What to do
Hiking at Bash Bish Falls: Access this impressive waterfall via trails from Taconic State Park, which connects New York to Massachusetts. "There are plenty of hiking trails nearby and of course, trails to Bash Bish Falls which is beautiful. It was low the first time we visited and we were able to make it to the top of the falls to go swimming and the views were incredible," notes Jackie G.
Swimming in mountain lakes: Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground offers excellent swimming options with lifeguards present during summer months. "The lake is beautiful and clean. Expect to pay $15 fee (I think) to use your paddleboards/kyacks etc. Worth every penny," reports Mellisa T. The park maintains separate swimming areas for different skill levels.
Wildlife watching: Early mornings at Kenneth L Wilson Campground provide opportunities to spot local wildlife. "Got chased off by a bear. It was the wildest weekend I ever had, I'm not being sarcastic. The hiking areas are great, the weather is perfect and the bear was very nice for a bear," shares Kane B., describing an uncommon but memorable wildlife encounter.
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds offers secluded camping spots with natural barriers between sites. "Rip Van Winkle is a beautiful campground, it's well run, well maintained, and has a lot to do! I was a little skeptical that we wouldn't get to choose our site, but you can't go wrong, they are all wooded, private and well situated," explains Kathy G.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently note the maintenance standards at campgrounds in this region. "The bathrooms were fine. They were clean but sometimes ran out of toilet paper. The campground does not sell wood, but rangers will direct you to a gas station close by where you can buy some," reports a visitor to Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground.
Water recreation: Multiple ponds and lakes provide cooling recreation during summer months. "Been there couple of times. Love it. Two lakes. Highly recommended," says Luka M. about North-South Lake Campground. This campground's swimming areas include docks for jumping and designated shallow zones.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Many campgrounds in the Catskill region have minimal or no cellular coverage. "There is NO cell service here. You have to drive about 5 minutes towards Hunter to get service," warns Sam L. about Devil's Tombstone Campground.
Seasonal considerations: Campgrounds can be significantly busier on summer weekends and holidays. "Avoid holidays to avoid the crowds," advises Tara L. about North-South Lake Campground, which can reach capacity during peak periods.
Dog documentation requirements: New York State parks enforce strict pet documentation rules. "If you are traveling with a dog, be sure to bring proof of rabies— they ask," mentions Erin B. about Copake Falls Area — Taconic State Park. Rabies certificates must be current and physical copies are required.
Tips for camping with families
Look for dedicated family loops: Some campgrounds offer sections specifically designed for families with children. "Large family friendly campground with all the amenities - boating, showers, great hiking," says Becky G. about North-South Lake Campground.
Playground access: Multiple facilities have play structures for children. "This campground had a nice pool and used to be a KOA now it is privately owned but I believe it is still just as nice. They have live music and it's gated so only campers and visitors can get into the gates which is nice security wise," notes Amanda S. about one nearby facility.
Tent platform advantages: Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground offers raised wooden platforms at some sites, which families often prefer. "This was our second time coming to this campground and our second time getting dumped on by the rain, but have no fear!! The platforms kept us off the ground and were helpful in setting up appropriate tarp protection!" explains Rosie R.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for larger rigs: Blue Mountain Reservation accommodates larger RVs with properly sized sites. "We had a great time with a playground and pool basketball court. Full hookup availability: Several dog friendly campgrounds near Germantown offer complete RV services. "Very easy to level and setup on #7. Full connections. Pay showers and laundry onsite. Loved having gated security," notes C O. about Rip Van Winkle Campground, highlighting the convenience of having water, electric and sewer connections at the site.
Dump station access: For those staying at parks without sewer hookups, many campgrounds provide dump stations. "The campsite was secluded and quiet.
