Best Campgrounds near Arden, NY

The Harriman State Park area northeast of Arden, New York encompasses several developed campgrounds offering diverse camping experiences. Beaver Pond Campground serves as a central camping hub within the park system, providing tent platforms, RV hookups, and standard tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings. Nearby, the Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center and Sebago Cabin Camp expand accommodation options with cabin facilities. The region also includes primitive backcountry camping areas along trails such as the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail from Gate Hill Road.

Seasonal considerations play a significant role in the camping experience, with most developed campgrounds operating from April through October. Harriman State Park campgrounds feature varying levels of amenities - some offer electric hookups, showers, and water access while primitive areas require self-sufficiency with no facilities. Weekends and holidays see significantly higher visitation, especially during summer months. As one camper noted, "This is my 'home' campsite and the one I return to most frequently because of the convenience of location. I DO NOT recommend going on holiday weekends or peak summer seasons. It will be noisy, there will be generators, there will be loud music."

Several visitors highlight the contrast between peak and off-peak camping experiences in the area. Campgrounds within an hour's drive of New York City tend to fill quickly during summer weekends, with midweek and off-season periods offering much quieter experiences. Many sites feature raised wooden platforms for tent placement, providing flat surfaces in the otherwise rocky terrain. The region's network of trails connects many camping areas, making it popular for both overnight stays and multi-day backpacking trips. Campers frequently mention the surprisingly dark night skies despite proximity to urban areas. One visitor remarked, "The view from the beach in the evening is breathtaking. I have never seen so many stars," highlighting the natural beauty accessible within this relatively close distance to New York City.

    Skyline RV Camp - Waterfront

    Waterfront Skyline Views, Clean Bathrooms

A little intimidating driving in to a nondescript gate at the end of a narrow street but the overall experience exceeded expectation. It’s essentially a spacious parking lot with electrical pedestals but the view of the skyline across the water is spectacular and there’s a metro station within a 10-minute walk. The area feels safe and is pedestrian friendly, even at night (we were there Halloween night and we took our kids out trick-or-treating just outside the gate). During the day, I saw another RV patron walking to do their laundry just outside the complex on the next street over (I didn’t ask where exactly). On-site bathrooms were warm and clean. There were portable showers available but beware the broken shower head holders and lack of shelving/hooks for towels & clothing. This was a minor issue considering the convenience of RV accommodations so easily accessible within the NYC region, would definitely recommend. I couldn’t find a map prior to my booking but would suggest requesting the highest number site available for best direct views.

Gunx Camping on a Horse Farm

No Amenities but Great Location for the Gunks

This campground is just mowed spots on a hillside in Kerhonkson. There are no facilities aside from some port-o-sans that the owners didn't recommend using. But the location is great for accessing the Shawamhunks. Given the lack of affordable RV campgrounds (and even the few expensive ones) in the area, this stands out.

Ten Mile River Shelter — Appalachian National Scenic Trail

    Not a public campground!

Ten Mile River Shelter and campsite is not a public campground. Sure, anyone can camp there, but it is designated for folks hiking the A.T., whether thru-hikers, section hikers, or whatever. While there are no rules about who can camp there, during thru-hiking season, consideration should be made for folks who rely on places like this during a long distance hike. It is at least a mile if not a mile and a half from approved parking (on the side of the road off the A.T.) to camp, either from the A.T. or a combo of the A.T. and a blue blaze trail (which is easier, imo). There are also no fires allowed on the CT A.T.

    Osa Trail

    Gorgeous Views

Had a great time here with my wife and 2 little kids and our dog.  One of the most beautiful sunrises we've ever seen!  Very secluded, though Alex is right down the driveway so didn't feel like the middle of nowhere.

    Tri-State RV Park

    Friendly Owners and Reasonable rates

We just stayed the night last minute. We hit unexpected traffic on the way and the owners were kind enough to wait for us to check in. The sites aren’t anything glamorous but the hookups are great and easy to pull through. It is by the highway so it can be loud at times but I don’t mind. Beautiful river on the property. Bathroom and showers were clean and well stocked.

    Mills Norrie State Park Campground

    Great staff but back-to-back campsite

We stayed a coupe of days in Oct. This is a beautiful site to camp out. The staffs are friendly and very attentive.
Bathroom and water pressure was ok. But one shower location for 50 campsites. Three small showers units and three toilet.
I never stayed a state campsite where the sites are so close each other. If you like a “normal” distance to your neighbors, I'd not recommend this place.

    New York City North-Newburgh KOA

    Good amenities and fun experience!

Campsites Great campsites, wooded and cozy, though a little tight for longer rigs as our neighbors found out when they ran over a wooden post backing in. But spaced apart nicely with lots of vegetation between. Nice and level. Amenities Bathrooms are older and need of some repair but let me tell you I was very happy to see a normal shower head with real hot water! So no complaints here. Laundry facilities were clean and open 24/7 with reasonable prices 2.50/2.00 washer/dryer. And the dryers actually worked. Small dog park, communal spaces, and a camp store all made the place feel like a little village. They even have a wine store- cab sav was good. WiFi I work remotely and WiFi is always an issue. We have Starlink but in a wooded campsite, connecting is an issue but luckily their WiFi was great. Had no issues and could stream just fine. Halloween! We visited mid October and folks had sites decorated and the KOA has trick or treating and other activities every weekend in Oct. we were SO bummed to be leaving on a Friday and miss the festivities because it looked really fun. Would definitely go back. Also, staff was super nice.

    Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park

    Convenient pit stop

This spot is easy to find and access, and had decent ATT service. There's only a few spots, and the road is narrow with not much turnaround room, I wouldn't recommend for trailers or RVs.

Dingmans Campground — Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

    Beautiful, wooded, campsites

I’m stopping through for the night and so grateful that I did. This campground is lovely. The spots are wooded so you have a bit of privacy. And you are so close to activities throughout the park. I’m changing my schedule to enjoy the campground and park a bit tomorrow.

Platform tent sites receive particular praise for their solid foundation and relative seclusion. Trails throughout Harriman State Park connect many camping areas, allowing hikers to access viewpoints overlooking the Hudson River Valley. Campers consistently mention the surprisingly remote feel despite proximity to New York City, with one visitor remarking, "Only 45 minutes from sleepy hollow and Tarrytown.
