Catskill region camping sites near Red Hook, New York range from state parks to private facilities within a 30-45 minute drive. Most campgrounds sit at elevations between 1,000-2,000 feet, creating cooler nights even during summer months. Woodland Valley Campground features mountain creek sites where campers report the sound "is like nature singing a lullaby," providing natural white noise for sleeping.
What to do
Hiking near Slide Mountain: Woodland Valley Campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the eastern Catskills trails. "Large campsite, clean facilities, fire pit, friendly and knowledgeable staff. This is an excellent site if you're looking to explore the Slide Mountain Wilderness and a great place to prep if you're planning to go backpacking as well," notes Derek W.
Swimming in natural settings: North-South Lake Campground offers swimming areas popular with families. "I go there almost every year to go swimming with my family and friends and it's always a good time," shares Lizz H. The campground features a swimming area with a floating dock for jumping.
Visit nearby attractions: Mills Norrie State Park Campground provides access to several historical sites. "The park is in perfect proximity to the best attractions in the religion. Visit Lake Miniwaska, Dover Church Falls, Rheinbeck Aerodrome, New Paltz," recommends Michael G.
What campers like
Spacious, wooded sites: Kenneth L Wilson Campground receives praise for its site layout. "We LOVED our site (site 9). It was absolutely massive! The photo doesn't do it justice. It was set back very far from the main road and was an extremely large site," reports camper C R.
Waterfront options: Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds offers creek-side camping that visitors appreciate. "We were over in 'Lover's Lane' so it was isolated on a separate loop. Couples only on this loop, no kids! Pricey--$60 a night. But super nice being right on the creek--we took our chairs and plopped down in the water," explains Kyla B.
Clean facilities: Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground maintains well-kept amenities. "Quiet, clean enough and well worth the price. Showers are hot and there's great water pressure. The cleanliness of the bathrooms depends on how busy the campground is," notes Perrin M.
What you should know
Limited connectivity: Many campgrounds have minimal or no cell service. At Kenneth L Wilson Campground, visitors report "No cell service in the campground," making it ideal for a digital detox but requiring advance planning.
Seasonal considerations: Most facilities operate from May through October with varying opening dates. Interlake RV Park opens earlier than most, with a season running "April 15-Oct," making it a good option for early spring camping.
Reservation requirements: During peak season, campgrounds fill quickly. For North-South Lake Campground, one camper advises to "Reserve very early for waterfront" sites, as these premium locations book months in advance.
Bear awareness: Several campgrounds report bear activity. At Kenneth L Wilson, a camper shared their experience of getting "chased off by a bear," though they also noted "the bear was very nice for a bear."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds offers extensive facilities for children. "Amazing campground with perfectly spaced large sites. There's a few playgrounds a great pool and a lot of amenities can't wait to go back," shares Richard V.
Swimming options for various ages: Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground provides designated swimming areas. "Labor Day Weekend stay. A lot of people! Very nice beach but packed. Huge parties at the picnic area," notes Taylor P., suggesting weekday visits might be better for families seeking quieter experiences.
Activities beyond hiking: North-South Lake Campground offers diverse recreation. "I'm a native of the Catskills and spent many an afternoon with my family enjoying the facilities at North/South Lake. I've recently started going there again with my own family and it's great to see them take the same enjoyment I did. Camping, swimming, hiking, boating, biking, this place has it all," says Chris D.
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: Interlake RV Park provides complete services for RVs. "It took me a while to identify a campground that was convenient for exploring the Hyde Park area, in particular the FDR National Historic Site (20-30 minutes away) and the Walkway over the Hudson, but this campground also offers plenty to keep the whole family occupied," says Jean C.
Site leveling considerations: Mills Norrie State Park Campground requires careful site selection for RVs. "There are only a handful of sites with electric hookups and only one (site 51) is level. Some have a steep descent off the road, and there's a lip on the road that can scrape bottom of campers/RVs," warns Kathy L.
Site accessibility: Some campgrounds have limitations for larger rigs. Kenneth L Wilson Campground offers "Sites that are flat and packed dirt instead of gravel, which was great," according to Katherine P., making it easier to set up and level RVs without extensive blocking.
