50 amp sites. The water pressure is great and the water/sewer connections are well-placed. The sites are level and many are well-shaded. There is a small convenience store with ice and a couple of other essentials. There are restaurants and other amenities within walking distance. Everything is very clean — the laundry room is spotless. The host, Julie is exceptionally hospitable, friendly and accommodating. If you’re just passing through or just want a centrally located spot from which to explore the area, you’re unlikely to find a better spot.

    Mitchell KOA

    Family Friendly Stop Over

We stayed at the Mitchell KOA one night as a stop over on our way to Custer, SD. The feature we liked best is that all RV, 5th Wheel/Camper sites are set up as pull through. We called while on the road to see if they had any open spots, and they got us in for the night:) The campground hosts were very welcoming and friendly. There is an outdoor pool, but it was pretty crowded (With temps in the 90's who could blame anyone!!!) and they have a cute little miniature golf course too!! This is a pet friendly place with a large fenced in area for your pets to play in. The only drawback we saw was the lack of trees for shade and privacy. You can literally shake hands with your next door neighbor while sitting at your picnic table.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Twin Lakes Campground provides access to peaceful lake fishing where anglers regularly catch walleye and northern pike. "Beautiful, 6 spots 2 big enough for more than class b RV 4 spots are on the water. Only fire ring with grate at each site. Has small pavillion with picnic tables and a vault toilet," notes karen.

Prairie wildlife viewing: Early mornings at Twin Lakes Campground offer remarkable bird watching opportunities. "The most spectacular morning of watching the flocks of birds diving at the water to get food with the morning colors in the background I've ever seen. So don't miss that early morning coffee to see that show," advises Nate R.

Historical attractions: Ingalls Homestead offers unique educational activities focused on pioneer life, located 45 minutes from Huron. "Each station on the self-guided tour has an activity with incredibly nice and informed hosts. Most of the buildings are based on the original plans and descriptions from the Ingalls family," explains Corinna B.

What campers like

Quiet countryside atmosphere: Campgrounds around Huron are notably peaceful compared to busier tourist areas. "A great well maintained spot in the middle SD farmland near a peaceful lake. The long dirt/gravel road surrounding was fun to navigate after a thunderstorm, but not too bad at 35mph," reports Brandon S. about Twin Lakes Campground.

Family-friendly pioneer activities: Ingalls Homestead offers hands-on historical experiences that engage children. "Friendly folks and simple camping. Lots of things for the kids to do and play just like its 1880," says Gregory B.

Affordable rates: Many camping facilities near Huron maintain lower prices compared to western South Dakota destinations. At Hills RV Park, Clint G. found "this campground was a great deal for $20 per night with Passport America. The onsite manager is very friendly and helpful."

What you should know

Insects and weather conditions: The prairie environment brings specific challenges, especially during summer months. "Being so close to that [cow and horse pasture], the flies were the worst we have ever experienced in our lives. While we did stay 2 nights for free, we had to sit inside our bug canopy," warns Nate R. about Twin Lakes Campground.

Rural isolation: Many campgrounds sit at considerable distances from services. "There isn't much fuel to be had in the area, so be sure to have plenty of gas before you head that way," advises Nate R. regarding the Twin Lakes area.

Limited amenities at smaller parks: County Line Campground provides basic services in a more remote setting. "Simple RV sites, with 50Amp and sewer hookups. Nothing fancy around, but a great place to stop over and get a night's rest!" explains Kelly F.

Tips for camping with families

Budget-friendly options: Lake Mitchell Campground offers reasonable rates and family amenities. "Nice swim area, pretty campsites, especially the tent areas that sit high over the lake and have pretty views of the water. Nice bathrooms and park. Very friendly park host," writes Molly M.
