Dog-Friendly Campgrounds Around Badlands National Park

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping offers free pet-friendly sites with panoramic views of Badlands National Park. Located approximately 6 miles south of Wall, South Dakota, this BLM land provides spacious camping areas where pets can accompany their owners without additional fees. Several dispersed camping options exist in the area, including Badlands Boondocking Area and Sage Creek Basin Camp, all allowing pets. Cedar Pass Campground within Badlands National Park and Badlands Hotel & Campground in Interior also welcome pets with standard leash policies. These pet-friendly campgrounds provide excellent options for campers who don't want to leave their four-legged companions behind while exploring the stunning Badlands landscape. The sites along Buffalo Gap ridge provide excellent cell service despite their remote setting, making it easy for campers to research nearby pet services if needed. Bighorn sheep frequently visit the camping areas in the mornings, so pets should be properly secured.

The exposed ridge location of Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping creates extremely windy conditions that pet owners must prepare for when visiting with animals. Secure tent stakes are essential as gusts can be powerful enough to damage camping equipment. No fires are permitted in many dispersed camping areas due to wind and fire danger concerns. Most sites fill quickly by mid-afternoon, especially during peak season, with the best spots typically vacant by 10am and occupied again by 4pm. The dirt access road can become rutted after rain, though most vehicles can navigate it by driving carefully. The camping area provides access to hiking opportunities throughout Buffalo Gap National Grassland, where pets must be kept under control due to wildlife presence and grazing cattle in the surrounding areas.

    Badlands Boondocking Area

Awesome views of the Badlands and Buffalo Gap Grasslands

Wall Dispersed Camping near Badlands National Park is a great spot for anyone looking to boondock with awesome views and a peaceful atmosphere. The location offers a unique contrast— rugged rock formations on one side and the wide-open grasslands of the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands on the other.

To get there, take the Wall Exit off I-90 and head south. Watch for the two radio towers— that's where you'll turn into the camping area. Once you turn in, don't be afraid to explore north(left) to look for spots. We wished we had driven around first and picked the best site instead of stopping early— there were definitely some better spots farther down. Campsites are marked with signs to help keep space between campers, which is a nice touch for privacy. T-Mobile service worked well during our stay. It can get very windy, so come prepared— and don’t be surprised if you’re sharing the area with a herd of cattle. It’s all part of the experience. A great free camping option with incredible scenery.

    Sleepy Hollow Campground

    A Place to Stay

The campground is fine. FHU with cable. $65 might be steep but,....

You can walk to Wall Drug Store if you are so inclined.

Plenty of space to walk the dogs.

8 miles from Badlands National Park entrance.

COMPLAINT - not the parks fault but....they were/are doing construction on the railroad crossing that prevents you from following your navigation guide. The detour signs are terrible or non-existent. We drove down a street with cars parked on both sides, and found ourselves at road closed even thought we could see the park. We had to call and ask how to get into the park.

    Great Sites, Recently built up

This is a great location for camping. They recently built up this campsite with gravel and wood logs for more defined sites. There is about 20 sites here and most can fit long RVs. Just 2 miles from Badlands National Park. Unbeatable and one of the best free sites we have seen in all our travels. We pulled in about 6 pm and had lots of sites to pick from. Highly recommend.

    Sage Creek Campground

    Easy, breezy, beautiful

The other reviewers had it right. Sage Creek is a sweet little spot within Badlands National Park. Definitely pay your park entrance fee! BUT it’s true - this spot is completely free. Lots of people dig this spot. Doesn’t feel too crowded though. Tons of tents, vans, and car campers fit into this somewhat small but open space. Bison are common visitors. Plus, there is a prairie dog town right in the center of the loop the road creates in the camp. They are so fascinating to watch! There are two basic but clean restrooms. Several pic nic tables with small shade shelters. A nearby creek for water filtering / road trip baths. Make sure to bring lots of water or a filter people! We saw folks asking around for extra water. Be prepared. Definitely would highly recommend for anyone traveling through South Dakota. Badlands National Park is so unique and so special.

    Badlands / White River KOA

    Nice KOA

This was our first time at a KOA. Stayed for 2 nights to explore the Badlands. The campground was large and very close/convenient to Badlands National Park . I appreciated that they had the option of purchasing dinner or breakfast at their cafe. Hosts and staff are very friendly. They had a huge dog park that our pups loved. Sites were close together and just ok from an aesthetic standpoint. Looked like a good campground if you have children - lots of activities and a pool. I am only giving 4 stars because one of our party is in a wheelchair and he had to go all the way to the back of the campground where the tent camping was to access an ADA bathroom/shower. And there were only 2 of those available - they are the regular showers for the tent campers. Otherwise, if you aren’t handicapped it is a good choice. Especially if you have dogs. Oh, and watch out for mosquitos. They do spray for them

    Badlands Dispersed Camping

    Amazing free views

We camped on the public lands just outside of Badlands National Park and it was amazing. The camping is dispersed and free, with no amenities, but the scenery more than makes up for it. You’re perched on the edge of the Badlands with jaw-dropping views.

We had tons of space to spread out even though there were other campers nearby, it didn’t feel crowded at all. The sunsets and sunrises are absolutely incredible, and the night sky was full of stars.

There’s no water, restrooms, or trash services, so make sure to come prepared and pack everything out. We camped in early july, and the weather was warm and breezy. It’s also super close to Wall and the Badlands National Park entrance, so it’s a perfect spot for easy day trips into the park.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a scenic, budget-friendly place to camp with wide-open skies and a real sense of adventure.

Guide to Badlands National Park

Buffalo Gap National Grassland offers dispersed camping options with direct views into Badlands National Park. Located along the north rim of the Badlands Wall, these sites sit at elevations around 2,800 feet above sea level. Temperature variations between day and night can exceed 40 degrees, particularly from May through September when summer thunderstorms frequently develop in late afternoon.

What to do

Stargazing at night: The minimal light pollution at Cedar Pass Campground provides exceptional night sky viewing. "The stars were gorgeous and the sunrise was unrivaled," notes Blake R., who camped with a tent. Park rangers also conduct evening astronomy programs for visitors.

Wildlife watching at dawn: Morning hours offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities across the grassland and park boundaries. "We heard some coyotes getting caught up in something in the middle of the night but the whole family loved it," reports Josh Z. from The Wall Boondocking area. Bighorn sheep, bison herds, and prairie dogs are commonly spotted during early morning hours.

Visit Wall Drug: Located just a short distance from Sleepy Hollow Campground, this famous tourist stop provides a break from camping. "A place to spend a night. Level & did not have to unhook. Full hookups & cable," mentions Julie A. The campground is within walking distance of Wall's attractions.

What campers like

Spacious dispersed sites: The Wall Boondocking Dispersed camping area provides ample space between designated camping spots. "Plenty of sites available! Not too far from the national park or from a town. No matter what site your at it is breathtaking!!" writes Chloe T. Most sites can accommodate various camping setups from tents to larger RVs.

Accessibility despite remoteness: Many dispersed camping areas near the Badlands remain accessible to standard vehicles. "My Civic made it up the rough roads with no issue, we just had to drive around some potholes!" shares Anna H. about Buffalo Gap National Grassland. Most dirt access roads remain navigable for passenger cars except after heavy rainfall.

Convenient location: Camping sites along the rim provide quick access to park attractions. "Very close to the Badlands park," confirms Haley S. about Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping. This proximity allows campers to easily reach hiking trails and visitor centers without long commutes.

What you should know

Extreme weather preparation: Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F while dropping significantly after sunset. "Tent camping will keep you up at night, the storms bring heavy rain/wind that makes your vehicle feel as if it's going to tip over," warns D0min0 3. at The Wall Boondocking Dispersed camping.

Arrival timing matters: Most dispersed camping areas fill quickly during peak season. "Arrived Friday May 30, 2025 about 4:30pm a little less than a dozen designated sites remaining," reports James S. Arriving before mid-afternoon increases your chances of securing preferred spots.

Limited amenities: Badlands Boondocking Area and other dispersed sites provide no water, toilets, or trash facilities. "Great views until a camp weenie parks directly in front of you where no motor vehicles are permitted due to restoration efforts," notes Mercuric M., highlighting the importance of following land use restrictions and packing out all waste.

Tips for camping with families

Secure equipment thoroughly: Family tents and shade structures require extra anchoring in this high-wind area. "Make sure to use stakes for your tent though because the wind is wild," advises Blake R. Larger rocks may be needed to reinforce standard tent stakes in the hard prairie soil.

Bring ample water supplies: With no drinking water available at dispersed sites, family camping requires careful planning. "No amenities but if you bring plenty of water, you'll be great," recommends Elizabeth A., who also suggests bringing extra for cooling off during hot days.

Consider established campgrounds: Families with small children may prefer Badlands Hotel & Campground for its amenities. "Grounds were neat and tidy but showers could be cleaner and updated. All in all, not bad," notes Michelle F. The campground also features a pool and playground for children.

Tips from RVers

Level sites available: Most dispersed areas offer relatively flat parking for RVs and trailers. "Great for RVs, trailers, or tents," confirms Anna H. about Buffalo Gap National Grassland. Leveling blocks may still be needed for longer stays or larger rigs.

Plan for waste disposal: With no dump stations at dispersed sites, RVers need to manage holding tanks. "The dump station is situated by another loop that has the same wide spot in the road sites," warns Jeff G. at Badlands / White River KOA, noting that maneuvering can be challenging during busy periods.

Generator etiquette: While generators are allowed at some sites, neighboring campers appreciate consideration. "Your music and generators will affect others," reminds Staci I. about Buffalo Gap National Grassland, where sound travels easily across the open terrain.
