Best RV Parks & Resorts near Brandon, SD

Big Sioux Recreation Area near Brandon provides full hookup RV sites with electric, water, and sewer connections. The campground features level sites that accommodate various RV sizes including big rigs, with paved loop roads and gravel pull-through pads. "The RV sites are spacious, level and well-arranged," noted one visitor who appreciated the accessible dump station. Palisades State Park Campground, located about 15 miles northeast of Brandon, offers electric hookups and recently opened a new King section specifically designed for larger RVs with towed vehicles. Other options include Sioux Falls Yogi Bear (Jellystone) with full hookup sites for RVs up to 40 feet, and Lake Vermillion Recreation Area which maintains seasonal availability from April through November.

Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months when these parks fill quickly, especially on weekends. The new section at Palisades features hard-surface roads with gravel sites that provide excellent satellite reception but minimal shade. According to reviews, Verizon cell service varies throughout the region, with Big Sioux Recreation Area offering manageable though imperfect coverage. Most campgrounds in the area permit pets, but leash requirements are strictly enforced. While dump stations are available at most parks, they can become congested during peak checkout times, particularly at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area where visitors reported morning lineups. Winter camping options are limited, with Big Sioux Recreation Area being one of the few facilities operating year-round.

    Tower Campground

    Friendly but noisy

Very friendly and accommodating staff. This park is open year round and well set up for cold weather, the water spigot is heated so if you invest in a heated water line and have an insulated camper you should be good for the cold. Many units were tucked in for winter with skirting and large external propane tanks. The negatives are noise and lights. Highway noise was very very loud. Easy to see outside but not a lot of camp feel. Bright light through skylites while sleeping. Didn’t use bathrooms or showers so no comment on facilities.

    Dakota Sunsets RV Park

So good I did want to tell anyone about it

We only stayed 2 nights here but could have stayed much longer. This RV campground is perfect. The attention to detail you see in this park is not something we have seen a lot during our travels. The gravel roadways to each campsite are groomed perfectly level. Art, sculptures and flower pots are everywhere. Not a thing out of place. The Wifi was really fast…the best we have seen in over 1 yr and full time camping. The office and store have ice and a wonderful selection of goodies, The park is surrounded by corn and soybean fields and is quiet. This is a real gem of a campground. Not a thing wrong with it. We highly recommend. We had over 50Mbps on our Verzion and ATT hot spot as well as the RV park's Wifi system. This place is smoked hot for internet connectivity. This park is Big Rig friendly with very large pull throughs

    Gunderson Park

Up to 14 days free camping

CAMPING IS NOW ONLY ALLOWED BETWEEN MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY. NO WINTER CAMPING IS ALLOWED ANY LONGER.

Gunderson Park is a nice little boondocking location just ½ mile from the downtown area of Centerville. They have 2 fire pit locations, but, after speaking with the official at city hall we found out you can camp pretty much anywhere in the park you would like.

It is free to camp here, you can stay virtually as long as you wish to according to that same official. There are no hook-ups. No bathroom facilities. No picnic tables. No playground for children. You may fish with a South Dakota license in the lazy rolling Vermillion River that skirts the park on 3 sides. They have a cement boat ramp. I will say when we stayed there the river was so low you would have had great difficulties getting a boat launched. On the west side of the park there are park benches at the beginning (or end of the walk depending on your start location) with a cemented walk way along the road to the park and the Vermillion River. It runs close to a quarter mile long with benches about half way through the walk. The city keeps this park mowed during the summer months. This is an old old park dating back to 1800's. The trees are massive and just as old providing beautiful shade. There are remnants of old stone items remaing in the park, grape vine thingy, a stone fireplace and pillars. Our stay favored us with Bald Eagle sightings. 2 hung around the trees on the other side of the river in full view, it was wonderful.

At the city park you can dump your tanks. We didn't need to so we didn't visit this location. At the four way stop sign located at the center of the town, turn west, travel one block and on the south side of the street you will find city hall. There they will tell you how to find the dump site.

This seems to be a favorite location for locals to drive through. Sometimes we found traffic through the park on the heavy side but most of the time very quiet. People are small town friendly. Population is around 900 people. Town has a grocery store, convenience store, bank, medical clinic, pharmacy, restaurant, bowling alley, auto parts store, bakery and other businesses. We noticed 4 churches in our drive around the town. At the city park they have a community swimming pool, Frisbee golf, 2 ball diamonds, tennis courts, playground equipment, volleyball courts, 2 picnic house areas and a location for 4 RV campsites with electrical plug ins [2 50 amp and 2 30 amp) for $10.00 a night with limited stay.

    Tower Campground

    Nice sites nice staff

The spots are good size and most are shared asphalt pads where your rear end faces your neighbors rear end. However you don’t share a pedestal or any other hookups with them. Our site had a water hook up that was equipped with a heater on the spigot for cold weather.

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

The East Campground Area was Very Nice

We followed our GPS getting off I-29 at exit 79 in Sioux Falls and going straight west on hwy 42 for about 20 miles to the sign for the right turn to go up to the recreation area. It would have been just as easy to catch I-90 west as well. At the main/west campground, we followed the sign for the East Campground and turned left at the white recreation sign right at the bottom of the hill. Passing the boat ramp, we saw the pull-along sites (49-62), which are small and close to the road accurately described in forums as not big-rig friendly. The fresh water fill spigot is in a large pull-out on the right, past the boat launch and just before the 10 mph sign. The dump station is in the West Campground. We continued to the end loop and backed into site 43 (50/30/20 AMP), which was easy thanks to its corner location. As soon as we had settled in, the very friendly camp host come over to check us in. We had already paid the $30 a night plus $10 nonresident reservation fees, to find out starting this year we needed to pay a non-resident $15 a night state park fee or $60 for a year pass. We were able to purchase, choosing a yearly, online and the host gave us a temp sticker for our window. Our site was spacious enough for our 40 5th wheel and F450. The electric hookup is at the back; we needed about 30 of cord. All sites here are electric only and nicely spaced apart. Site 43 offered a beautiful lake view, which we enjoyed during our peaceful four-night stay in early May. Verizon had 3 bars, T-Mobile had 2, and our T-Mobile house internet clocked 207 Mbps down/ 3.49 Mbps up. Satellite reception should be fine in most sites except site 45, which is heavily shaded. There's both a shower house and vaulted toilets in the east area. Spring was coming alive with gobbling turkeys and cackling pheasants; we even got a show from a strutting tom turkey. Overall, a quiet and scenic stay with great wildlife viewing and lake views.

Guide to Brandon

Brandon's camping options span prairies and creek-side environments in eastern South Dakota, where the elevation averages around 1,600 feet. The region features a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, creating diverse camping seasons with April through October being most popular. Most campgrounds within 20 miles of Brandon maintain unpaved sites with electrical hookups.

What to do

Rock climbing at quartzite formations: Palisades State Park Campground offers unusual geological features along Split Rock Creek. "Stunning quartzite formations make for some great climbing. It's a really small park which is both good and bad. The trails aren't very long, but it's not usually overcrowded," notes one visitor to Palisades State Park Campground.

Disc golf course access: Big Sioux Recreation Area includes a frisbee golf course alongside its trail system. A visitor mentioned, "I didn't partake but they do have a Frisbee golf course. Took a short walk on their trail system to the suspension walking bridge."

Swimming and beach activities: Lake Vermillion Recreation Area features a sand beach for swimming during summer months. As one camper observed, "There is a very nice sand beach, playgrounds, fishing, star gazing, and four campgrounds." Another added, "We stayed here at site 69 E for one night in August 2020. The campground was fairly empty, but there were many families enjoying the lake on Sunday afternoon."

What campers like

Spacious campsites with privacy: Big Sioux Recreation Area receives positive feedback for site spacing. "Our site was nice, level, spacious, and had plenty of grass coverage (instead of dirt). Bugs were a pain but not much you can do about that," shared one camper. Another noted, "The campsites are clean, spacious, and beautiful."

Clean shower facilities: Campground cleanliness stands out at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area. A camper reported, "Rangers are nice, park Host is amazing, facilities are clean." Another mentioned, "Definitely not roughing it but beautiful setting with possibly the best kept campsites and restrooms I've experienced on public ground!"

Family-focused amenities: Sioux Falls Yogi Bear emphasizes activities for children. "Great for kids! We had a slight issue with inconsiderate neighbors who kept driving their golf carts through our camp (which can happen anywhere) but otherwise it's a great place for families to camp," noted one family. Another visitor shared, "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests."

What you should know

Additional fees for non-residents: State parks charge extra fees beyond the base camping rate. A visitor to Big Sioux Recreation Area explained, "I made my reservations online ($30 for the reservation, $1.26 tax, $0.45 for more tax, and $10 for the non-resident reservation fee). I had no sooner settled in, and a woman knocked on my van asking that I pay a city tax, an additional $15."

Limited tent-only options: Designated tent camping areas can be scarce among RV sites near Brandon, South Dakota. One camper noted about Big Sioux, "They had only a few tentsites available amid all the RV sites, but they were right on the edge of the playground, so the families had to walk right through my campsite to get to the play area."

Train noise at some locations: Certain campgrounds experience railroad noise. A Palisades State Park visitor mentioned, "The trains ran close by, and the flies were terrible."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly programming: Sioux Falls Yogi Bear offers organized children's activities throughout summer. One family reported, "Saturday night was the yogi bear parade and it was the highlight of our entire stay." Another mentioned, "The staff was friendly and quite helpful. The people visiting where nice and easy to talk to. I had a great relaxing week."

Playground access considerations: Some camping sites sit adjacent to playground equipment. As one visitor to Big Sioux Recreation Area noted, "They had only a few tentsites available amid all the RV sites, but they were right on the edge of the playground, so the families had to walk right through my campsite to get to the play area."

Off-season camping benefits: Visiting outside peak summer months can provide more space. A camper at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area advised, "During the off-season, sep thru mid May (when the kids are in school) is the perfect time to stay at this state park. I do not stay during the high occupancy times since I don't like crowded camping."

Tips from RVers

Check site lengths before booking: RV sites near Brandon, South Dakota vary in length accommodations. A visitor to Dakota Sunsets RV Park shared, "The sites were level enough that we didn't even half to unhook our trailer for our quick overnight stay." Another camper noted, "The site was more than long enough for our 39' 5th Wheel and F-450 truck."

Internet connectivity varies: Cellular and wifi service differs significantly between campgrounds. A camper at Lake Vermillion reported, "King also offers free Wi-Fi with a download speed of 22 Mbps, while Queen has no T-Mobile service. However, King provides 15 Mbps of service." Another camper at Dakota Sunsets RV Park noted, "The Wifi was really fast…the best we have seen in over 1 yr and full time camping."

Early dump station lines: Prepare for morning congestion at sanitary facilities. At Dakota Sunsets, one RVer mentioned, "The only issue I will say is that our site was next to the 'Stinky Waste' Water Lagoon and it did stink pretty bad when they started up the pump in the morning."
