Awesome State Park

Spent one night here. Pretty much right on the Tom Steed reservoir so fishing and boating is an option. Space was fairly level and had both electric and water. $25 per night. They do give a small senior discount. Standard park restrooms and showers. All the sites had picnic tables and firings. Great hiking trails nearby also. We were there on a weekend and it was pretty full.

Nice

Our April stay was great, used it as a base camp for the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Our site was a pull thru with FHU. This time of year, the campground was maybe 33% full. Staff was great, the grounds are clean. Very windy at times, probably normal for the area. I'd stay again.

Pleasant

Stayed in April in the Otter Creek section. Almost empty. It is scenic next to a lake. Electric and water hook up. Coin showers.

Nice State Park close to a lake!

What a beautiful, well kept campground!! The grounds are very clean and so are the bathroom/showers. Lot's of hiking/biking trails. Gorgeous view of the lake! Looks like a fun place to go fishing. I was impressed with the number of ADA/handicap sites. Thank You!! You make "everyone" feel welcomed! Plus they make it very easy to go online and make reservations! Great work Oklahoma State Parks!

Also very close to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Great places to hike and see Bison!

Nice little state park

Great little state park right on the shores of Tom Steed Reservoir. Sites are well spaced. Campground is well maintained. Good fishing. Lots of walking area around the lake. Friendly staff. Most all sites have a view of the water. You’ll need to make reservations to ensure you get a site. This is not a huge campground. It’s very quiet and relaxing. Not a lot of shade. Good view of the Witchita Mountain range in the background. The Witchita Wildlife Preserve is nearby and worth taking the family to see free roaming bison.

What a Surprise!

This is a great park in far western Oklahoma! Not very much shade but Glen Creek is a diamond in the rough! Fun fun fun to paddle in the kayak!

Open & Clean

We came when Doris Campground was full in the Wichita Wildlife Refuge and were pleasantly surprised. The weather was perfect--70s during the day and 50s at night, my ideal sleeping temps.

The campgrounds and restrooms are clean and well kept; however, there aren't a lot of sites with substantial tree cover. This was not a problem for us in October, but I bet it is stifling in summer and early-fall months.

The sites we stayed in were on the lake. The sunsets and sunrises are gorgeous over the gentle slopes of the land. There are rock formations the kids enjoy climbing all over.

It's maybe a 15-minute drive to the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. Even though there are sites in the refuge, Great Plains had a lot of visitors when were were there.

**UPDATE**
We came out with a Girl Scout Troop a year later (October 2018). The park was very crowded, which is fine, but tent sites are mixed with RV sites. Not only was the noise from RVs disturbing, many sites had obnoxious guests who stayed up drinking all through the night.

I really wish parks would separate tents from RVs.

It still is a nice area.

Beautiful Lake Park

Great Plains State Park is a nice park that I feel is overshadowed by the Wichita National Wildlife Refuge just 25 minutes northeast. This park is very nice, and has a beautiful blue lake. Its restrooms are clean, and full-time staff is friendly and helpful. Lots of RVs, but the campsites are far enough away to avoid the noise.

When we visited, the wind was very strong. I've been to the Wichita Mountains a ton and I know the wind can pick up quite a bit there, but without the shelter of the rocks/mountains, the wind can go wild here. If you get a campsite by the lake, make sure you're anchored in or by trees! The trails weren't very well marked, but the beautiful water made up for it.
