Lake Eufaula provides the backdrop for RV sites near Red Oak, Oklahoma, with both commercial and state park campgrounds available throughout the region. The area sits at an elevation between 500-750 feet above sea level, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F from June through September. Winter camping is available year-round at most facilities, though water systems may be winterized during freezing conditions.
What to do
Hiking trails: Robbers Cave State Park offers numerous hiking opportunities with varying difficulty levels. "It made me sick that people would carve into the rocks and spray paint the cave. But all in all it was really nice," notes a visitor to Robbers Cave State Park.
Fishing access: Lake Wister provides excellent bank fishing and boat access. "Trout fishing just steps away from camp and we had the whole campground to ourselves for the night," reports a camper at Robbers Cave, while Victor Campground offers "very nice lake views" with "plenty to see and do besides fishing."
Swimming options: Multiple swimming areas exist throughout the region's lakes and developed facilities. "We spent two afternoons swimming in Lake Carlton. The designated swim area has a very rocky drop-off for an entrance, but once out it was very nice swimming," explains a visitor to Victor Campground.
What campers like
Privacy levels: Some campgrounds offer more secluded sites than others. "Old Circle Campground...on the opposite side held our own little secluded spot surrounded by pine trees down a slight slope from camper," describes one reviewer of their experience at Robbers Cave State Park.
Water views: Many sites feature direct water access or scenic overlooks. At Lake Wister State Park, a camper notes, "We did love this site for the view alone! However, our RV is 35 FT long and while it's rated for this length it was a little difficult to back into, because of surrounding trees. The view was right on the water edge."
Family amenities: Several campgrounds offer additional activities beyond basic camping. At Marval Camping Resort, a visitor explains, "This place has everything, movie theater, horse riding, a train that goes around the park, golf carts, tons of activities for the entire family... Swimming pool and all."
What you should know
Site spacing concerns: Some campgrounds have tightly packed sites with minimal privacy. "Sites are laid out badly and way too close to each other. Grills, picnic table and fire ring behind sites. Most within 5 feet of neighbors sewer connection," warns a camper about Lake Wister State Park.
Bathroom conditions: Facilities vary widely across campgrounds. One Robbers Cave visitor reported, "The structure is very old and very dated stone structure, where you might find frogs sitting on shower curtains, spiders, and lizards."
Noise factors: Some campgrounds experience noise from roads or trains. At Love's RV Hookup, a camper warns, "This Loves RV stop is not at a truck stop so not as much noise. Great sites that are flat and level. 1-15 are full hookup but 16-18 do not have sewer. BUT the train that comes through several times a night uses their horn more than I have ever heard."
Tips for camping with families
Activity scheduling: Check with park offices about special programs. "The Oklahoma Park staff were very knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to answer any of my questions. Also when you get to camp they will give you a schedule of all the events that are going on throughout the week you are staying," shares a Robbers Cave State Park visitor.
Playground options: Several campgrounds offer play areas for children. At Onapa RV Park, a camper notes they "have a basketball court and a cool looking playground for kids."
Crowding considerations: Weekends can mean less space for kids to play. "The sites are close together, it was beyond crowded (my son couldn't even ride his bike because of the constant amount of cars)," reports one Marval Resort visitor.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling needs: Many concrete pads require additional work. "Located about 4 miles south of I40, this was a great overnight stop. The hosts are extremely friendly and accommodating. We were greeted upon driving in and promptly directed to our site. They have nicely spaced spots, not exactly level, but very clean and quiet," explains a visitor to Onapa RV Park & Campground.
Power options: Different campgrounds offer varying electrical capabilities. Terra Starr RV Park provides "some with 30 & some 50 Amp for RV" while most parks in the region offer at least 30-amp service with many upgrading to 50-amp at premium sites.
Access challenges: Some campgrounds have narrow roads or tight turns. "Our RV is 35 FT long and while it's rated for this length it was a little difficult to back into, because of surrounding trees," notes a camper at Victor Campground, while others mention that "road is very narrow and not one way."
