Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Liberty Center, OH

Harrison Lake State Park Campground features a dedicated dog beach where pets can swim alongside their owners. The park's pet-friendly sites accommodate tents, RVs, cabins, and yurts with electric hookups available. Mary Jane Thurston State Park Campground and Sauder Village Campground also welcome pets with designated areas for exercise. Most campgrounds in the region require pets to remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet when outside vehicles or tents. The Eco Camp and Cannaley Treehouse Village provide unique glamping experiences where pets are permitted. Campers note that Harrison Lake's secluded sites offer quiet retreats for pets sensitive to noise, though weekend activity levels increase significantly during summer months.

Trails along the Maumee River at Independence Dam State Park provide excellent walking opportunities for leashed dogs, with several access points to the water. The park's campsites are positioned on a small elevated bank overlooking the river, with sites 11-15 offering the best combination of space and river access for pet owners. Twin Acres Campground and Bluegrass Campground maintain seasonal operations from spring through fall with full hookup options for RV campers traveling with pets. Several campgrounds feature dedicated dog parks, including Big Sandy Campground which provides a fenced area for off-leash play. Campers should be prepared for wildlife encounters, particularly geese at waterfront locations like Sauder Village where droppings can be problematic along shorelines despite staff hazing efforts.

    Quiet, Friendly Campground

We really enjoyed our stay. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful. Delivered our firewood right to our site. Lots of shade trees, beautiful well groomed trails for walking. Even a dog park, which our Golden Retriever really enjoyed.

We stayed at this campground in the group camp area. The sites are tight but do provide water and 30 amp electric.

The campground offers a pond for fishing , swimming pool , bounce pad , inflatable lake fun, dog park and mini golf.

Since we were there as a group event we didn’t use any of the extras but it all looked nice and clean plus lots of fun.

Cell coverage was spotty but you could usually get some kind of signal.

The campground has a lot of seasonal sites as well as primitive tent camping and standard rv sites.

Nice Campground for a Group Event

This is our second time camping here and both times were for a group camping event. For this type of event it’s a great park. We had a whole sector the event with water and electric sites.

If we were going to camp here on our own I am not sure I would like it since it’s mostly set up for seasonal campers. So there are no hiking trail and there is also a lot of golf cart traffic.

They do offer a swimming pool , pond with inflatable slides , dog park , bound pad and miniature golf.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

    Monroe-Toledo North KOA

    Little overpriced to me

Sites and restrooms were alright, think it is ridiculous to pay extra each night for each pet and children, too many other campgrounds in our area that are more updated and reasonably priced.

Guide to Liberty Center

The Liberty Center area offers multiple camping options within flat agricultural terrain, with elevations ranging from 700-800 feet above sea level. Located in northwest Ohio's corn belt, campsites often provide views of surrounding farmland. Summer temperatures average between 70-85°F with occasional thunderstorms during peak camping season.

What to do

Trail exploration at White Oak Campground: The campground connects directly to the 15.5-mile Scout Trail loop that runs through Oak Openings. According to Cassandra C., "I was able to park my car here in the morning, hop on the trail (which runs right through the campground), and return later in the day. The sites are very nicely spaced and shaded, and not right on the parking lot."

Paddling the Maumee River: Mary Jane Thurston State Park Campground offers excellent river access with sites positioned along the Maumee. As Andrea F. notes, "Our site was right along the Maumee River and our view was just breathtaking. We watching the seagulls play and catch food while great blue herons skimmed that water and fisherman were out fly fishing."

Splash pad and swimming: Families enjoy water activities at Sauder Village Campground, which features a fenced splash pad for children. As Brittany S. mentions, "They had a playground and splash pad. The bathrooms were also a plus. They were very clean and we used the shower a couple times."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Harrison Lake State Park Campground maintains exceptionally clean bathrooms and shower facilities. According to Hillary W., "The bathrooms were scrupulously clean and always available without a line. The hosts are terrific: the campsites and fire pits are immediately cleaned."

Free firewood: White Oak Campground provides complimentary firewood to campers. Kevin K. explains, "Well kept campground, bathrooms were very clean, and nice to have the firewood included. We will definitely be back."

Historical experiences: Campers at Sauder Village appreciate its proximity to the historical village museum. According to BluePitMom O., "There's so much to do at the village! What a wonderful place for history lovers and/or kids. In addition to the village, there is a splash pad, a pool (in the nearby inn), and a couple of hiking trails."

What you should know

Site layouts and spacing: Mary Jane Thurston State Park sites have minimal privacy. Lee D. observes, "This park was laid out more like an RV park with the sites very close together and no privacy between them (Site 16 looked to be the best one for privacy)."

Water access locations: Some campgrounds place water sources in central locations rather than at individual sites. Bob M. from Mary Jane Thurston notes, "The only real negative is the bathrooms & shower house are a mile or so away at the marina, kind of odd."

Wildlife considerations: Twin Acres Campground and several others have seasonal residents. According to Tina, "There are lots of seasonal campers here, but all I talked with were friendly. Wifi wasn't great and we weren't able to connect to it, but Verizon and AT&T worked well."

Reservation requirements: Some campgrounds have specific reservation policies. Megan T. explains about White Oak Campground, "There's no check-in process or attendant. I hadn't printed my permit, so I wondered if I would get a visit from a ranger but all was quiet."

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated kids' activities: Big Sandy Campground offers family-friendly swimming areas and fishing opportunities. Beth G. reports, "Nice sites, a great little lake to swim another area to fish. They had great fireworks and simple outdoor fun."

Consider treehouse camping: Families seeking unique accommodations can try the Cannaley Treehouse Village for pet-friendly camping near Liberty Center, Ohio. Leah R. shares, "This little village was so much fun for my 2 little people! I think 1 night is plenty as the site itself doesn't offer a ton of amenities but there are some trails that you can walk/bike without leaving base."

Be prepared for weekend crowds: Family-friendly campgrounds can become busy during peak times. Ari A. advises at Harrison Lake State Park, "This seemed to be a popular campground for families — especially little kids on bikes, so be extra cautious when driving around or even riding your own bike because the kids seemed to have no concept of safely riding around."

Tips from RVers

Site layout and accessibility: RV campers should note the variation in site layouts across campgrounds. The Traveler W. notes about Twin Acres, "This is a well organized place. It has its own community with club house. It was all RV's with only a handfull of tents including my own."

Hookup locations: When staying at Mary Jane Thurston State Park, Dan T. advises, "We were in a premium site (#2) which means we had electric & water. Sites have ample space & shade." At some campgrounds, water connections may require planning, as Dan T. notes at Twin Acres: "Do plan on having possible long stretch for water connection."

Space considerations for larger rigs: For those with larger RVs seeking pet-friendly camping options near Liberty Center, 5Keplers from Mary Jane Thurston State Park shares, "We have a Xtra large 5th wheel and dualy truck. It can be tough to find comfortable campgrounds. My husband parked the 5th wheel fairly easily."
