Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Meers, OK

A private company owns (I think) and operates the campground. It’s nice and clean with good amenities. It does fill up on weekends quickly. The campground itself isn’t what I go to WMWR for but I’m not at all disappointed by the campground. Lots of trees and wildlife. Bison can and do walk through the campground which unique and pretty amazing.

There’s lots to do in the Refuge like shorter and somewhat long hikes as well as fishing and non-motorized boating. Watching wildlife like the bison and prairie dogs are very entertaining and remarkable. The towns of Meers and Medicine Park have their unique offerings as well. WMWR is a fabulous place to get away for flatlanders....or anyone really.

Absolutely wonderful camping and hiking!! Lots of camping spots - and most were well distanced for plenty of privacy. Due to COVID all spots require pre-registration online and only self contained vehicles are permitted (all bathrooms are closed). There is no service in the park, but about 2 bars next to the Visitor’s center (which is also closed), so be sure to reserve a spot before you get close to the park. Some sites are dry and some have electric hookups. No water available due to an ongoing E. Coli issue. The camp host was really nice and stopped by both nights we were there. There were lots of hikes and we are looking forward to coming back for an extended stay. For hiking, we loved 40 foot hole (nice waterfall) and Little Baldy for sunset. Wish we had been here a couple weeks earlier because I bet the trees would have been at peak fall foliage color. We saw long horns and bison several times, but unfortunately didn’t see any prairie dogs. We heard this park is mostly used by locals (~80 miles from Oklahoma City), and not many long distance travelers hear about it. Also heard there are great mountain biking trails.

My daughter and I tent camp as often as we can at Camp Doris.We brought our dog along this time. Camp sites are always clean and its quite.Lots of hiking to do at camp or nearby.

I love coming here. So beautiful. Never busy a great place to take the dog and just go for a walk or take your ATV and just go off roading or just go for a swim. Trust me you'll enjoy it

This campground is great! Sites are nicely spaced and restrooms are clean. It was a little noisy after sundown with some surprisingly loud prairie dog barking! Also a few St. Patrick's Day partiers, but that's to be expected. Hiking in the area is great, but watch for ticks.

We stayed for 8 months & it has been our favorite campground to date! It’s quiet, clean, friendly & most importantly safe! Gina & Glen are so sweet- they take very good care of the campground & are constantly doing more to improve it! Propane on site, wifi, dog run, showers/bathrooms, laundry, & storm shelter.

Doris campgrounds are only open for RV campers due to covid so I couldn’t stay. Mount Scott had some pretty awesome views and I hiked the trail across the road from it by the bathrooms. There is a gate and a path beside it made from vehicle wheels. You can hike pretty far. There are several spots where you cross a creek which was good for my dogs or I think they would have died by the way they were panting lol. It was 91 degrees when I hiked it. Take 2 water bottles for yourself if it’s hot out! The trail ends at a beautiful lake with the mountain in the distance. I walked down to the lake so the dogs could cool off and drink for a while. Def loved taking it all in. There’s cattle but they didn’t mind us one bit.

I did see camping in town right before the blue water towers, along the river/creek there are tent camping spots and a lot of people were fishing. It’s just over the bridge and you can miss it. It’s not on the app so thought I would mention it in my review and added some pics of that area!

Must be self contained to stay right now. Campground host very helpful. One of the best I’ve ever met. Campsites are nice and spacious not a lot of campers during the week. Campsite overlooking the lake. Wildlife is everywhere. We watched turkeys, prairie dog and longhorn steers. There is so much beauty in this place. We enjoyed the hiking. Especially at Quanah Parker Dam. We loved learning about the cannonball architecture. We loved the reproduction of Jerusalem. Everything about this place is fantastic. I can’t think of one negative thing to say. I don’t know what the views from Mount Scott were like. There was a weather phenomenon that pushed the clouds down so you could barely see in front of your face. White knuckle moments for sure driving up and down in those conditions.

Camped here in October 2017. It was very cold. We brought our dog. While setting up camp, a flock of turkeys came right up to us - about 12! The camp was easy to get to. The camp also had firewood and Ice available for self purchase. When you arrive, there is a visitors center we stopped at but not much to see there. We headed to the campground and there was a woman in a booth who you pay admission to and determine which campsites are open. The campsites themselves are large and give you lots of room to roam around to find twigs to use in your fire. Our site had a trail linked to it down to the lake. There's a picnic table at the site and fire ring. There's also a grill. The bathrooms are a short walk as well as a composting toilet. The campground was relatively calm and quiet. The hikes in the park were pretty decent and we saw buffalo roaming in the roads!

Incredible scenery and wildlife.

We were in site 47-B, which is an area that is near the lake and has electrical.  This particular site has the lake just a few steps from the camp.  These are electrical only sites.  And the water available at the campground was not potable and has been this way since 2017 per a sign.  During reservation, it was noted that bathrooms were not operational, and only self contained RVs were allowed.  That said, there were tent campers when we were there.  Note there is no cellular service in the campground.

We found the sites to be very quiet and spread out.  There are many great sites along the lake edge beyond our loop, but these offered no electrical.  Longhorns were evidenced in our area.  We enjoyed driving over to Prairie Dog town and spending time laughing at their antics.  Since our last visit, their area has really grown and continued to spread out.  We also enjoyed visiting the Environmental Education Center for its trails and pier, as the Center was closed due to COVID.  I think our favorite area is around Rush Lake for its views and waterfalls.  Don't miss the views from atop Mt. Scott.

I love this area, my favorite part of Oklahoma. Doris Campground is nice. It has all the amenities you could ask for with the bonus of being next to some great hiking, fishing, wildlife and more.

Bathrooms are clean and the spots are well maintained.

Great place to stay, lots of hiking, perch fishing for kids,full hookups ups great spots with shade,maybe y’all can find Oklahoma’s rock the rose rock,good luck

This hidden gem is one of the greater places to go in Oklahoma. Even if I did lock my keys in the truck and had to wait on AAA

This so far is my absolute favorite place to camp in the northwest region of Oklahoma. At night you can hear elk. There is a variety of sites from RV, tents, and hike in sites. The park has free range elk, buffalo, and longhorn. Absolutely beautiful and has lots of sites but does fill up fast! Even in March and sometimes February!

We needed a place to stay for the night while passing through Oklahoma. We decided to take a detour and check out this state park. We camped in December, so we practically had the entire place to ourselves. The park was full of deer everywhere!!

Some sections has nice sized campsites and some sections were literally stacked on top of each other. I can imagine this place is cramped in the summer time, but it was excellent for the winter.

The Oklahoma State Parks book indicated that there was a restaurant in the lodge. We went to the beautiful lodge to eat and received strange looks when we asked for the restaurant. Apparently they do not have one. That was a big disappointment for us, but we found a local steak joint not to far from camp.

The night sky viewing was pretty good. I wish they would upgrade their lighting to be more dark sky friendly. This would be an great location for that.

I was able to hike up the New Horizon Trail. The views were incredible! Highly recommend this trail.

Enjoying it, end April, cool weather. Sites spacious & trees nearby. Only a few RVs ‘n me. No tents. My neighbors from Oklahoma City saw it’s booked for weekend. Locals love it. Nice easy short hikes. Bathrooms a bit outdated but work. One has a super old hand drier (works!) from , my guess by looks, 50+ years!

The Wichita Mountains is the park we frequent the most. It's only about an hour and a half from Oklahoma City and has really wonderful tourist center, trails, and campgrounds. The scenery of The Narrows, Charon's Garden, Elk Mountain, and the Holy City are wonderful. Doris Campground will fill up quickly on weekends, so reservations are suggested. Join 'Friends of the Wichitas' for exclusive tours of the private areas of the park and access to stargazing and wildlife events. Drive up Mount Scott for beautiful views of neighboring Lake Lawtonka, and wonderful sunsets.
