Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Chadron, NE

Chadron State Park Campground accommodates pets at both RV and tent sites with 70 electric and 18 primitive camping spots available. The campground maintains clean, pet-accessible facilities with well-kept grounds regularly checked by camp hosts and park staff. Campsites feature fire rings and picnic tables where pets can remain with their owners during meals and evening activities. Nearby hiking trails welcome leashed dogs with multiple trail options ranging from level paths to steep inclines through rugged terrain. Pets must stay leashed throughout the park to protect local wildlife, including deer and numerous bird species frequently spotted in the area. The spacious sites in the upper loop offer more distance between neighbors than the lower section, providing additional privacy for campers with active dogs.

Pine Ridge Dispersed Camping allows free, pet-friendly camping within 300 feet of Forest Service road 714-A, directly above Chadron State Park. This 1.5-mile dirt road offers stunning views and access to numerous hiking trails where dogs can explore on-leash. The road remains accessible through the State Park which does not lock gates overnight. Limited suitable RV parking exists with only a couple of viable spots along the road due to drainage ditches and "No Motor Vehicles" markers on visible side spurs. Tent campers with dogs have more flexibility, with short walks available to spectacular views along the rim of Pine Ridge. Roberts Tract Camping Area provides another pet-friendly option with clean sites featuring fire pits and picnic tables. The area experiences seasonal changes, with some land occasionally under cattle lease that may affect camping availability during certain times.

    Kemo Sabay Campground & Storage

    Sunrise Campground

This camp is under new management and is now called Sunrise. It’s a GREAT spot for going to Hot Springs and Wind Cave National Park.

There’s a great dog park on this campground with a doggie clean up station. Plenty of sites and shade. We stayed just one night but would be back for sure.

    Chadron State Park Campground

Perfect place for a picnic or spending the night

Chadron State park is located just a few miles south of Chadron, NE. There are many nice picnic areas throughout the park, some big enough to host large groups. They also offer cabins to rent if you plan on staying the night. Drive through the park and you can enter in to Nebraska national forest which has amazing views out to the prairies and farm land below. One of the best places to watch the sunset!

    Bordeaux Wildlife Management Area

    Great for overnight parking

Google maps will lead you right to the area. It's next to a busy road. Nebraska 20, Bridges to Buttes Byway. Enough parking for several rigs if parked close. I was the only rig there on a Thursday. It's only a few miles from a Super Walmart and a Safeway, in Chadron.

    Nebraska National Forest at Chadron

    Awesome hiking!

Factoid: When I stayed here I learned that the Nebraska National Forest is manmade! It is the largest hand planted forest in the US. it felt like a green oasis in the “desert" of Western Nebraska!

I spent 3 days hiking in this Forest and enjoyed every minute on each trail. This area has such differing geography. I’d begin the hike in the Forest, climb up to the ridge and catch views all the way into the vast, flat Buffalo National Grasslands area.

My home base was in Chadron State Park where I camped. The park itself has 6 miles of hiking trails which connect with several other trails in the Nebraska National Forest. The video is a section of the Black Hills Overlook Trail in the National Forest. A definite must! There was evidence of old wildfires on the western slopes, but otherwise the lodgepole pine trees were beautiful. Steamboat Butte Trail is another good hike.

Chadron State Park is located in the Nebraska National Forest off Hwy 385 south of the town of Chadron which has a Walmart for supplies. The park has pretty much everything: a fishing pond, A trading post for basic camp supplies and some food, swimming pool, seasonal horseback trail rides, archery range, tennis court, disc golf, sand volleyball, horseshoe pits, softball field, playground, AC/heated cabins, group camping with a group lodge,  and campsites with 30 amp HU, no water so fill up at the bathrooms and there’s a dump station on site.

The site I was in was level, but there was no shade. Shade trees are sparse in the area where I was camped. It was quiet and the stars were great at night, and made for a good home base from which to hike in the Nebraska National Forest.

    Hidden Lake Campground and Resort

    We Enjoyed Our Stay

We were told through an email from the campground(CG) that there was road construction in town with length restrictions. Between the CG instructions and looking at Google Maps, we found an easy route around the construction and arrived with no issues. Check-in was quick and easy. There’s a$3.50 CG fee along with tax. This is a small CG so finding pull-through site 5 with FHUs was not an issue. There was however a tree on our door side that was a potential problem for our slide-out, but the camp host came by and made a suggestion to place our 39’ 5th wheel at the back of the site so slides etc. did not get involved with the tree. The site was plenty long enough for our RV and F450. The water and electric are towards the back and there are two sewer connections, one in the middle and the other at the back that’s handy. Currently, there is no WiFi or cable television. There are essentially no OTA channels but we had a clear shot of the southern sky for satellite. We got 2 bars each on Verizon and T-Mobile. The sites here are very close together. The back-ins do provide a little more site spacing but in the big scheme of things not enough to make a difference. There is no formal dog park but plenty of areas to walk your dog to include an off-leash area on the other side of the small lake. You can also fish(catch& release) in the lake if you purchase a CG license. There’s a flock of wild turkeys that wander around the campground plus mule deer here and there.

    Pine Ridge Dispersed Camping

Gorgeous northwest Nebraska boondocking with a view

We're in the midst of a week in our 26' travel trailer along this beautiful 1.5 mile-long dirt Forest Service road 714-A, directly above Chadron State Park. We're guessing that most folks who stay in the State Park campground below are unaware that dispersed camping is indeed permitted within 300 feet of the center line of this road, for even though the popular State Park campground remains closed for another day due to a delayed COVID-19 opening, and is booked solid thereafter, there's absolutely no one else camping up here!

You actually have to drive through the State Park to access FR-714-A, and the park does not lock their gate overnight so access remains unrestricted. The road is in excellent shape and negotiable by any trailer or motorhome, but is only a single lane wide. We're 700 feet of elevation above the plains below, with stunning views stretching off to the horizon. Much of this area has burned in the past, but the area where we're camping is lush and grassy with some stately pines around. This isn't the Nebraska that you know!

Cell service on Verizon is a solid 3+ bars - 54ms ping, 13.6 Mbps down, 3.5 Mbps up. The Verizon tower is visible about 5 miles to the south of our campsite.

There are numerous hiking trails that depart from either end of FR-714-A, including some in the State Park. Fresh water, an RV dump and a camp store are all located within the park, along with an archery range, sledding hill, fishing pond, playgrounds, picnic areas and more.

One star is deducted only because:

    • There are only a couple of sites that would work with a vehicle, for there's a well-hidden drainage ditch dug on each side of the road; and
    • There's a bit of daytime traffic due to people accessing the hiking trailhead at the end of the road. Vehicles are forced to camp right along the road, as any side spurs visible on satellite imagery have been marked "No motor vehicles" by the Forest Service. For tent campers, though, it's a short walk right to the rim of Pine Ridge for even more spectacular views.

The phone number provided is for the Nebraska National Forest Pine Hill Ranger District in Chadron, in whose jurisdiction this road resides.

Red Cloud (Ne) Nebraska Nf — Nebraska National Forests And Grasslands

    Well kept small campground

Well kept small campground. Clean pit toilets, no water. Beautiful trees and great birds! We were the only ones there mid July, mid week. Good for a one night stay away from the hubbub of Chadron SP. Only downside is the noise from the road.

    Q's Dairy Sweet

Open when others campgrounds are closed, and the food is shockingly good

I rated this high, because of the activities, wilderness, and beauty around Crawford and the food and the availability of the campground when all else is closed, made it worth it.  Also, you can use the Dairy Sweety's rest room, WiFi and the close proximity to the highway, and a convenient store all must count for something.  But as a campsite itself, it has hookups and is affordable, otherwise it is a parking area behind a Cafe.

Crawford has so much going for it.  We went to camp and catch trout.  Unfortunately, due to COVID and wet weather, even grassland boondocking was forbidden.  A local pointed us to the dairy sweet.  Behind the Dairy sweet she has 4 hookups and room for about 6 campers.  We set up late and just got food there- WOW!

This is one of those places that aren't anything to look at but put amazing food on your plate!  The beef is locally raised.  The Ruben I had had thick slabs of corned beef they process themselves.  The BBQ I had on my last day could have fed a small village.

While their visit Fort Rob, but don't miss Sowbelly Canyon, Toadstool SP, and the Museum of the Fir Trader in Neighboring Chadron. AND if you can, enter Crawford from the South, you will be glad you did.

One of my favorite towns in Nebraska is Harrison.  It is the largest town in Sioux County which is itself larger than the state of Delaware.  Do you want to guess the second largest town in Sioux?  There is no other town in Sioux County!  That is how remote this area is…enjoy.

Guide to Chadron

Chadron sits within Nebraska's Pine Ridge region at roughly 3,500 feet elevation, where the landscape transitions from rolling plains to pine-covered buttes and ridge formations. Summer temperatures range from 50-90°F, with winter lows often dipping below freezing. Most campgrounds remain open from April through November, though some offer year-round availability with reduced services in winter months.

What to do

Hiking trails for dogs: Several Chadron State Park Campground trails accommodate leashed pets, from beginner routes to more challenging terrain. "The views from here include cliffs, prairie/grassland, rolling hills, waterways and little lakes, and amazing sunrises & sunsets. Close to historic Ft. Robinson and other national forests and grasslands," notes reviewer Dan N.

Fishing opportunities: Box Butte Reservoir provides access to various fish species. "Great fishing and boat lake, but imo i prefer sandy beach for swimming. Needs more electrical sites," mentions Michelle S. The reservoir attracts both serious anglers and families looking for recreational fishing.

Historical sites: Fort Robinson State Park offers numerous historical attractions. "There are tons of hiking trails in the park, from 'easy' up to 'hard'. There are also jeep tours, short and long horseback trail rides, stagecoach rides, chuckwagon meals, breakfast or dinner among the nearby buttes," explains Pam R., highlighting options beyond standard camping activities.

What campers like

Diverse accommodations: Roberts Tract Camping Area provides basic amenities for those seeking simplicity. "We loved staying here this place was awesome. We will be back for sure. The sites were clean and had a fire pit," reports Jesse S., reflecting the area's appeal for primitive camping enthusiasts.

Pet-friendly atmosphere: Dog friendly campgrounds near Chadron typically offer specific amenities for pet owners. "This is a beautiful area in Northwest Nebraska. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained. There's a couple good hikes and a swimming pool," writes Laurie L., noting the well-maintained facilities appreciated by campers traveling with pets.

Solitude options: Many campers appreciate Pine Ridge Dispersed Camping for its remoteness. "We're in the midst of a week in our 26' travel trailer along this beautiful 1.5 mile-long dirt Forest Service road 714-A, directly above Chadron State Park... there's absolutely no one else camping up here!" reports Marc G., highlighting the unexpected privacy despite proximity to popular areas.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Campsites around Chadron experience significant seasonal changes. "We come here every year for the Chadron Fur Trade Days, and there were plenty of campsites open, which is awesome because Fur Trade Days draws a big crowd," notes Ryan S., mentioning an annual event that affects camping availability.

Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds near Chadron accept both reservations and walk-ins. "You can reserve sites online but must be 3-4 Days out but we just show up each year and are always able to find a nice spot," adds Ryan S., providing practical advice for securing a site.

Facility limitations: Walgren Lake State Rec Area offers basic amenities. "Great little primitive campground for people who like to do it on their own! where we stayed there was no hook ups or anything like that but it was beautiful!" explains Candy L., highlighting the trade-offs between amenities and natural setting.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer water recreation suitable for children. "Campground includes a swimming pool and sand volleyball," mentions Dan N., pointing out recreational facilities beyond hiking that appeal to families with children.

Playground access: Crawford City Park provides family-friendly facilities. "Great playground for kids," notes William B., making this location particularly appealing for those camping with younger children who need play spaces beyond natural exploration.

Educational opportunities: Fort Robinson State Park features numerous historical learning experiences. "There are loads of activities close by to do and see including historic sites, museum, swimming pool, fishing, Jeep rides, it's seriously endless!" shares Candy L., emphasizing the educational value alongside recreation.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Red Cloud Campground offers comprehensive services for larger rigs. "This is a full hookup (electric/water/sewer) campground, appears to be recently updated. Concrete pad, fairly level. Picnic table and grill in each site," reports Renee H., providing specific details about the pad surface and levelness.

Size limitations: Not all pet-friendly campgrounds near Chadron accommodate larger RVs. "We were worried about this place due to reviews but at the end we're glad we went as we needed only an overnight stay. It's easy to find the road that leads to the area but not so much to find the spot to feel comfortable to park with a trailer," explains Wild Berries B., highlighting navigation challenges for RVs.

Connectivity options: Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds. "Cell service on Verizon is a solid 3+ bars - 54ms ping, 13.6 Mbps down, 3.5 Mbps up. The Verizon tower is visible about 5 miles to the south of our campsite," notes Marc G., providing specific connection details crucial for RVers who need to stay connected.
