Cabin campers enjoy varied options near Pleasant Valley, situated in Dutchess County at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. The area receives approximately 45 inches of precipitation annually, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months. Most cabin sites require reservations weeks in advance, particularly for weekend stays between May and October.
What to Do
Swimming and water activities: At Mills Norrie State Park Campground, campers have easy access to the Hudson River. "The camp sites were spacious enough to allow for two cars each and probably 3 tents each (saw this at one site). Rangers running the place were pleasant and informative," notes Rebecca Y.
Hiking with elevation: The mountainous terrain provides challenging trails with viewpoints. "The loop hike over the mountains was good, at times more intermediate than beginner and I wouldn't try to go it with younger kids," reports Marque D. at Macedonia Brook State Park Campground.
Rock climbing: The Shawangunk Mountains offer world-class climbing opportunities. "This is a very nice modern campground with great access to amazing hiking and climbing in the area! About half the sites are walk-in and half the sites are drive-up," explains Mollie R. from Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground.
What Campers Like
Natural water features: Streams and small waterways enhance many campsites. "We had a family camping trip with lots of kids of all ages, the walk in sites are not too far off the road so it was easily manageable," says Stacey R. about Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground.
Level tent platforms: Many campgrounds provide flat areas specifically for tents. "The nicest, most level tent site you'll ever find. So easy to set up, and no worries whatsoever about roots or rocks," shares Kelsey R. about Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground.
Local attractions: The region offers numerous day trip options. "Close to good hiking as well as a few wineries. Not a bad weekend! Perfect getaway from fast-paced city living," notes Jenny K. who visited Macedonia Brook State Park.
What You Should Know
Seasonal crowding: Weekends fill quickly during summer months. "This park has a nice open beach on Canopus Lake with a concession area and bathhouse, which we found to be quite clean! Weekends - this park is FULL! Make sure to reserve at least two weeks out. Weekdays? You should be in luck!" advises Shelly B. from Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground.
Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between parks. "Bathroom and water pressure was ok. But one shower location for 50 campsites. Three small shower units and three toilet," reports Fumi U. from Mills Norrie State Park.
Bear awareness: Black bears inhabit the region. "As we were walking back up to our tent there was a small bear within feet from us that we almost didn't see!" warns Catina C. who camped at Macedonia Brook State Park.
Tips for Camping with Families
Pet-friendly options: Several parks welcome dogs with specific guidelines. "99% of people don't even know this area exists. If you want a quiet piece of beautiful forest to truly rough it and go camping for a few days, then this is what you have been looking for," recommends Doc B. about Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park.
Swimming safety: Supervised swimming areas provide safer options for children. "The beach is closed after Labor Day to the public, but open to people staying at the campsite. Clean and beautiful," notes Courtney D. from Clarence Fahnestock State Park.
Kid-friendly activities: Structured recreation keeps children entertained. "This campground has a lot of activities and has kids of all ages galore. I was worried my 12 year old would be too old for it but he enjoyed making friends there," shares Stephanie H. from Jellystone Park™ Gardiner.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Research specific site dimensions before booking. "I stayed in site number 1, and I found it to be just wooded enough. Almost all of the sites offered privacy... Even when the campground was full," reports Shelly B. from Clarence Fahnestock State Park.
Hookup availability: Full-service sites are limited in some parks. "It is a bit more open and campsite can be a bit close to each other. But the place was very clean and friendly," notes Jenna S. about Jellystone Park Gardiner.
Seasonal variations: Campground amenities change throughout the year. "This is a beautiful site to camp out. The staffs are friendly and very attentive. I never stayed a state campsite where the sites are so close each other. If you like a 'normal' distance to your neighbors, I'd not recommend this place," advises Fumi U. about their October stay at Mills Norrie State Park.
