Oakfield's camping options stretch from Erie County to the west and Monroe County to the north, with elevation changes between 500-900 feet throughout the region. While summer temperatures typically range from 55-80°F, fall camping can see nighttime temperatures dipping below 45°F by mid-October. Campgrounds within the area remain operational during thunderstorm season from June through August, with temporary activity restrictions during electrical storms.
What to do
Disc golf adventures: Darien Lakes State Park offers a relatively new frisbee golf course set among natural surroundings. "This park is a nicely kept, clean and quiet gem. I live local to the area and still find a time to setup the tent and enjoy some peace and quiet away from the noise of daily life. There is a fairly new Frisbee golf course as well," notes Jeremy H. from Darien Lakes State Park Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds offer fishing access for various species. At Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground, campers can enjoy well-stocked waters. "Great campground, they have it all, a huge lake to swim in, a salt water pool, fitness center, well stocked store, small restaurant with finger foods," reports Frank N., highlighting the diverse amenities beyond just fishing.
Winter backpacking: For off-season adventurers, some parks offer winter camping opportunities. "We did some winter camping here. We backpacked into the lean to along the Conservation Trail. It was in good condition and we had a large clearing for activities. No issues with animals," shares Leah W. about her experience at Darien Lakes State Park Campground.
What campers like
Private sites with natural separation: Cherry Hill Campground offers spacious sites with natural boundaries. "The sites are very spacious, and with a number of wildlife feeders throughout, it was a great place to do a little bird watching/photography," mentions Sinclaire B., who appreciated the natural setting.
Convenient concert access: For music fans, Cherry Hill provides special transportation to nearby concerts. "We have stayed at Cherry Hill a couple times, mostly for Darien Lake concerts. It's VERY convenient to get to the convert as the campground offers shuttles before the events," explains Cory W., though he notes, "Getting back across the road to the campground can be challenging."
Year-round recreational options: Campgrounds like Southwoods RV Resort offer activities regardless of season. "Southwoods is a beautiful campground and accommodates campers of all ages. 2 well kept pools, playgrounds, laundry facilities, mini golf, soccer, basketball. The employees are so helpful and nice!" reports Hope C., highlighting the variety of options.
What you should know
Weather variations: Lake Ontario's proximity affects weather patterns at certain campgrounds. "We camped here for 4 days of rain, rain and more rain. I have camped in the rain before, but, because our site was wide open with NO trees, it quickly turned into a mud pit," warns Marlene H. about her experience at Lakeside State Park Campground.
Noise levels: Campgrounds near attractions may experience higher noise levels. "It's pretty clear the planner of this park has never camped outside a KOA in their life. The location had so much potential but the sites are too close together," Brad M. notes about Lakeside State Park, mentioning issues with "campers that feel the need to not only completely fill their site but also take up any common area."
Seasonal amenities: Many campgrounds operate with reduced services during shoulder seasons. "The camp store is open from 3-8 Monday-Thurs, so we had to travel around the area to find firewood," reports Katherine P. about weekday stays at Lakeside State Park, suggesting weekend visits for full services.
Tips for camping with families
Entertainment proximity: Six Flags Darien Lake Campground offers direct theme park access. "This is a large campground. Walking distance to the theme park. Campground fees include admission to the theme park. The sites are very nice and well maintained. There are campers for rent, cabins for rent, tent sites, RV sites and premium RV sites," explains Mary H.
Playground options: Multiple campgrounds feature playgrounds for different age groups. "Lei-ti is by far one of the cleanest campgrounds we have ever stayed at. It feels safe and is our home away from home," shares Kristine B., adding, "They have many activities like swimming, mini golf, a couple really nice playgrounds, fishing (the kids love getting sunnys and there are bass as well)."
Insect preparation: Bug activity varies throughout the camping season. "Cherry Hills campground lives up to its claim to bring you as close to nature as possible. The grounds are well manicured without looking unnatural," mentions Sinclaire B., though bringing insect repellent remains essential from June through September.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing considerations: For those with larger RVs, site selection matters significantly. "The campground itself is pretty and well kept. Some sites are a little tight, but most people aren't there to camp, they're going to the park or a concert, or both," notes Cory W. about Six Flags Darien Lake Campground.
Hookup availability: Full-service sites can be found at several locations. "We chose a back-in 50-amp full hook-up site (M28) at $42/night. All the utilities were placed appropriately so we didn't need any extensions. The water pressure and electric were good," shares Nancy W. about Southwoods RV Resort, noting the well-designed layout.
Late arrival options: For those arriving after office hours, some parks offer special check-in procedures. "We checked in well after the office closed (it's open until 9pm), but called ahead and it wasn't an issue at all," explains Danielle S. about her experience at Lakeside State Park, which offers flexibility for late arrivals.
