Best Campgrounds near Youngstown, OH

State parks and recreation areas within an hour of Youngstown, Ohio provide a variety of camping experiences centered around lakes and reservoirs. West Branch State Park Campground, located 20 miles west of Youngstown near Wayland, offers year-round camping with tent sites, RV spots, cabins, and yurts alongside Kirwan Reservoir. Mosquito Lake State Park Campground in Cortland features waterfront sites with varying levels of privacy and a mix of open and wooded terrain. Closer to town, Youngstown ARS FamCamp provides a small but well-maintained RV park with 15 sites adjacent to the Youngstown Regional Airport. The Ohio-Pennsylvania border area includes additional options like Pymatuning State Park and Shenango Campground, both offering water-based recreation opportunities.

Reservations are essential during summer months when lakefront sites fill quickly, particularly at West Branch State Park. According to one camper, "West Branch is one of the best-known family campgrounds in NE Ohio. Be sure to book early as spots fill up often." Most state park campgrounds in the region maintain clean facilities with shower houses, though amenities vary considerably between locations. Cell service can be spotty, with T-Mobile coverage noted as weak at several parks. Weather conditions remain relatively mild from May through October, with occasional summer thunderstorms. Winter camping is available at select locations like West Branch, though with reduced services. Many campgrounds close or operate with limited facilities from November through April.

Lakefront camping dominates the region's offerings, with fishing, boating, and swimming available at most locations. Campers frequently mention the quality of waterfront sites at Mosquito Lake, where "the site was spacious, but not as private as some others." Pymatuning State Park receives praise for its lake views and wildlife watching opportunities, including bald eagles and various bird species. Noise levels vary significantly between campgrounds, with West Branch described as busy with boat traffic during summer days but quieter at night. The Youngstown ARS FamCamp offers a more peaceful setting, with one visitor noting it's "pretty quiet, probably more air traffic when it's warmer as it's mostly private planes at the actual airport." Family-friendly amenities like playgrounds, beaches, and hiking trails are common at the state parks.

    Bear Run Campground

    Options.

This is an amazing campground with reasonable prices, an array of camping options to suit different camping needs as well as budget range. I am unsure if I just happen to have gotten lucky and decided to go camping during a special weekend, but it’s Labor Day weekend and I am loving that there is a calendar of events for campers to participate in if they choose to. Activities include wagon rides to the lake, talent show, karaoke…etc, as well as church! This was an unexpected gem as we are from Florida and were blessed enough to stumble upon the right person in a parking lot when my husband asked if they knew of any places that we could possibly camp at nearby and that gentleman told us about Moraine Park. Upon making our way out to here, we found Bear Run and have loved our experience so far. Love it!

    Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

    Woodside Lake Park

Old Park With Iron Laden Well Water Beware

I stayed at this park for 2 months in 2023 and was planing on staying for 5 months in 2025. I left after 2 months due to iron& sulfur laden well water that is provided in at least half the park. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to filter and clean up the water to no avail. It damages everything and they won't put a treatment system in at the well pump like the 2nd well has so you can filter it to an acceptable level for drinking, cooking, washing etc.

In 2023 I was in a section that was treated and my filters/softener did a acceptable job to make it work. I Used the laundry facilities also. This trip to see family in 2025 I was in a different section and by the second day it was unacceptable disgusting turbid rusty water with sulfur odor. I bought additional filters for Ferrous Iron Water treatment and remediation along with iron out chemical for cleaning fixtures and plumbing system on the camper. It barely worked well enough for a couple weeks between filter changes and rinsing the system for shower use. I Had to buy drinking water in town every few days for cooking, drinking and brushing teeth etc.

New owners bought the park in 2023 and have increased monthly rent from$750 a month to$950 a month but don't seem to care enough about the health and comfort of their guest to do anything with the well water for a majority of the park. Let alone any of the other infrastructure or"amenities" to be generous in there reference This year even the laundry machines where too disgusting to use that we had to go into town for laundry also.

The park needs major renovations to just bring it up to modern standards. The bath house is in decrepit condition moldy smelly and barely cleaned anytime I was over there. Site pads are rip rap 1" to 4" size rock with no fine rock coverings, or in some areas smoother rock and dirt but nowhere close to flat or level. Water drainage when its raining is deplorable and you very well might be in a mud pit at your doorway.

It's sad there are no decent RV parks in the Cleveland area, just old campgrounds that have added hook-ups and market themselves as RV parks and now charge like they are RV Resorts. Reserve a space at your own risk and definitely verify where and what water source you are on. Bring plenty of filters and plan on sanitizing your system after staying there.

    Silver Springs Campground

    Affordable

The lots are nice and large. The main problem was very hard to level and soft grass they don’t have a well compacted area for your tt/rv. Would be nice to have bathroom built on the campground. Have to walk to the baseball field to use the bathrooms. Overall had a good time with my family.

    Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground

    Great community

When I first got here the 2 owners went above and beyond in so many ways. Unfortunately they didn’t have a 50 amp site available so the owner gave me 30 amp converter at no cost and also helped me hook up my gray water and black water connections. They keep the area pristine and welcome everyone as if they are family.

Great Outdoor Spot in Beaver County

This campground is great for a little getaway. Most sites are spacious! Only downside is you can hear the airport. Not a huge deal though! We loved it

Guide to Youngstown

Camping areas within driving distance of Youngstown, Ohio center largely around scenic lakes and reservoirs in northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The terrain consists primarily of gently rolling hills with elevations ranging from 850 to 1,100 feet above sea level. Most campsites in the region sit on former farmland that's been converted to recreational use, with mixed hardwood forests providing natural boundaries between camping areas.

What to do

Fishing in stocked lakes: At Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area, campers have direct water access from lakefront sites. "Our camp site was in close proximity to the restroom facilities. We were fourtante that our spot was right beside the lake and we could keep the boat docked their during our stay," notes Renee G.

Archery practice: Mosquito Lake State Park maintains an archery range for visitors. "We come here at least once, sometimes twice per year - we travel about 2 hours to get there. We like to bring our bows and use the archery range," reports Karen D.

Historical exploration: Beaver Creek State Park Campground offers a glimpse into local history with its pioneer village. "The best part about the area was the history that surrounds it. There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc)," explains Shay D.

Wildlife observation: Several campgrounds provide opportunities to see local wildlife. One camper at Shenango Campground mentioned, "We saw big Blue Herons, Oriels, Robins, and lot's of little song birds. There are some groundhogs there too."

What campers like

Clean facilities: West Branch State Park Campground receives consistent praise for its maintenance. "Clean individual showers," notes dan M., while another camper described it as having "best barhrooms around! showers great. bathrooms great."

Spacious sites: Campgrounds near Youngstown typically offer good separation between sites. At Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground, "It does not feel crowded, sites were grassy and all utilities worked well," according to Sue B.

Quiet atmosphere: Several campgrounds provide peaceful settings away from urban noise. At Youngstown ARS FamCamp, a camper observed it's "pretty quiet, probably more air traffic when it's warmer as it's mostly private planes at the actual airport."

Water access: Direct lake access remains a major draw for many campsites. A camper at Mill Creek noted, "We have our own private little beach which our dog loves. Which is another plus, we have a Rottie mix and they allow her in."

What you should know

Reservation timing: Many campgrounds in the region fill quickly, especially water-adjacent sites. At West Branch, one visitor advises, "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!"

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring additional equipment. "We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches," reported one camper at West Branch.

Water restrictions: Beaver Creek State Park Campground operates with limited water facilities. "They are on a well so there is limited water and they don't allow you to fill up your on board tank. Make sure you fill up before you go!" warns a visitor.

Road access limitations: Some campgrounds have restrictions on vehicle size or road access. A Beaver Creek camper noted, "There is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!"

Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Many campgrounds feature play areas for children. At Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground, "Our family really enjoyed staying here, and our kids especially loved swimming and fishing in the lake," reports Sabrina D.

Nature exploration activities: Mill Creek offers educational opportunities for younger visitors. "Beach was great and there an epic playground for kids. If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters," notes Joe F.

Weekend entertainment: Several campgrounds schedule regular activities for families. "An ice cream social is held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend," shares one West Branch camper, while others mention movie nights at various parks.

Bike-friendly layouts: Some campgrounds feature terrain suitable for younger cyclists. "Campground is flat and great for bike riding. Nice playground for kids," reports a visitor to Mosquito Lake.

Tips from RVers

Utility connections: Some campgrounds have unusual setups for RV hookups. At Shenango Campground, "There are no FHU sites (camp host sites have electric & water). Electric sites are centrally grouped within the loops and spaced closer together than most COEs," explains one experienced RVer.

Water fill stations: Several campers note challenges with water access. "First the water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full," reports a West Branch camper.

Site selection strategies: RVers recommend researching specific sites. "If we were to stay at this CG again, we'd come during the week and get a dry camping site on the water," advises a Shenango visitor, while another notes, "The Pine Loop # 130, 161, 118, 121, 123, and 128" offer better options at that location.

Dump station access: Campers note varying dump station arrangements across parks. At one KOA location, a visitor reported, "Our spot was level but our sewer hookup was next to the neighbors campfire so we couldn't hook up and had to use the dump station before we left."
