    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Lake Hartwell dominates the camping landscape around Central, South Carolina, with multiple developed campgrounds providing waterfront access. Twin Lakes at Lake Hartwell offers spacious sites with direct lake views and swimming areas, while nearby state parks like Table Rock, Devils Fork, and Keowee-Toxaway provide a mix of tent camping, RV sites, and cabin rentals. The region includes several Corps of Engineers campgrounds with electric and water hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings. Most campgrounds accommodate both tent and RV camping, with some locations featuring more primitive options for those seeking a less developed experience.

Camping is available year-round at most sites near Central, with summer bringing higher temperatures and increased visitation, particularly during Clemson University events and football season. Several campgrounds require reservations, especially for premium waterfront sites which tend to fill quickly. The proximity to Clemson University significantly impacts campground availability, with many sites becoming difficult to secure during home football games and university events. Bathhouse facilities vary across locations, with some campgrounds offering modern amenities while others provide more basic services. As one camper noted, "Fall will be a busy time so if quiet is what you are after, I would be mindful of the Clemson home schedule."

Waterfront campsites receive consistently high ratings from visitors who appreciate the lake views and swimming access. Many sites feature private beach areas, boat access, and scenic sunset views over Lake Hartwell. A recent review noted, "We had a great weekend. The sites are large, very clean, and conveniently located. Each site has a fire pit, grill, and large picnic table." The campgrounds in the region balance natural beauty with convenient access to amenities, with most locations situated within a short drive to grocery stores and restaurants. Several visitors mentioned the peaceful atmosphere, particularly during weekdays and non-football season periods. Wildlife sightings, including skunks, are common at some campgrounds, adding to the natural experience but requiring appropriate food storage and awareness.

      Mount Pisgah Campground

      Tent Camping

All you might need for a night camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains! The drive there is part of the trip!Drinking water spouts located throughout campsites, with picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Basic camp bathrooms with running water to freshen up. Hike to Frying Pan trail if you have time!! About 4/5 miles total but worth the hike to the lookout tower.

      Soggy Boot Campground

      Great secluded spot

The spot I found wasn’t the same site I heard in the reviews. It was a peaceful stay near a creek. It looked like an opening on the other side of the creek if you crossed it but I wasn’t about that life that night lol it was late.

      Lake Rabun Beach Recreation Area

      Wonderful place

We have been here a few times and love it. The hosts are kind and check on everyone throughout the day. There is a lot of room between the camp sites. There is a lot to do in the area. The bathrooms are clean and grounds well maintained.

Black Rock Mountain State Park Campground

      Beautiful park with outstanding staff.

Enjoyed a week long stay in late July, being at a higher elevation the weather was great. Sunny and comfortable during the day and cool crisp evenings in the 60's.

The access road is a bit steep but wasn't too bad for our RAM 4x4 pulling a 21 ft. trailer.

There are some larger sites but many of them are on the short side so be sure to confirm it will be deep enough for your needs before reserving.

I have to give a big kudos for the volunteer camp hosts on site, one night at dark there was a storm/tornada watch issues and the hosts and park ranger went to every site and advised everyone to seek shelter in the bathhouses.

The storm passed in about an hour and everyone was safe, but it is GREAT to know that the staff responded in a professional manner to assure everyone's safety.

Loved our stay, everyone was friendly and pleasant, hope we can get back again soon.

      Mount Pisgah Campground

      Cool Change

Typical National Park Campground.Sites are small but spread apart. Not many that we could fit 28 foot Airstream .Clean restrooms and free showers. The rangers are very friendly. Very professional and helpful. The restaurant is great but you need to make a reservation.

      Tallulah Gorge State Park Campground

      Unexpected adventure

Originally intended to do some car camping after a day of hiking but I ended up reserving a camp site and grabbing a tent from a near by Walmart and I enjoyed every minute of it. This may not matter to most but it may matter to some...I am a black male and although I didn't see many people that looked like me, everyone was extremely friendly. Definitely got a lot more attention than I would have liked but at least I knew pple were looking out for me lol. Beautiful scenery, fun trails, fishing, a full outdoor experience.

      Peaceful Cove Campground

      Great little campground!

We rented Andy’s RV and had a great time! Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate until the end of our trip, but the camper was superb. Fully stocked with everything we needed - even the makings for s’mores. If you’re looking for a campground with lots of amenities, this is not for you. If you want a great, peaceful place to stay on the river, it’s perfect. Nearby attractions in Franklin and Cherokee. 5+ stars!!

      Black Forest Family Camping Resort

      Great for families

We absolutely loved our experience at Black Forest. The owners genuinely care about your stay. They were only about half full when we went so they suggested a couple different sites for us to be spaced out from other people for privacy. When we arrived at our site we called the desk and asked if we could actually move to the one right next to it and they said sure no problem. Even if you were right next to others there are trees for at least a visual barrier at most sites. And you are fully in the woods so it isn’t that RV park feel. The bathhouses are clean and well maintained. The store at the check-in has everything you may have forgotten and the prices are actually reasonable. This place is very close to the restaurants on cedar mountain, less than 10 minute drive to everything. This was our first trip with our new 29ft camper trailer and I was nervous about backing into the site, but the way they have them set up you have plenty of room so it’s easy. The internet was a little spotty so we weren’t able to work remotely as planned but for us it wasn’t a big deal and we had enough cell service to send texts here and there. I read that the pool is heated but it was pretty cold!! But the weather was very hot when we were here so we didn’t mind that at all, we loved the pool.

    Guide to Central

Camping near Central, South Carolina centers primarily around Lake Hartwell and Lake Keowee, with water-based activities forming the core camping experience. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting shoreline access at many lakefront sites. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions in the 60-80°F range with lower precipitation.

    What to do

Kayaking accessible waters: Twin Lakes at Lake Hartwell provides direct water access for paddlers. "We loved staying here for a birthday weekend. Dog friendly, right on the water, clean restrooms. We stayed at a primitive site and will definitely be back. It was mostly very quiet with the exception of some boats engines or playing music during the day," notes Sydney W.

Hiking mountain trails: Table Rock State Park offers multiple trail options within a 30-minute drive. "The Table Rock trail is a must if you are nearby! It is pretty strenuous especially if you have health issues but is well worth the trek to the top. Just make sure that if you hike during the winter to give yourself plenty of time to finish the trail," advises Maggie J.

Fish local waters: Oconee Point on Lake Hartwell provides excellent fishing opportunities. "We camped lakefront on hartwell. Had a very large point all to ourselves. The site was super clean, had a fire pit, grill, full service hook-up. Plenty of parking, and the site was situated in a dead end cul-de-sac," reports Lori W.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: "The sites were immaculate, and more private/better shielded than other campgrounds. The waterfront aspect was completely charming. The water and electric hookups worked perfectly, the fire pit had been cleaned out and was easy to use," notes Mariah M. about Twin Lakes at Lake Hartwell.

Multi-lake access: Camping near Central provides access to both Lake Hartwell and Lake Keowee. "In the park, you can swim, hike, camp, fish and kayak. You will see some excellent views of the mountain ranges. We saw deer, squirrels, birds, snakes, and many salamanders," says John B. about the region's natural diversity.

Primitive camping options: Keowee-Toxaway State Park offers more secluded options. "We kayaked in our inflatables a short way across the lake to our primitive camping site which included nearby firewood that we could collect and use in a provided firepit area and used the large tree trunks as seating. The site overlooked the water and had a good amount of privacy/space from the other campers," describes Nichole W.

    What you should know

Site selection matters: "This spot is the highest on the third 'island' out from the mainland. It has epic 360 views. But, a lot of tree canopy and it is dirt/gravel. While the spot is very level, be very weary that the drive up to this spot is steep and curved, We barely made clearance with a 23' trailer that has a lift kit on it," cautions Adam V. about Mile Creek County Park.

Reserve well in advance: Most waterfront sites book quickly, especially during summer. "Huge campground near Clemson. The best spots are hard to get unless you reserve way ahead of time. Plenty of amenities and most sites are lakefront," advises John R.

Weather preparedness: Summer heat can be intense. "All we could have wished for was a breeze, it was stifling hot (95+)," reports one camper. Spring and fall typically offer more comfortable camping conditions with temperatures in the 70-80°F range.

    Tips for camping with families

Child-friendly swimming areas: "The swimming area was nice and the playgrounds were sadly closed but definitely would have been enjoyed by my kids! Overall it was quiet and relaxing," mentions a visitor about Twin Lakes facilities designed for younger campers.

Campground amenities for kids: "This is a very family friendly site that is always a favorite. The lake isn't the cleanest but it's great for boating, kayaking, and paddle boarding," notes Maddi P., highlighting the water recreation options for children.

Kid-friendly hikes: Devils Fork State Park offers easier trails suitable for families. "Jocassee state park in Devils Fork is awesome for the family! Lots of water activities. The area is clean. We had an awesome stay!" says Marlene V. about the family-oriented recreation opportunities.

    Tips from RVers

Site limitations: "While the spot is very level, be very weary that the drive up to this spot is steep and curved. We barely made clearance with a 23' trailer that has a lift kit on it. This spot requires backup skills and the right equipment," warns an experienced RVer about navigating certain campsites.

Hookup variations: "Sites have 50/30/20 amp electric service and water, pads are level packed gravel, each having a picnic table and fire ring. Many sites offer direct water access right in front of the site," notes Windell S., detailing the amenities available for RV campers.

Electronic connectivity: "Had 5G access entire time and easy to do business as digital nomads," reports one camper, though signal strength varies significantly by campground location and provider.
