Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Rices Landing, PA

Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park designates specific pet-friendly areas on Ivy Road and Hickory Road for campers with dogs. The campground offers tent sites, RV spots with electric hookups, and cabin options that accommodate pets. Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA features a large open dog park where pets can exercise off-leash, making it popular with dog owners traveling through the region. Raccoon Creek State Park maintains two pet-friendly camping loops—Loop F with electric sites and Loop B for more primitive camping. Sites in the pet loops are typically arranged around open fields with trees along the perimeter, providing shade while allowing space for dogs to move around. Campers note that pet-friendly bathhouses are cleaned daily but may be located some distance from the furthest campsites.

Hiking trails accessible directly from many pet-friendly campgrounds provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs. Laurel Hill State Park's pet loop mixes tent camping with RV sites around a central field, though some campers mention the lack of privacy compared to the non-pet loops situated in more wooded areas. Most campgrounds enforce leash requirements throughout the property, with Coopers Rock State Forest specifically requiring pets to remain leashed at all times while on trails or in camping areas. Quiet hours starting at 9pm are strictly enforced at state park campgrounds, with rangers particularly vigilant about noise levels and alcohol restrictions. Temperature variations in the region can be significant, with summer highs making shaded sites essential for pets. Campers should note that while most parks welcome pets, many restrict them from swimming areas, beaches, and certain trails during peak season.

    Hickory Hollow Campground

A new favorite quick getaway for me and the wife

This campground checks all our boxes. Beautiful scenery, quiet location, spacious campsites, full RV hookups, well-placed fire rings, dog park, nice large bathhouses, polite staff, and Wi-Fi that works.

This is located about an hour away from my home, so we plan on making this our go-to for quick camping getaways throughout the year.

Highly recommended. Definitely worth checking out.

    Hickory Hollow Campground

    Wow!

This may be the first campground I give a 10 out of 10! All the amenities your could want, it's clean, sites are leveled, it's maintained beautifully, there are cows in the distance, fully stocked store, friendly staff. Laundry, bathrooms, fairly spacious sites, a pool, dog park. Very, very nice.

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Pet friendly campsite, with electric

While most of the campgrounds in the park are no pets- there are 2 loops that allow your furry companions! Loop F includes electric spots! Loved seeing the 'neighbors' dogs get excited and curious when I walked my 4-legged best friend around the site. Clean area , close to a modern bathroom (a few stalls & even 2 showers!) Looking forward to going back at the end of the month.

    Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA

    Awesome staff!

Very conveniently located off the interstate. Follow the signs to the campground NOT the GPS in order to avoid some narrow and sharp turn roads. Staff were super friendly! Front desk staff were knowledgeable and and helpful. We had some issues with our power, and Larry was at our site within minutes to fix it. Big open dog park! There are only a few shaded spots. Spot width was a little narrow where we stayed (on the hill), but perfect for a quick overnight stay. Bathrooms were fairly clean, laundry was nice. The pool looked very well maintained.

    Hickory Hollow Campground

    Soooo spacious!

I was the only tenter at the time of my stay; had the whole place to myself. The sites are spread far apart and wooded. Table and fire rings are at each site. They have a brand new bath house which was spotless and a well kept dog park for the furs. If desired, there is a group campsite and the use of a pavilion too. The camp store if beautiful and has everything in it should you forget something. I’ll definitely be back.

    Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Nice state park with a lake

Stayed 3 nights because I wanted to be centrally located to the he Flight 93 Memorial and Falling Water (about 30 miles to each). The non pet section is heavily wooded and very shady. The pet section is more of a loop set up with some trees. The no pet section had no, zero, zilch cell service so my stay was super quiet. Site 173 was easy to back into and had a large picnic area with a fire ring next to the brook. There is a lake with a small beach and a boat launch and numerous hiking trails. The park will s very nice pretty and during the week fairly empty. I would recommend

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

Let a Local Give You The Scoop!

In the past 5 years, I've made 13 trips to Raccoon Creek State Park and spent 16 nights in a tent there. It is my local state park and I can tell you lots about it.

The D loop is really great tent camping at Raccoon Creek State Park. It's tents only, no RVs. So it gets a really fun, party vibe on Saturday nights during the summer. There's a trail right to the beach near the D loop, so it's a great place for families to go with pets. The sites are big, wooded, and all close to the bathroom.

The C loop, however, doesn't take pets (which stinks). When we have our dogs with us, we gravitate towards the C loop. It's fine, but it's not as fun as the D loop.

When we don't make a reservation and we have our dog, we end up in the F loop. It's not our preference (but--let's be clear--even the worst site in the F loop is better than NO trip!).

    Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Be Sure to Pick the Right Loop

There are two main loops in this campground. One that is pet friendly and more of a pitch-your-tent-in-the-yard thing and another that is pet-free and wooded. We didn't realize and stayed in the first one. Dogs were barking at all hours and there's no privacy. We drove through the other one and it looks so much nicer. Campsites more spread out with trees in between and way quieter. Will definitely stay there if we return.

    Swallow Falls State Park Campground

    Beautiful Hike

The kids had so much fun playing in the water we didn’t have time to hike and see all of it. We spent time in Swallow Falls as well as neighboring Herrington Manor state park where they have a “beach” for swimming and boat and SUP rentals. The prices for rentals were very reasonable and the concession stand was cheap!!! 2.50 for large fries, $1 snow cones, it was nice to splurge on snacks and not drop a small fortune.

We stayed at the camp ground in swallow falls in a pop up camper. The camp ground was quiet and well maintained though it is more suitable for tents and not trailers or RV’s. The bathrooms were decent for public bathhouses, they were cleaned daily but the were outdated. I would definitely come back but maybe with a tent next time and not the trailer. The camp store had the necessities at fair prices. Firewood is sold for $4 a bundle.

We did have a pet friendly site reserved but found out after we arrived that dogs are not allowed out of the campground. In order to hike with our dog we had to access the trail just outside the state park. This would have been nice information to have before arriving with our pet. Pets are allowed within the park Labor Day through Memorial Day.

Guide to Rices Landing

Pet friendly camping near Rices Landing, Pennsylvania offers varied terrain across the Appalachian plateau with elevations ranging from 800-2,000 feet throughout the region. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-85°F during day and drop to 55-65°F at night. Most campsites in this area sit on either ridge tops with valley views or along river corridors with water access.

What to do

Disc golf at campsites: Tall Oaks Campground recently added an on-site disc golf course for campers looking for recreation without leaving the property. "They just added a disc golf course to the campground as well. We are already planning another trip back!" notes reviewer Indy A.

Access the GAP trail: Uniontown KOA (now The Blue Canoe RV Resort) offers direct access to the Great Allegheny Passage trail system. "The GAP trail rolls right through the middle of this traditional KOA campground. The seasonal RVers and weekend warriors have long claimed their sites, but for through riders on the trail there is a special place to camp, close to the west-bound entrance," explains reviewer Shari G.

Whitewater adventures: Multiple campgrounds provide easy access to rafting opportunities on the Youghiogheny River. "Great place to go white water rafting!!!" mentions keshini C. about the activities near Ohiopyle. The Middle Yough section offers gentler Class I-II rapids suitable for beginners and families.

What campers like

Private woodland sites: Tall Oaks Campground receives praise for its spacious and secluded campsites. "Very large tent site and surrounded by woods. Not close to your neighbor like most campgrounds. Peaceful! Van Life sites are tucked away in the woods for privacy," writes Candy, highlighting the isolation many campers seek.

Swimming options: Some campgrounds feature swimming facilities that campers appreciate during hot summer months. "Great weekend at the pool," notes Heath T. about Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort, adding that they have "beautifully maintained lawns and gravel campsites, modern hookups, good shower/laundry facilities, nice fire rings with built in grills, trash pickup service."

Activities for children: Benner's Meadow Run offers numerous amenities for families. "So much to do for the kids. Clean and well kept," shares Kaylee L. Another camper, Tom C., mentions they "Got a nice secluded spot to camp in the wooded area that had amazing mountain views and the star gazing platform. Kids had a great time and lots of activities for them to do!"

What you should know

Bathroom facilities vary greatly: While some campgrounds maintain modern facilities, others struggle with upkeep. At Coopers Rock State Forest, "The bathrooms do not have lighting so bring a headlamp or flashlight," advises Danielle S. Campground bathhouse conditions can change seasonally.

Reservation communication issues: Some campers report frustrations with incomplete information when booking. "No one mentioned that the main road to the campground from Ohiopyle was also closed due to a separate paving project," reports one reviewer about Kentuck Campground, highlighting the importance of calling for current conditions.

Seasonal limitations: Many campgrounds in the region operate on limited schedules. Coopers Rock State Forest is open "April 1 to October 31," while other facilities may restrict certain amenities during shoulder seasons. "We were there in November with plans to visit Fallingwater. This campground was the perfect location for both activities! The campground was really nice and really empty in November when we were there."

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Benner's Meadow Run RV Campground offers organized entertainment for children throughout the season. "They even have entertainment and Saturday night was a fun DJ. The facilities are very clean," mentions Mark E., making it ideal for families seeking structured activities.

Natural attractions: Cucumber Falls, located near Ohiopyle State Park, provides a family-friendly hiking destination. "We recommend checking out cucumber falls, which isn't terribly far away," suggests Tanner W. Visiting early is recommended as parking can fill quickly during peak season.

Meal planning: Remote location of many campgrounds means limited food options. "Plan your meals well, before arriving. There are a couple of restaurants in Ohiopyle, but they are not open late. There are no grocery stores real close," advises Robert C., emphasizing the importance of bringing sufficient supplies.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Several campgrounds have sites that require significant leveling. "Very steep narrow roads to access campground and sites..sites not level and noisy, next to highway," warns Chris H. about one location. At Sand Springs Campground, another camper notes "it was challenging to level because the big gravel rocks on the site."

Hookup variations: Water and electric connections vary significantly between campgrounds and specific loops. "We had our camper doesn't have a bathroom so we need the bathhouse. There isn't one on every loop, but this one does have a restroom," observes Nora M., highlighting the importance of checking amenities before booking.

Accessibility for larger rigs: Many campgrounds in the region have limitations for big rigs. "About 3 miles from the interstate, narrow roads. Big rigs probably hard to back in," notes Tony C. about Sand Springs Campground, suggesting RVers research approach routes carefully.
