Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Union, SC

Sedalia Campground near Union features primitive camping that welcomes pets for $5 per night for single sites or $10 for group camping. This Forest Service campground provides running water and clean pit toilets in a secluded natural setting. The campground has several individual sites and a separate spacious grassy area for group camping with a communal fire pit. No picnic tables are available at the sites, so campers should bring their own. Hunters frequently use the campground during deer and turkey seasons, often filling the area to capacity during these times. Other pet-friendly options in the region include Croft State Park Campground, which offers RV and tent camping with water and electric hookups, along with shower facilities and sanitary dump stations.

Dogs can explore miles of trails throughout the Sumter National Forest surrounding Sedalia Campground, with the Palmetto Trail running directly through the campsite. The campground provides a quiet setting with a spacious grassy area in the middle perfect for dogs to exercise. During summer months, a refreshing creek accessible via trails offers pets a place to cool off. The primitive nature of the campground means pet owners should pack accordingly, bringing extra water for dogs and waste disposal bags as facilities are minimal. Despite being primitive, the vault toilets are exceptionally clean and well-maintained. Woods Ferry Campground, another Forest Service option, offers more secluded camping with facilities geared toward equestrian campers, though the area can become muddy after heavy rains.

    Dreher Island State Park Campground

    Camper Cabins R Great!

My bf and I rented a camper cabin-electricity, heat, air, bunkbeds + full bed…secluded from the rest of the park, located on its own loop, separate showers(2) + 3 stalls + changing room in the public restrooms…AND IT WAS ALL VERY CLEAN! Very helpful and friendly park rangers available, but not “in your face” 😉 We had a wonderful time! Kayaking, paddle boarding(both mine) and brought our boat to put in at their small, but efficient, Marina! Beautifully well kept grounds…but left to age untrained on ginormously stellar Lake Murray, South Carolina(Mid-state) I would HIGHLY recommend a visit/stay to this family, pet, everyone friendly State Park!!!

    Dreher Island State Park Campground

    Peaceful, but a little busy

This campground is a popular spot in South Carolina. Campsites are pretty close together but it's usually peaceful - lakeside sites, good fishing, but be prepared for the mosquitos!

    Dreher Island State Park Campground

    Family Adventures on Lake Murray

I loved how Dreher Island State Park in South Carolina gave our family the best of both safety and fun, with shaded, roomy sites that included picnic tables, fire rings and well-kept bathhouses that made camping easy with kids. The campground sits right on Lake Murray, so the kids spent hours swimming, skipping rocks and spotting herons, while short hiking trails gave them just enough adventure without wearing them out. With boat ramps, fishing spots and wide-open lake views, it felt like a true escape, yet I had peace of mind knowing everything was family-friendly and close by when we needed it. Evenings ended around the campfire with tired, happy kids and a beautiful lakeside sunset.  I would highly recommend this place!

    Awesome Visit & Stay

We love this campground and can not wait to go back. It is in a great location and has a great staff. The cleanest campground we’ve stayed at: laundry room, bathhouse, etc. Awesome play ground for all ages of children, two dog parks, ponds, level sites, etc. We stayed in March so the pool was not open but looking forward to visiting again soon.

    Great stopover place

We were here one night. CG is nice, they have some seasonal sites and a lot of other sites. There are some new sites along the pond on the lower level. They also had buddy sites, perfect for a 2+ campers to gather as a group. Nice dog park, nice playground.

    We would stay here again.

    GSP RV PARK

    Nice park, nice people

This is a well-maintained park with very friendly staff and guests. Spacious dog park, fresh gravel in the spots, fire pit area with string lights. We had a change of plans the morning of checkout, and they let us check out a little late since the park wasn’t fully booked, which was so helpful and kind of them. The park is centrally located near downtown Greer (very cute with lots of shops and restaurants) and a short drive from Greenville and Travelers Rest. We will definitely be back while passing through this area next time!

    Spacious Skies Peach Haven

    Nice campground, lots of amenities.

Overall, this is a very nice, clean park conveniently located to the interstate I-85) and attractions in the area. It has all the amenities you would expect to find at a KOA such as a swimming pool, playground, dog park, miniature golf, store, clubhouse, and more (including goats). It is by far the nicest private campground in the area that we have stayed at.

This KOA has 127 sites offering varying degrees of services to accommodate RV's, tents, and those wanting to rent cabins. We chose a 50-amp full hook-up back-in site but were upgraded to a pull-thru so we could be in a sunny location to mitigate the chilly air. How nice of them! Our site (#79) was perfectly level as were most others (but not all). Water, electric, and cable hook-ups were well placed at the site and worked fine. We paid $37/night(with the KOA member discount). Nice, large grassy area for dogs to walk and sniff and there is a decent size dog park.  Roads and pads are hard packed gravel with grass in between sites. Some sites are set in a wooded area while some are out in the open with plenty of sun and satellite coverage. The park is big rig friendly and the roads are easily navigable. All sites have a picnic table and some had fire pits but ours did not. Cable is included and offered over 50 channels. Wifi worked well at our site.  The laundry was small with three washers and three dryers but very clean and had a decent book exchange. The bathroom and showers were super clean and looked like they were updated recently.

The campground is extremely clean and the owners/employees are super friendly. There is a short hiking trail (less than a mile) through the woods and plenty of green space in front of some of the pull-thrus. playground large swimming pool with large deck putt putt with lots of goat humor.

The only downside would be the closeness of sites but that is pretty much what you expect from private RV parks. Fortunately, we did not have neighbors right next to us which gave us more space. I'm usually not a KOA fan but have to say this one was great for our overnight stay and we would recommend it.

Guide to Union

Primitive camping options near Union, South Carolina provide access to the surrounding Sumter National Forest at affordable rates. The region sits at the edge of the Piedmont region with elevations between 400-600 feet, creating a mix of rolling hills and creek valleys. Summer temperatures often reach 90°F with high humidity, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons.

What to do

Fishing access: At Chester State Park Campground, a 25-minute drive from Union, anglers can enjoy a stocked lake with minimal motorized boat traffic. "Nice access to the lake. Convenient to Charlotte metro area," notes Kevin A. The park rents kayaks and paddleboats for those without their own watercraft.

Disc golf course: Chester State Park offers a professional-level disc golf course on the grounds. "There is fishing, kayaks and canoes at the boat dock for rent and to our children's disappointment no swimming in the lake. The other side of the park has the boat dock, playgrounds for the kiddos and plenty of grassy areas and picnic tables for sitting by the lake. Also there is a professional disc golf course on site," shares Bill C.

Forest hiking: Brick House Campground provides direct access to looping forest trails. "There is a short hiking trail (less than a mile) through the woods and the palmetto trail runs right through there, so longer options are available," explains richardhoerz. Trails range from short loops to longer sections of the Palmetto Trail system.

What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Woods Ferry Campground offers primitive camping for equestrians with basic amenities. "It is off the beaten path, so it is quiet. Apparently, there had been a lot of rain recently, and the area showed it. Woods Ferry is a campground mainly for campers who have horses. There are corrals at many of the campsites," reports Myron C. Sites are available on a first-come basis.

Clean facilities: Even at primitive sites, campers appreciate the maintenance standards. At Brick House Campground, "Vault toilet was clean. There are a couple pull-through spots. We were the only campers there. $5 a spot," mentions Allyse. The campground receives regular ranger visits, with Robert D. noting, "This is a federal campsite. Rangers check the campsite every day and night."

Winter camping options: Croft State Park Campground remains open year-round with some campers preferring the off-season. "Very nice, secluded area. Our first camping, and in December, no less. Few campers, but spacious sites. I collect local fallen tree limbs to burn. Lots of them around! Great hiking trails, but most bike trails closed because of a bridge failure," shares Patrick L.

What you should know

Site limitations: At Kings Mountain State Park, approximately 50 minutes from Union, many sites need leveling work. "Many camping sites are very much in need of leveling. Sites slope from left to right, front to back, and some slope in both ways. Some sites are listed as RV sites but are half as large as they need to be to accommodate a medium size RV," warns Richard E.

Seasonal considerations: During hunting seasons, campgrounds fill quickly. At Sedalia Campground, "Quite calm. Hunters use it alot. Fall deer hunters spring thurkey hunting. Often gets packed," explains Wolf R. N. Consider booking well in advance during these periods.

Amenity variations: Not all campgrounds provide expected amenities. "Just be aware that there are no picnic tables. Still it's cheap and close to where we live in Spartanburg," mentions richardhoerz about Sedalia Campground. Some sites require campers to bring their own tables and other basic equipment.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Pine Ridge Campground offers extensive facilities for children. "Lots of stuff for the kids to do! Bath house clean and laundry facility great! We will definitely be back!" says Erica C. The campground includes a playground and recreational areas designed specifically for younger campers.

Pet-friendly hiking: For pet friendly camping near Union, South Carolina, Croft State Park accommodates four-legged family members. "Perfect for equestrian as most of the trails are horse friendly and there is a large arena free to use. The barn is clean as well and provides stall shavings for a small fee," shares Maddi P. Dogs must remain leashed on trails.

Swimming options: Families seeking water recreation should consider locations with designated swimming areas. "Saw some turtles while paddling, and there were frogs and lots of fireflies near our campsite. We enjoyed seeing the equestrian visitors too," says Sarah G. about Croft State Park, which offers paddling opportunities though no swimming in the lake.

Tips from RVers

Access challenges: RVers should research access roads carefully. "The road into the campground is narrow, hilly and windy. We were able to do it in our 32 foot class A, but luckily no one was coming the other direction," warns Karen S. about Kings Mountain State Park. Many forest service roads leading to primitive campgrounds can be challenging for larger rigs.

Utility placement: At Iron City Campground, site layouts accommodate larger RVs well. "Site was perfect for our 43' Motorhome and dolly. Would definitely stay again," reports Douglas T. However, at other campgrounds, utilities may be positioned awkwardly, requiring extra hose or cord length.

Seasonal RV activities: Winter camping in the Union area remains viable for RVers. "Very well taken care of campground. Vault toilet was clean. There are a couple pull-through spots. We were the only campers there," notes Allyse about winter camping at Brick House Campground, where the $5 nightly fee makes it economical for longer stays.
