What to do
Explore elevated trails: Suffern-Bear Mountain from Gate Hill Road offers primitive camping with challenging terrain. "At one point of the trail is a very difficult, but doable, rock scramble up the side of the mountain. At the top of the scramble is a primitive camping site with amazing views," notes one reviewer who recommends packing light for the 2.5-mile hike to the campsite.
Visit historic sites: Ward Pound Ridge Reservation provides access to Revolutionary War-era trails. "Here you can find some of the Appalachian Trail, with various smaller trail heads for this historic (Revolutionary Times 1770s) part of the region including the one to Doodle Town," states a camper who enjoyed exploring the ruins where "most of the area has been taken back by nature leaving only a stone stair case here or a partial foundation wall there."
Winter camping: Several campgrounds remain open year-round, including Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. A regular visitor notes, "They have great sights and are open all year round. I've stayed in hammocks, tents, lean-tos, and even did a good share of car camping."
What campers like
Platform camping: Beaver Pond Campground offers elevated tent platforms. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained," explains one camper who appreciated the thoughtful design.
Off-season solitude: Midweek and off-season camping provides a different experience. A visitor to Beaver Pond noted, "Ranger said that during summer weekends the grounds fill up and can be quite noisy, but mid-week during the off-season it was great."
Diverse site options: Camp Glen Gray in neighboring New Jersey offers various accommodation styles. "Many camp sites open to rent. Cabins - Leanto - Tent Sites," explains a visitor who also mentioned the camp "provides trucking of gear weather permitting. No vehicles allowed to drive through camp."
What you should know
Reservation logistics: Some campgrounds have specific booking procedures. Ward Pound Ridge requires in-person reservations: "The one downside is that you need to book in person but it can be done well in advance if need be."
Rustic cabin standards: Sebago Cabin Camp offers basic accommodations. "These cabins are VERY rustic, four walls, a cot, and a fridge. You still feel like you are 'roughing it' but with the convenience of a fridge," explains a visitor who noted the "absolute zero phone service (for T-Mobile) which was AMAZING."
