    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds near Cleveland Heights include several state parks and private facilities within a 30-mile radius offering diverse camping experiences. Punderson State Park Campground, located about 30 miles east, features sites for tents, RVs, and glamping options in a wooded setting surrounding a lake. The Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA provides cabin accommodations alongside traditional tent and RV sites. Most developed campgrounds in the area operate seasonally, with many closing from late October through April, though Punderson State Park remains open year-round for camping enthusiasts.

The terrain around northeast Ohio campgrounds varies from relatively flat to moderately hilly, with some sites at Punderson requiring campers to navigate slopes to reach tent pads. Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend camping, especially during summer months when facilities reach capacity. Most established campgrounds offer electrical hookups, drinking water, and bathroom facilities with showers, though the level of amenities varies significantly by location. The camping season primarily runs from April through October when weather conditions are most favorable. As one camper noted, "The campground is very pretty with lots of large trees and it's pretty quiet. It was easy to bike through the campground."

Campers seeking more rustic experiences can find opportunities at locations like The West Woods and Penitentiary Glen Reservation, which offer walk-in tent camping with minimal amenities. These sites typically require hikers to carry equipment short distances from parking areas, providing a more secluded experience. A visitor to Penitentiary Glen mentioned, "Would have given this site 5 stars but the walk to the site was a bit more of a haul than expected. It's like you have the forest to yourselves out here." Many campers appreciate the proximity to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which lies approximately 45 minutes southwest of Cleveland Heights. The region's campgrounds generally feature wooded settings with access to hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and small lakes for paddling and swimming during warmer months.

      Punderson State Park Campground

      Quiet and Lush

Our site was level, although I observed many that are not. It was fairly quiet, although the sites are pretty small. Ours was described as 'waterfront', but it was so overgrown between the site and the shoreline that there was no access and the lake wasn't visible. Bathrooms were very clean and the shower worked great.

      Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

      Relaxing and peaceful

Mosquito Lake gets a bad rap because of its name. We had such a great time launching our kayak from our campsite! I’ve attached a highlighted map marked with the sights on or very close to the water to launch a kayak. Additional kayak launch sites available around the park if you can’t get one of these. It’s great campground if you have kids or a dog. Plenty of great playgrounds and a dog park/dog beach. The camp host was very nice and welcoming. The wash house has laundry and showers. Everything was clean.

      Perry Township Park

      Great view of Lake Erie!

Gated and private campground. You can come and go as you please 24/7 with a gate card. Secure and clean bathrooms. Laundry room. Camp store and more. Wi-Fi is available. But the view on being right on lake Erie is the best. It's a must campground, at least once.

      Perry Township Park

      Perry Township Park and Campground

Another pleasant stay at this campground! We had made our reservations online prior to our stay and the process was super easy. And as always, the campground host was very friendly and helpful. Unlike a lot of city parks I've been to, this one is behind a gate and the showers/restrooms have codes you're provided with during check-in, so that helps keep things safe, quiet, and clean. I still haven't used the showers here, but the separate restrooms were spotless. The park itself is nice and was busy with families enjoying outdoor activities. Everyone was also respectful during quiet hours.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Nice local park

Nice place to stay for the weekend. Inexpensive. No water hookups at the individual sites but potable water is available in the park. The downsides are the sights can get muddy if there is rain. Only portapotties nearby.

We had big storms roll through when we were there. Unfortunately a large branch broke off of a nearby tree and hit the engine hood of our RV and dented it in several places. It could have been much worse though and not the park’s fault. Could happen anywhere there are trees.

      Headwaters Park

      Campsite A

Had a nice stay at the Camp Site A tent site, which they label as their ADA Accessible site.

Overall me and the kids had a really nice time hanging atbthe site and exploring around the lake. Lots of friendly people too.

      Pros:

      • Tent site was generally good with a picnic table and fire pit on-site
      • Pull in parking right next to the campsite (which seems to be true for all tents and leantos)
      • Great walkable area with lots to explore with the kids
      • A few nice things just a 10min drive away like the Eagle Park splash park and playground and the cute Burton town square.
      • Tons of birds for all my bird watchers
      • Right at the entrance to the tent site area and right next to the restrooms
      • Sometimes people bring horses down there for a walk
      • Can't see other campers tent from your site (which i like because Im out here to get away from people)

      Cons:

      • Being right next the restrooms and tent area entrance is a higher traffic area. Didn't bother us much but could get annoying if woken up by a late night driver or door slam
      • The stump on the tent site has a snake in it. Didn't bother us at all, only saw it once as it was slithering away, but thought other might like to know.
      • Toilet was out of hand sanitizer

      FAQ:

      • No electic
      • No plumbing or showers (it is basically an outhouse)

      Clay's Resort Jellystone Park

NO communication and severely lacking customer service skills

I won’t rate the other categories yet but I’ve been upset the whole process trying to plan my trip and the people have made it impossible. I’m constantly unable to get ahold of the park. I keep getting put on the“call back list” when trying to modify a reservation only for NO ONE to ever call back. I finally get ahold of someone after a MONTH… only to have zero customer service skills… they just said“oh we don’t even have a call list” so I ask for another form of communication I can have with me since my trip is in a month and I’ve had these issues for a month… they offer ZERO solutions and are not empathetic either. Another issue was last year I was hospitalized for several months due to an early twin birth so I had to push my trip to the following year… when I FINALLY got ahold of the park last year the women I spoke with trying to manage the rescheduling…was ZERO help surprise surprise… on top of that it took 13 calls and weeks before a manager got back to me…making the window to reschedule or get refunds closer to closing adding stress that you might not get to make your next move how you’d like… anyway…I simply asked for dates that matched the costs that we already paid for the trip so I didn’t have to pay more… I simply asked for it to be within the summer days since my previous reservation was during the summer time with all the extra water park and amenities that close at the end of August. I booked when my kid could use all amenities and there were no hour restrictions either due to still being in season. However the lady couldn’t accommodate or recommend any alternate dates to suite my trip that weren’t several hundred dollars more… now we started out with a trip all paid for last year with all amenities no hour restrictions to a weekend we had to pay more and are restricted hours wise on the summer amenities. As the person doing reservations you should be able to recommend dates and help me plan the trip accordingly to the money spent and not sit on the other end of the phone demanding I just give you dates…. After our trip we will never plan or schedule anything at this park again. Regardless of the amenities… for families traveling far distances you couldn’t make it anymore inconvenient, difficult, and time consuming for simply planning questions or just getting ahold of you in general. No sorrys…. Just a whole lot of…”hmm that’s weird well oh well, next” kind of attitude. Zero solutions just excuses. So that being first impressions not too excited to find out what we are in for when we arrive. Especially reading other reviews about deflated balls so you can’t use the hoops, broken a/c units that the property won’t even handle that their own employees have to give up their own personal comfort cause management won’t?… concession stands trash everywhere… broken hot tubs, WiFi not working in cabins for night time with children is tough…sad that my family’s first camping trip ever hasnt even happened yet and it’s been nothing but a headache to plan because of the staff. Yall make money to make the experience smooth for your consumers but somebody missed the memo.

      Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA Holiday

      Enjoyable

The staff here was excellent. We got a spot near the entrance that had the doggy play pen. It was a well built structure. I felt good about my dogs being in it. The campground is wonderful. So peaceful and pretty. As and added plus for anybody a fan of the band The Cars, Ben Orr’s grave is not far.

    Guide to Cleveland Heights

Campgrounds near Cleveland Heights feature a mix of terrain from relatively flat sites to more challenging sloped areas requiring careful leveling. Most campgrounds in northeast Ohio open seasonally from April through October, though some offer year-round access. Sites vary from walk-in tent camping requiring short hikes to fully-equipped RV sites with electrical and water hookups.

    What to do

Hiking and nature exploration: Penitentiary Glen Reservation Campsite offers secluded tent camping with easy access to hiking trails and natural features. "Its like you have the forest to yourselves out here," notes one camper, though be prepared for a longer walk to the site as "the walk to the site was a bit more of a haul than expected."

Water activities: The reservoir at West Branch State Park Campground provides multiple options for boating and paddling. "We can launch our kayaks right from our campsite," reports a regular visitor. The park also features "many inlets to explore or fish" and both a small beach at the campground and "a larger one on the other side of the lake."

Cultural sites: Campers staying near Cleveland Heights can access both urban and natural attractions. Those visiting Cuyahoga Valley National Park appreciate the diverse offerings: "With its popular waterfall hikes, its various free ranger programs, and its community services (such as a farmer's market, historic sites, and wellness programs) Cuyahoga has something for every visitor."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campsites near Cleveland Heights offer good separation between camping areas. At Silver Springs Campground, campers enjoy "big and flat" sites with "lots of green area to play a game." Another reviewer noted, "The sites are nice and large. The main problem was very hard to level and soft grass."

Natural features: The landscape around Cleveland Heights offers unique camping settings. The West Woods provides a distinctive experience where "the site is a walk off of the trail, and situated slightly lower than trail level for privacy. Amazing sounds, smells, and relaxation."

Pet-friendly amenities: Several campgrounds accommodate pets with dedicated facilities. Silver Springs Campground impresses visitors with "THE best dog park I have ever seen in this area. So my dogs loved this campground more than me and that was worth it. It was dark enough to see a space station cross the sky at night."

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance planning, especially during peak season. For West Branch State Park, a camper advises to "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!"

Site topography: Prepare for uneven terrain at many campgrounds. At Punderson State Park Campground, "the sites greatly very on size and flatness so make sure you look at the pictures of the site before you book some are basically the parking pad and a fire ring, some are big and flat some are on a incline."

Limited facilities: Some smaller campgrounds offer minimal amenities. The West Woods features "2 sites in the park both of which are walk in only and not close together. They are relatively small, 2-4 person tent only... No bathroom (about a half mile of trail away), no water, no picnic table."

    Tips for camping with families

Select accessible campgrounds: Families should consider sites with amenities designed for children. Punderson State Park Campground provides "a nice playground and cute camp store. A good amount of secluded and shaded sites... Not for your serious adventures but great for families."

Consider entertainment options: Woodside Lake Park offers activities beyond just camping. "The swimming pond has inflatables and boat rentals. There's good fishing, and typically lots of activities." Another camper noted it's "close to Cuyahoago Valley National Park."

Look for educational opportunities: Several campgrounds provide learning experiences. At Cuyahoga Valley National Park, families can enjoy "hiking spree in the fall" with "excellent views and all athletic levels. Good climbs and level trails alike."

    Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: RV campers should come prepared for uneven sites. At West Branch State Park, one visitor reported, "our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches. The jack was down as low as it would go and we were still off by 1.5 inches."

Electrical service variations: Check power requirements before booking. Punderson State Park Campground provides limited electrical options as "very few full hookups. Rest of the sites only have 15-20 amp service. The lots are not even close the level."

Water quality issues: Some campgrounds have water quality concerns. As one experienced RVer reported, prepare for possible "iron& sulfur laden well water" at certain campgrounds, which might require additional filtration equipment.
