Best Campgrounds near Oakfield, NY

Western New York's Oakfield area features several established campgrounds within a 30-minute drive, with Darien Lakes State Park Campground standing as one of the most popular destinations. Located just 7 miles southwest in Darien Center, this state park offers a mix of tent sites, RV hookups, cabins, and yurts around a scenic lake. Six Flags Darien Lake Campground provides a unique experience with its proximity to the adjacent theme park, while Cherry Hill Campground offers a smaller, more intimate setting with just 10 sites. The camping season throughout the region typically runs from early May through mid-October, with most facilities closing for the winter months. Campers seeking full hookups for RVs will find options at Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground in nearby Akron and Southwoods RV Resort in Byron.

Advance reservations are strongly recommended for all campgrounds in the region, especially during summer weekends and holiday periods when facilities often reach capacity. Most state park campgrounds require bookings through the New York State Parks reservation system, while private campgrounds maintain their own reservation processes. The camping season is limited by Western New York's climate, with occasional late spring frost and early fall temperature drops affecting comfort levels. As one visitor to Darien Lakes State Park noted, "The shade definitely saved us because it was very hot outside! I would also recommend bringing bug spray, because the mosquitos ate me alive." Summer humidity can be significant, making waterfront sites particularly desirable. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, though some coverage gaps exist in more remote sections of state parks.

Lakefront campsites receive consistently high ratings from visitors, with water activities forming a central part of the camping experience. At Darien Lakes State Park, one camper reported, "The lake is awesome, and great for all water activities. I really enjoyed stand-up paddle boarding as well as fishing with my parents!" Most state park campgrounds provide clean, well-maintained facilities, though some visitors note that bathrooms and showers in certain parks could use updating. Family-friendly amenities are common, including playgrounds, hiking trails, and picnic areas. Site privacy varies considerably, with some campgrounds offering well-separated, wooded sites while others feature more open layouts with less seclusion. Weekday camping typically offers a quieter experience than weekends, when day visitors and fuller campgrounds create a more social atmosphere.

    Niagara County Camping Resort

    Niagra County Camping Resort

Arrived late at night to this established site. This is a mixed accommodation campground with established long term residents & short term sites.

Some sites include a table, power access and tire rim for fire-ring. Showers & flushing toilets are near RV sites in back area. Small camp store, swimming pond & fishing pond. Manager, Christine very nice & helpful.

Campground is relatively close to scenic drives along Lake Ontario & Niagra State Park, Niagra Falls.

    Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground

    Kid friendly but Bee Problem

We had a lot of fun here and there’s a lot of activities for kids I would typically give this campsite 5 stars but our only problem was there were bees everywhere. I get some bees are apart of the camping experience and nature but we’ve never ran into this problem elsewhere. They were all over the campground it was very unpleasant and there was a nest under the playground we did advise management of.

Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    Niagara Falls visit

We stayed here when seeing the falls easy 18 min drive to the falls. One perk we were not aware of was free parking at one of the three New Yark park parking lots with our campground pass. Showers clean and warm. Staff helpful and friendly.

    Hamlin Beach State Park Campground

    Relaxing 2 weeks

The camp store is closed along with no firewood and no laundry.

We stayed for 2 weeks and it was so relaxing. We loved biking through the loops and by the beach at the park. There was live music at the park during the week. The campground has an activity room full of things to do. As a state park, there are a lot of different people with different values, so be ready for the occasional obnoxious family. Our site was secluded and in the pines. We love it here and will definitely do this again!

    Woodstream Campsite

    Rip off

Have to stay at least 2 nights. Employees say one thing. Then boss charges me even though I was told it was okay. Aren't willing to reason with. Also traffic very loud at night

    Stay Bristol Woodlands

    Well maintained and friendly Staff!

Campground is adorable, you can see a lot of other campers, but the spots are spaced out. Showers were nice, didn’t get to try the pool out as it was a quick stopover, but this seems like a fun place to spend some time

    Niagara Woodland Campground

    Good for the price

Have to say enjoyed my stay, yes lots of year around campers with permanent spots, but lots of activities during my stay and didn’t bother me at all. Meet the owner very nice guy loan me his father tiedown steaks. Plenty of kids having fun by the pool. So I didn’t have to entertain my boys. It’s a well seasoned campground. So on the older side. But didn’t stop us from having a good trip overall

Guide to Oakfield

Oakfield's camping options stretch from Erie County to the west and Monroe County to the north, with elevation changes between 500-900 feet throughout the region. While summer temperatures typically range from 55-80°F, fall camping can see nighttime temperatures dipping below 45°F by mid-October. Campgrounds within the area remain operational during thunderstorm season from June through August, with temporary activity restrictions during electrical storms.

What to do

Disc golf adventures: Darien Lakes State Park offers a relatively new frisbee golf course set among natural surroundings. "This park is a nicely kept, clean and quiet gem. I live local to the area and still find a time to setup the tent and enjoy some peace and quiet away from the noise of daily life. There is a fairly new Frisbee golf course as well," notes Jeremy H. from Darien Lakes State Park Campground.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds offer fishing access for various species. At Sleepy Hollow Lake Campground, campers can enjoy well-stocked waters. "Great campground, they have it all, a huge lake to swim in, a salt water pool, fitness center, well stocked store, small restaurant with finger foods," reports Frank N., highlighting the diverse amenities beyond just fishing.

Winter backpacking: For off-season adventurers, some parks offer winter camping opportunities. "We did some winter camping here. We backpacked into the lean to along the Conservation Trail. It was in good condition and we had a large clearing for activities. No issues with animals," shares Leah W. about her experience at Darien Lakes State Park Campground.

What campers like

Private sites with natural separation: Cherry Hill Campground offers spacious sites with natural boundaries. "The sites are very spacious, and with a number of wildlife feeders throughout, it was a great place to do a little bird watching/photography," mentions Sinclaire B., who appreciated the natural setting.

Convenient concert access: For music fans, Cherry Hill provides special transportation to nearby concerts. "We have stayed at Cherry Hill a couple times, mostly for Darien Lake concerts. It's VERY convenient to get to the convert as the campground offers shuttles before the events," explains Cory W., though he notes, "Getting back across the road to the campground can be challenging."

Year-round recreational options: Campgrounds like Southwoods RV Resort offer activities regardless of season. "Southwoods is a beautiful campground and accommodates campers of all ages. 2 well kept pools, playgrounds, laundry facilities, mini golf, soccer, basketball. The employees are so helpful and nice!" reports Hope C., highlighting the variety of options.

What you should know

Weather variations: Lake Ontario's proximity affects weather patterns at certain campgrounds. "We camped here for 4 days of rain, rain and more rain. I have camped in the rain before, but, because our site was wide open with NO trees, it quickly turned into a mud pit," warns Marlene H. about her experience at Lakeside State Park Campground.

Noise levels: Campgrounds near attractions may experience higher noise levels. "It's pretty clear the planner of this park has never camped outside a KOA in their life. The location had so much potential but the sites are too close together," Brad M. notes about Lakeside State Park, mentioning issues with "campers that feel the need to not only completely fill their site but also take up any common area."

Seasonal amenities: Many campgrounds operate with reduced services during shoulder seasons. "The camp store is open from 3-8 Monday-Thurs, so we had to travel around the area to find firewood," reports Katherine P. about weekday stays at Lakeside State Park, suggesting weekend visits for full services.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment proximity: Six Flags Darien Lake Campground offers direct theme park access. "This is a large campground. Walking distance to the theme park. Campground fees include admission to the theme park. The sites are very nice and well maintained. There are campers for rent, cabins for rent, tent sites, RV sites and premium RV sites," explains Mary H.

Playground options: Multiple campgrounds feature playgrounds for different age groups. "Lei-ti is by far one of the cleanest campgrounds we have ever stayed at. It feels safe and is our home away from home," shares Kristine B., adding, "They have many activities like swimming, mini golf, a couple really nice playgrounds, fishing (the kids love getting sunnys and there are bass as well)."

Insect preparation: Bug activity varies throughout the camping season. "Cherry Hills campground lives up to its claim to bring you as close to nature as possible. The grounds are well manicured without looking unnatural," mentions Sinclaire B., though bringing insect repellent remains essential from June through September.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: For those with larger RVs, site selection matters significantly. "The campground itself is pretty and well kept. Some sites are a little tight, but most people aren't there to camp, they're going to the park or a concert, or both," notes Cory W. about Six Flags Darien Lake Campground.

Hookup availability: Full-service sites can be found at several locations. "We chose a back-in 50-amp full hook-up site (M28) at $42/night. All the utilities were placed appropriately so we didn't need any extensions. The water pressure and electric were good," shares Nancy W. about Southwoods RV Resort, noting the well-designed layout.

Late arrival options: For those arriving after office hours, some parks offer special check-in procedures. "We checked in well after the office closed (it's open until 9pm), but called ahead and it wasn't an issue at all," explains Danielle S. about her experience at Lakeside State Park, which offers flexibility for late arrivals.
