Cabin rentals in the Pocono region near Rowland, Pennsylvania range in elevation from 1,300 to 1,800 feet, contributing to cooler summer temperatures than surrounding lowlands. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing from November through March, making heated cabin options essential for cold-weather stays. The region's mixed hardwood forests provide vibrant fall colors, typically peaking in mid-October.
What to do
Water activities on multiple lakes: At Pickerel Point Campground, campers can access clear water for various activities. "The lake is crystal clear and the beach is spotless. You absolutely have to bring a kayak/inflatable boat, but if you don't own one, don't worry, you can rent one," notes a visitor who appreciated the water recreation options.
Winter activities: Promised Land State Park cabins remain accessible during colder months, offering winter recreation opportunities. "This was my second visit in the cold months. Sites have electric but no water. Spigot close by... The park is large with many hiking trails and ice fishing," shares one winter visitor.
Hiking trail access: High Point State Park offers multiple trail options directly from cabin areas. "The site was maybe a 50-yard walk-in and we barely heard anyone around us and had a real wilderness feel. We fit in a hike up to the Appalachian Trail from our campsite, swam at the pond (Lake Marcia), and got in a fishing session at Steeny Kill Lake."
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the space and seclusion at Stokes State Forest cabins. "The cabins are reasonably priced and well-appointed, if a bit rustic. The interior features are just what you'd expect for getting away for the weekend. The main room has a bunk bed and two twins, a table with benches, two Adirondack chairs, a wood stove set into a fireplace."
Kitchen amenities: Cabins with cooking facilities are popular for longer stays. "The cabins are reasonably priced and well-appointed... hot/cold water, electric stove with oven, refrigerator, toilet, bathroom sink, mirror, plenty of hooks to hang jackets and coats, storage cabinets in the kitchen area, overhead lighting, wall outlets, and screened windows."
Lake views: Many cabins offer direct water views. "I spent the night in the Promised Land State Park at Pickerel Point and it was so pretty and quiet. There was a bathroom with flush toilets nearby and the campsites were well spaced apart. Mine overlooked the water and had a gorgeous sunset."
What you should know
Winter heating requirements: When renting cabins during colder months, come prepared with extra firewood. "You'll need that wood stove to heat up the cabin. Turning on the oven is a help, but not a good solution. The wood stove definitely heats the room up nicely. I went through two bundles of wood in one night, and could have used more in the morning."
Cabin layout variations: Lower Lake Campground Beechwood Area offers different cabin configurations. "We stayed in lower lake beechwood site 323. Was decent site only downside was fire pit area was very un-level for camping chairs, otherwise it's a nice wooded site with privacy. Short walk to bathrooms, showers and lake."
Limited cell service: Communication can be spotty in cabin areas. "The only negative is that I had almost no cell reception with Verizon," notes one winter visitor to Promised Land State Park.
Supply delivery: Some campgrounds offer firewood delivery service directly to your cabin. "They deliver wood right to your campsite," reports a visitor to Secluded Acres Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Otter Lake Camp Resort offers structured programs for children. "They have an overabundance amount of activities scheduled for campers. You are able to camp in tents in the activity field or lakeside. They offer rented cabins/houses and RVs."
Safety considerations: Bear activity requires proper food storage at cabins. "Do not leave any food out be sure to lock up everything in car. Camp sites were nice most had plenty of trees for privacy but were still kind of close. Pet sites looked to have more space."
Swimming options: Multiple water access points for children exist throughout the region. "My kids really loved having a pool to swim in, in addition to the lake. The bathrooms were the cleanest we've ever experienced at a campground."
Bike-friendly cabin areas: Some campgrounds feature paved roads ideal for children's bicycles. "Love that the road is paved, it makes it easy for the kids to ride bikes, skate etc... We will definitely be back."
Tips from RVers
Site variations for different needs: Kittatinny Campground offers a mix of cabin and RV options. "They have sites right on the lake. The bathrooms aren't the greatest but overall it's a beautiful place."
Full hookup availability: Many cabin areas also accommodate RVs with complete services. "I loved being lakefront with full hook up. Such a beautiful and peaceful place. The campsites are kinda close together so if you don't like meeting new people you may not like it but we had nice neighbors so didn't mind."
Winter storage options: Some locations offer seasonal cabin rental alongside RV storage. "Lake Mocatek Campground is well kept, on beautiful lake Mocatek and an absolute gem. They offer seasonal, winter storage and by the day rates, welcoming everything from tents to large Motorhomes."
Reservation timing: Popular cabin locations book quickly, especially for prime seasons. "Love this place. Other than the way they book for the next season (it's not at the time of your trip), this place is well kept. Very shaded sites. Have been going for years and will continue."
