Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Huron, SD

Memorial Park in Huron provides electric hookups and water for RV campers with pets, requiring leashed dogs throughout the campground area near Lake Kampeska. The campground has walking paths through trees and a long bike trail with multiple playground areas scattered throughout. South Dakota State Fairgrounds also accepts pets in their grassy, level sites with full hookups including sewer and 50-amp connections. Pet owners can access nearby shower buildings and restrooms while staying at both facilities. Campground areas remain generally quiet with occasional train noise at the fairgrounds location. Dumpsters are available for waste disposal, including pet waste, with trash barrels emptied regularly at each fairgrounds site.

Twin Lakes Campground offers free camping with pet-friendly sites featuring fire rings at each location, though without electric hookups or water connections. The campground provides vault toilets and sits directly beside the lake with spots suitable for tents, small RVs, and class B campers. Only two sites can accommodate larger RVs, with four spots positioned directly on the water. Pets must remain leashed while exploring the lakeside area, which offers excellent bird watching opportunities in the early morning. Campers report varying experiences with flies during summer months due to nearby livestock areas. The long dirt road leading to the campground can become challenging after rain, requiring slower travel at approximately 35mph to navigate safely with pets.

    Great overnight spot in SD

We stayed here in our way to southwestern SD. It’s your typical KOA experience. Nice staff and decent facilities. Not really close to much but only a short drive into Mitchell. There’s a small pool and a nice dog park. Many of the sites have large shade trees. Overall a pleasant experience.

    Famil-E-Fun Campground & RV Park

    Peaceful, well maintained campground

Campers were mostly in RVs, I was in a tent and not surrounded by many others. Bathrooms and showers were very clean and well maintained and the owner was nice and gave us tips on things to do in the rest of South Dakota!

    Woonsocket City Park

Exit 322 off of I-90 to this great spot!

Great city campground and super peaceful spot. Not too far off of I-90 (30 mins.) when traveling through South Dakota.

Tent camping center of town without electric is free. Pads with electric are$15. Free pool, nice small lake across from site, concrete sidewalk around lake. Bathrooms in pool house, water on site. Picnic tables on site. 1-5 campsites available.

    Hills RV Park

Close to the interstate for easy access, yet surrounded by Sourh Dakota corn fields

An excellent choice for staying if traveling across South Dakota. The sites are gravel, but are all pull through. Most are full hookup, but there is a on site dump station for those with electric only. The swimming pool was an absolute total plus for a hot July day. The park owner Nancy is a fantastic host. Definitely a stay again park

    Memorial Park

Decent campground with easy water access

Great campground right on Lake Kampeska. Lots of sites for RVs that need electric, some with water, fewer with full hookups... There is a dump station. The walking path through the trees and campground is nice and long, same for the bike path. Multiple jungle gyms scattered throughout. Pet friendly, keep em on the leash. Seems like the put-in could get busy since it's free parking. Beware, the lake does have zebra mussels.

    Mitchell KOA

    Family Friendly Stop Over

We stayed at the Mitchell KOA one night as a stop over on our way to Custer, SD. The feature we liked best is that all RV, 5th Wheel/Camper sites are set up as pull through. We called while on the road to see if they had any open spots, and they got us in for the night:) The campground hosts were very welcoming and friendly. There is an outdoor pool, but it was pretty crowded (With temps in the 90's who could blame anyone!!!) and they have a cute little miniature golf course too!! This is a pet friendly place with a large fenced in area for your pets to play in. The only drawback we saw was the lack of trees for shade and privacy. You can literally shake hands with your next door neighbor while sitting at your picnic table.

    Ingalls Homestead

Magical Must-See for Kids & All Little House on the Prairie Fans

This is a truly magical place, and if you’ve ever read any of the Little House on the Prairie books and are anywhere near De Smet South Dakota, do yourself a favor and swing by.

    The Campground

The Ingalls Homestead consists of two main parts. First is the "campground," which is a basically a large grassy slope where you can set up your tent for just $10. It includes hot showers, flush toilets, and a few picnic tables and fire-pits throughout the field. There's also fairly basic RV parking for $30 with electric and water hookups and a dump site as well as some basic but cool covered wagons for $60. We arrived just as the sun was setting, found a lovely spot for our tent, and then paid in the shop the next morning. The bathrooms were clean, the showers were a little strange but also clean and hot (basically a large room cordoned off by several shower curtains).

    The Homestead

De Smet is where the Ingalls family lived during the "Long Winter" of 1880-1881, and the Ingalls Homestead is a "family run business" that brings to life many activities from the 1880s such as visiting a one-room schoolhouse, making a corn on the cob doll, going on a covered wagon ride, etc. It's truly hands-on and some of our favorite time was spent hanging out in "Pa's" lean-to barn with the barn kitties and riding horses and ponies. My oldest son also learned how to drive the covered wagon to the schoolhouse down the road (another treat). Each station on the self-guided tour has an activity with incredibly nice and informed hosts. Most of the buildings are based on the original plans and descriptions from the Ingalls family, though no original buildings remain on the site. Visiting the homestead is an additional $15 per person over the age of five, and while you could camp without visiting the homestead, it was definitely worth a half or full-day visit.

    Mitchell KOA

They pay attention to the details

Best KOA we’ve been at. The bathrooms are colorful and the shower benches are nice and the showers are rain shower heads. It was raining and the bathrooms were dry and clean. The shop was well stocked with needs and wants. We almost adopted the stray cat there too. Good luck Mr Fuzzy Popcorn!

Guide to Huron

Camping options near Huron, South Dakota extend beyond traditional RV parks with several dispersed camping locations within 30-50 miles of the city. The area sits at approximately 1,300 feet elevation in the James River valley with summer temperatures averaging 85°F during peak camping season. Winter camping isn't recommended as temperatures frequently drop below freezing from November through March.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lake Mitchell Campground offers direct lake access with designated fishing areas. "Great campground right on Lake Kampeska. The walking path through the trees and campground is nice and long, same for the bike path," notes one visitor about nearby Memorial Park.

Bird watching excursions: Early morning hours provide excellent bird watching at Twin Lakes. One camper shares, "The most spectacular morning of watching the flocks of birds diving at the water to get food with the morning colors in the background I've ever seen. So don't miss that early morning coffee to see that show."

Historical experiences: Visit Ingalls Homestead for hands-on 1880s activities. "Each station on the self-guided tour has an activity with incredibly nice and informed hosts," writes a reviewer. The homestead offers covered wagon rides, visits to a one-room schoolhouse, and traditional craft activities.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Dakota Campground maintains well-kept bathrooms and showers. "Pool was awesome and the bathhouse was very clean," mentions one camper. Another states, "Very small but awesome campground, quiet and nice laundry and small store."

Helpful staff: Campground hosts often go above expectations. At Lake Mitchell, "The host here is the sweetest, busiest woman I've ever seen!" One Dakota Campground visitor noted, "The owner, Josh was so helpfull in assisting me with repairs and even made a custom part for the hitch."

Quiet locations: Many campgrounds provide peaceful environments despite proximity to roads. "Mitchell KOA is located very close to the highway (tho no noise). Decent sized pull thru sites with lots of big shade trees." At Dakota Campground, a reviewer mentioned it's "Just off the highway but the noise is minimal at best."

What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer heat requires preparation, especially at open sites. A Twin Lakes camper warns, "Being so close to that, the flies were the worst we have ever experienced in our lives," noting proximity to livestock areas can affect comfort.

Road conditions: Access roads to dispersed camping sites may require caution. "The long dirt/gravel road surrounding was fun to navigate after a thunderstorm, but not too bad at 35mph," shares a Twin Lakes visitor.

Water safety: Check for alerts before swimming. At Lake Mitchell Campground, "There was hazardous algae in the water when we went, so couldn't swim." Another camper confirmed, "The lake had toxic algae bloom (NOT anyone's fault) so if you're planning on water activities, you might want to check first."

Tips for camping with families

Interactive history sites: Ingalls Homestead provides education through play. "The other really cool thing about this spot—especially for families—are all the fun activities at the homestead itself," writes a visitor. Another adds, "Friendly folks and simple camping. Lots of things for the kids to do and play just like its 1880."

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer play equipment. "Multiple jungle gyms scattered throughout" at Memorial Park provide entertainment for children.

Pet-friendly policies: Dog friendly campgrounds near Huron include Dakota Campground and Mitchell KOA. "Pet friendly, keep em on the leash," notes a Memorial Park camper. Most pet-friendly campgrounds near Huron require leashes at all times.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At some campgrounds, positioning matters. "We stayed before season, so we had the place practically to ourselves. For $30, we had W&E, fire pit (firewood not sold), picnic table and free access to the homestead," an RV camper at Ingalls Homestead reported.

Hookup availability: County Line Campground provides full service sites. "Simple RV sites, with 50Amp and sewer hookups. Nothing fancy around, but a great place to stop over and get a night's rest!" A different visitor confirmed, "Quiet spot large enough for a 42' big rig and dually truck right off the main strip in a small country town. There's 6 full hook ups including water, sewer and 50 amp."

Dump station access: Plan your waste management. At Tulare City Park, "We stayed one night on our way to North Dakota. Campgrounds were mowed and picked up. Water at our site. 110, 30amp, 50amp hook-ups at 3 of 3 sites."
