Canton area campgrounds offer pet-friendly options throughout the year, though sites fill quickly during summer months. The region sits in northeast Ohio at elevations around 1,000-1,100 feet, with hot, humid summers and cold winters that limit tent camping seasons from April through October. Most campgrounds near Canton connect to the Tuscarawas River watershed, providing water recreation opportunities alongside wooded sites.
What to do
Water activities at Atwood Lake Park: The 1,500-acre lake provides swimming, fishing, and boating options with dock access near campsites. "You can leave your camper, take the boat over to the beach and drop off the grandkids and me the Nana for swimming at the beach dock. Good fishing, clean clean clean," notes Susan S., who appreciates the convenience of the Atwood Lake Park Campground.
Trail hiking near tent sites: Rivers Edge Camping Area connects directly to the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail for hiking and biking. "Great access close to parking lot with privacy between you and the trail. Right alongside the river with a picnic table and firepit," reports Whiskey B. at Rivers Edge Camping Area, where campers can access miles of maintained trails.
Mini golf and swimming: Jellystone Park offers a full mini golf course and pool with daily activities for families. "The pool was busy. Many poolgoers were public payers. The pool hours were only 11a-7p," explains Dawn R., adding that "This campground has a really nice mini golf course! It's free for campers but the public can come and pay to play."
What campers like
Well-maintained facilities: Many campgrounds invest in keeping their grounds and facilities clean. "The shower house was very nice. Updated showers and flush toilets. There were also sporadic bathrooms around the campground," writes Dawn R. about Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park.
Waterfront campsites: Lakefront sites are among the most requested in the Canton area. At Mill Creek Camping, campers appreciate the direct lake access: "One of my favorite campgrounds visited this summer (came back again!) Low cost for staying ($18 for a waterside, spacious site for up to 8 people, 2 tents at no additional costs)," shares Katie.
Dog-friendly amenities: Silver Springs Campground offers exceptional pet facilities that go beyond basic accommodation. "Fantastic dog park with a swimming beach for dogs only. Fun to watch them play even if you don't have a dog," reports Judy F. about the Silver Springs Campground.
What you should know
Tent site limitations: The majority of campgrounds prioritize RV camping, with limited tent-only sites. "The designated tent spots are near a road that can be a little busy (Hoover Ave.) and at night the campground was louder than we're used to but didn't keep us from sleeping," explains Dawn R. about Jellystone Park.
Seasonal weather considerations: The Canton area experiences significant seasonal variations. "Gets loud and crowded on the weekend as usual, the shower house is pretty nice. The water is muddy and the shoreline is sharp rocks," notes Alika T. about Mill Creek Camping, suggesting water activities are best in mid-summer.
