Best RV Parks & Resorts near Harrisburg, SD

Several RV parks surround the Harrisburg area, ranging from basic utility setups to full-service campgrounds. Big Sioux Recreation Area provides electric hookups and 30-amp service with spacious, level sites that accommodate larger vehicles. Red Barn RV and Campground offers full hookup sites with 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections, operating from April through November. Lake Vermillion Recreation Area maintains year-round availability with both 30-amp hookups and pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs. Sioux Falls KOA features pull-through sites with good spacing between neighboring units, located just off Interstate 90 for convenient access. "Good location with easy pull through. Level enough to not unhook."

Dump stations at most parks tend to experience morning congestion, particularly during summer weekends and holiday periods. Full hookup sites generally require advance reservations, especially at parks closer to Sioux Falls. Cell service varies across the region, with stronger signals near major highways and weaker coverage at some of the more rural locations. Most RV parks in the area welcome pets, though specific restrictions may apply depending on the facility. According to one visitor, the dump station at Lake Vermillion "was really busy in the morning so plan accordingly." Several parks close or reduce services during winter months, with the exception of Windmill RV Park and a few others that maintain year-round operations. Dakota Sunsets RV Park provides 55 sites with both 50-amp and 30-amp service, operating seasonally from mid-April through October.

    Tower Campground

    Friendly but noisy

Very friendly and accommodating staff. This park is open year round and well set up for cold weather, the water spigot is heated so if you invest in a heated water line and have an insulated camper you should be good for the cold. Many units were tucked in for winter with skirting and large external propane tanks. The negatives are noise and lights. Highway noise was very very loud. Easy to see outside but not a lot of camp feel. Bright light through skylites while sleeping. Didn’t use bathrooms or showers so no comment on facilities.

    Dakota Sunsets RV Park

So good I did want to tell anyone about it

We only stayed 2 nights here but could have stayed much longer. This RV campground is perfect. The attention to detail you see in this park is not something we have seen a lot during our travels. The gravel roadways to each campsite are groomed perfectly level. Art, sculptures and flower pots are everywhere. Not a thing out of place. The Wifi was really fast…the best we have seen in over 1 yr and full time camping. The office and store have ice and a wonderful selection of goodies, The park is surrounded by corn and soybean fields and is quiet. This is a real gem of a campground. Not a thing wrong with it. We highly recommend. We had over 50Mbps on our Verzion and ATT hot spot as well as the RV park's Wifi system. This place is smoked hot for internet connectivity. This park is Big Rig friendly with very large pull throughs

    Gunderson Park

Up to 14 days free camping

CAMPING IS NOW ONLY ALLOWED BETWEEN MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY. NO WINTER CAMPING IS ALLOWED ANY LONGER.

Gunderson Park is a nice little boondocking location just ½ mile from the downtown area of Centerville. They have 2 fire pit locations, but, after speaking with the official at city hall we found out you can camp pretty much anywhere in the park you would like.

It is free to camp here, you can stay virtually as long as you wish to according to that same official. There are no hook-ups. No bathroom facilities. No picnic tables. No playground for children. You may fish with a South Dakota license in the lazy rolling Vermillion River that skirts the park on 3 sides. They have a cement boat ramp. I will say when we stayed there the river was so low you would have had great difficulties getting a boat launched. On the west side of the park there are park benches at the beginning (or end of the walk depending on your start location) with a cemented walk way along the road to the park and the Vermillion River. It runs close to a quarter mile long with benches about half way through the walk. The city keeps this park mowed during the summer months. This is an old old park dating back to 1800's. The trees are massive and just as old providing beautiful shade. There are remnants of old stone items remaing in the park, grape vine thingy, a stone fireplace and pillars. Our stay favored us with Bald Eagle sightings. 2 hung around the trees on the other side of the river in full view, it was wonderful.

At the city park you can dump your tanks. We didn't need to so we didn't visit this location. At the four way stop sign located at the center of the town, turn west, travel one block and on the south side of the street you will find city hall. There they will tell you how to find the dump site.

This seems to be a favorite location for locals to drive through. Sometimes we found traffic through the park on the heavy side but most of the time very quiet. People are small town friendly. Population is around 900 people. Town has a grocery store, convenience store, bank, medical clinic, pharmacy, restaurant, bowling alley, auto parts store, bakery and other businesses. We noticed 4 churches in our drive around the town. At the city park they have a community swimming pool, Frisbee golf, 2 ball diamonds, tennis courts, playground equipment, volleyball courts, 2 picnic house areas and a location for 4 RV campsites with electrical plug ins [2 50 amp and 2 30 amp) for $10.00 a night with limited stay.

    Tower Campground

    Nice sites nice staff

The spots are good size and most are shared asphalt pads where your rear end faces your neighbors rear end. However you don’t share a pedestal or any other hookups with them. Our site had a water hook up that was equipped with a heater on the spigot for cold weather.

    Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

The East Campground Area was Very Nice

We followed our GPS getting off I-29 at exit 79 in Sioux Falls and going straight west on hwy 42 for about 20 miles to the sign for the right turn to go up to the recreation area. It would have been just as easy to catch I-90 west as well. At the main/west campground, we followed the sign for the East Campground and turned left at the white recreation sign right at the bottom of the hill. Passing the boat ramp, we saw the pull-along sites (49-62), which are small and close to the road accurately described in forums as not big-rig friendly. The fresh water fill spigot is in a large pull-out on the right, past the boat launch and just before the 10 mph sign. The dump station is in the West Campground. We continued to the end loop and backed into site 43 (50/30/20 AMP), which was easy thanks to its corner location. As soon as we had settled in, the very friendly camp host come over to check us in. We had already paid the $30 a night plus $10 nonresident reservation fees, to find out starting this year we needed to pay a non-resident $15 a night state park fee or $60 for a year pass. We were able to purchase, choosing a yearly, online and the host gave us a temp sticker for our window. Our site was spacious enough for our 40 5th wheel and F450. The electric hookup is at the back; we needed about 30 of cord. All sites here are electric only and nicely spaced apart. Site 43 offered a beautiful lake view, which we enjoyed during our peaceful four-night stay in early May. Verizon had 3 bars, T-Mobile had 2, and our T-Mobile house internet clocked 207 Mbps down/ 3.49 Mbps up. Satellite reception should be fine in most sites except site 45, which is heavily shaded. There's both a shower house and vaulted toilets in the east area. Spring was coming alive with gobbling turkeys and cackling pheasants; we even got a show from a strutting tom turkey. Overall, a quiet and scenic stay with great wildlife viewing and lake views.

    Lazy H Campground

    Hidden Gem

This is a fairly new campground that has a lot to offer.

The pull through sites are fully concrete and level. They all have a huge table and stone fire pit. Plenty of room for a second vehicle.

    Full hookups are great.

Tons of activities to do here. There’s fishing, boating, biking, and swimming. The beach has giant floating lily pads that the kids loved. There are showers on the beach to wash off feet after you’re done swimming.

You can order firewood, ice, or worms, and they will drop it off at your site. I believe you can even rent or request a golf cart to make getting around easier.

The only regret I have is not staying longer. Truly a wonderful place.

Sprint/T-mobile data was around 56 Mbps down.

Guide to Harrisburg

Harrisburg, South Dakota camping areas sit within the Big Sioux River basin at approximately 1,400 feet elevation, where seasonal temperatures range from winter lows near 0°F to summer highs reaching 90°F. The flat prairie terrain around Harrisburg transitions to more varied landscapes toward the north at Big Sioux Recreation Area, with camping options available year-round despite South Dakota's significant seasonal weather variations. Most campgrounds require day-use fees in addition to camping fees, which typically run $15-50 per night depending on amenities.

What to do

Frisbee golf courses nearby: Big Sioux Recreation Area offers a complete disc golf course alongside camping options. According to one camper, "They do have a Frisbee golf course. Took a short walk on their trail system to the suspension walking bridge."

Beach access during summer: Lake Vermillion Recreation Area provides a sand beach area for swimming, though water conditions vary by season. "The park has a lake with a beach area - looked to have quite a bit of algae while we were there in early July. The area is very busy with boaters," notes one visitor.

Hiking trail exploration: Multiple Big Sioux Recreation Area paths wind through restored prairie lands. A camper mentions, "Beautiful hiking trails, play grounds, disc golf, volleyball net, and so much more. Also, the lady at the front was cute as a button!"

Brewery visits: The Sioux Falls KOA offers easy access to craft beer options. A visitor notes, "Also a neat little micro brewery walking distance, across the road. Very nice staff and an RV dealer next door."

What campers like

Well-maintained restroom facilities: Most Harrisburg area campgrounds feature clean washrooms with modern amenities. At Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, "There's both a shower house and vaulted toilets in the east area. Private tent sites: Big Sioux Recreation Area offers secluded tent camping options. "We had a tent site, number 24, and it was tucked into the woods but still close to the parking lot! The neighboring sites are far enough away where you still have privacy."

Family-friendly activities: Jellystone Park provides extensive programming for children. One visitor reports, "Great for kids! We had a slight issue with inconsiderate neighbors who kept driving their golf carts through our camp (which can happen anywhere) but otherwise it's a great place for families to camp."

Pet-friendly accommodations: RV parks near Harrisburg welcome dogs with designated exercise areas. A Sioux Falls KOA visitor mentioned, "The pet areas were awesome! In fact, Sioux Falls is a very dog-friendly city and was able to take my dog everywhere!"

What you should know

Reservation requirements: South Dakota state parks fill quickly during peak season. "Residents of South Dakota love their camping, so book a site as early as allowable. I would recommend the east campground. Very pretty."

Non-resident fees: Out-of-state visitors face additional charges at state recreation areas. "We had already paid the $30 a night plus $10 nonresident reservation fees, to find out starting this year we needed to pay a non-resident $15 a night state park fee or $60 for a year pass."

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity considerations: When camping with children, request sites near recreational areas. At Sioux Falls Yogi Bear, "Our family spent a long weekend here enjoying all of the activities they had to offer. Everything from laser tag to chocolate milk chugging contests. The sites were extremely well maintained."

Swimming options for hot days: Lake Vermillion offers water recreation but check conditions first. "There is a very nice sand beach, playgrounds, fishing, star gazing, and four campgrounds. I would not camp at the west side north area since it is very new and has very few trees."

Unique camping accommodations: Several parks offer alternatives to traditional tent/RV setups. One family reported, "We stayed in the TeePee and it was definitely an experience our family will cherish forever. Awesome staff as well."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for convenience: Choose appropriate spots based on your setup and plans. Site spacing considerations: Parker RV Campground offers varying levels of site separation. "This is a very nice stop over. Sites 1-4 have water, electric (50, 30, 15 amp) and sewer. Those sites go for $25.00 per day. Sites 5-6 are electric only and are in full sun. Site 7 is electric but has a sewer site as well. Shade found in sites 1-4."
